Just curious: as transformation leaders, is there sometimes a feeling of "career risk?" If so, in what way?
Jonathan Fletcher
god yes. DevOps radically changes traditional IT. Big change = big risk but also Big change = big opportunity
Catapult PR
important question!
Chris Jackson
I don't feel it so much, either a successful or failed DevOps transformation is a valuable asset for your next potential employer
Ben Grinnell
Yes, if your not on the same page as your CEO, get some help or a new CEO ;-)
John Furrier
I would really be interested in see the persona of a "transformational leader" who are these people & is there a list of leaders to talk to.
margo cronin
.@RealGeneKim yes there is unfortunately a culture of "no one gets fired for choosing [old way]".
John Furrier
What is the background of the "ideal" transformation leader - or is it industry by industry?
Gene Kim
.@furrier Trick question? :) We're assembling a remarkable group of transformational leaders at #DOES16! Here they are!
Carmen DeArdo
I believe an aspect of effective Transformational Leadership is to be able to take on risk and build a firewall for your team and allow them to take credit. This can you at risk from a career development perspective.
John Furrier
exactly why I asked bc I think it would be great to highlight them and understand what the skill set or make up of these awesome people are
#DOES19 London
And what advice would you have to the younger generation interested in starting a career in DevOps?
John Furrier
believe it or not I get asked all the time this question: "who should i put in charge or promote or give the tasks too"
Damon Edwards
Failing at running the status quo can be blamed on others. Failing at transformation might stick to you.
Jonathan Smart
it definitely requires resilience. I've been pleasent
Gene Kim
.@furrier Friend is doing Ph.D. on "transformational leadership", which apparently descended from "servant leadership"
Carmen DeArdo
Taking risk and allowing others to take credit aids in the transformational success. Servant leadership is a critical aspect of this.
Pat Reed
Expect it - and actively engage resistors
Jonathan Smart
... Its been great how the organisation has embraced change, given 325 years of history
Gene Kim
.@furrier If u're interested, I can connect u with Stephen Mayner, who is studying this. He's studying @carmendeardo too!
#DOES19 London
What challenges still remain as part of implementing #DevOps in your organization? How are you addressing them?
John Furrier
Training and culture are tops of mind of #CxO
Carmen DeArdo
Culture definitely. Aspects of this include trust but also variance in how areas do the same types of work.
Jonathan Fletcher
cultural change is ongoing and never "done"
Chris Jackson
Governance and Finance! It drives hoe everything must work in an enterprise and is hardest to challenge.
Gene Kim
.@chriswiggy Any specifics on governance and finance obstacles?
margo cronin
The split of teams (ADM and ops). The implementation of tools in isolation. Incorrect engagement of 3rd party suppliers
Sarah Chong
mostly the mindset of "how" can I change and adopt, what does this mean for me? #Culture
Sometimes it needs more of a stick approach than the DevOps carrots - they come later!
Scott Potter
Supporting Cultural Change and resilience by increasing Personal Agility. This will part of what I will be talking about.
Chris Jackson
@RealGeneKim where to start... how you get funds, how you spend funds, how you manage assets, how and where you hire staff, what compliance controls you are exposed to
Jonathan Smart
again, culture. New ways of working, holistically across the enterprise
Gene Kim
.@chriswiggy Oh, just that? :) Haha. Holy cow. Might be easier to ask what doesn't involve Governance/Finance!
Chris Jackson
@RealGeneKim its about how you build to carry that burden without making it my team's problem... I am governance abstraction!
Ben Grinnell
being brave enough to fully open the customer feedback channel, e.g. public feedback that its easy for others to pile on or disagree with so you can see what's most important
Carmen DeArdo
@RealGeneKim We are continuing to work through the issues you have already noted around Audit, Security and Separation of Duties. The work you are doing with IT Revolution will certainly help us deal with these items.
Pat Reed
Imagine engaging audit as a partner once you've helped them understand the transparency and benefits of DevOps
#DOES19 London
How is culture being tapped within your organization and how does it affect your #DevOps initiatives?
Jonathan Fletcher
started top/down moving slowly towards ground floor movement. Would like more bottom/up
Chris Jackson
so many false dawns. Its not that people don't want to change, they just stop believing it can happen #momentum
margo cronin
.@DOESsummitEU frequently culture is not a KPI. Unless its a KPI, behaviour change cannot come about. But its hard to measure. Especially if the DevOps team isolated in a "Scrum Room"
Carmen DeArdo
We include Organization Change as part of our overall initiative. Once we can prove that something works for a given area, then it moves from being a hypothetical discussion into how to implement it more broadly.
Jonathan Smart
Champions self select into Communities of Practice. Voluntary. Then share, story tell. Weekly TEDX style talks, comms, newsletter, internal conferences, recognise the desired behaviour
Chris Jackson
@jonsmart we're trying to get that conference style thinking rooted at the moment, part of a drive to apply open source community management approach internally
Jonathan Fletcher
@jonsmart Nice. We have a monthly doughnut and learn. Come and hear about what people are up to with the bribery of Krispy Kremes
margo cronin
one positive change I have noticed is less talk about the "business" and "IT". Its more "us". This has been v positive in our org.
Carmen DeArdo
We have a core "DevOps" COP which cuts across all business areas and functional silos (that still exist) to provide a powerful source of collaboration and promote "horizontal" thinking across the value stream.
Sarah Chong
Find the keen ones and tell them to make more friends. Generally word of mouth, a few powerful product owners and pockets of expertise spreading the word
Toby Marsden
We aligned our goals to focus on the business outcome and it created a culture of responsibility across project teams that led to wider adoption of DevOps practices
Jonathan Fletcher
@margocronin we all work for the same company. I just happen to do a technical job
Jonathan Smart
communicate three more times than you think you need to and you're a third done
Jonathan Fletcher
@jonsmart ha totally. I often think the message has gone through and end up having the same conversation a dozen more time ;)
Gene Kim
.@carmendeardo What does "COP" stand for? Sounds fantastic!
Carmen DeArdo
@RealGeneKim Community of Practice - we have a SharePoint site and internal yammer and we are very transparent and include open invites to all our activities related to DevOps initiatives. That also helps change the culture. It's open to everyone.
