Compliance regulations require most enterprises to store their backups for at least 1 year, going all the way to 7 years or 15 years in some cases. However, a snapshot based data protection solution does not allow enterprises to do that.

We have eliminated this pain for the customer by providing a data protection service that does not penalize customers for retaining their backups for as long as required by the compliance regulations.

The regulatory and compliance problem is not specific to EBS but for everything that enters the Clumio platform. All data that is ingested in Clumio (VMWare or AWS) goes through the same security/compliance process.

With no central index and library for these Snapshots, verifying compliance and retention is very difficult for customers to self-automate and manage. Clumio keeps that centralized and tag based for easy reporting.

it's hard. The high cost of the snapshot approaches forces the admins to limit the # of copies (retention). Compliance needs order of magnitude more copies for longer durations. A solution that avoids the snapshot limitations is fundamentally better fit for compliances.

Agree! It seems like there has been less awareness and emphasis on getting ready for #CCPA as compared to #GDPR a few years ago. Enterprises are going to need to move fast to be ready.

We find a lot of customers are leaving themselves exposed to ransomware or rogue administrators or runaway scripts when they leverage snapshots as their data protection solution for backing up their public cloud workloads.

That's the risk current cloud architects face. Ransomware is difficult to solve without a solution like Clumio. Clumio will copy data outside your cloud account with a guaranteed immutable retention!

having a single cloud account for both primary and secondary data opens it up for ransomware proliferation. Once in, it can start attacking/encrypting data and snapshots accessible under the same account and the same-account backup strategy is not backing you up anymore

Workloads running in the public cloud are elastic thus the backup solution must be equally elastic. It is not only about scalability but also how fast can you scale up/down (agility). If the backup solution does not scale with the primary it ends up being the bottleneck.

technical debt - investment in decades long processes

Most often customers are making compromises (SnapManagers) on the way that they are protecting data being put into cloud in an attempt to have some level of protection. Compromise is never a good thing when it comes to your enterprise applications adding more risk.

One key challenge shaping backup strategy for cloud workloads is making sure to backup the data plus the metadata plus the machine learning models upon which so many cloud apps depend.

Good point @dvellante. No one wants to spend the money and effort to rebuild the complexity of on-prem backup in the public #cloud. Building in the public cloud with no technical debt is a huge advantage and Clumio customers reap the benefits.

Yes! Compliance is a key element of our SaaS services. We have completed ISO and will be complete on PCI and HIPAA by year end. Other services in progress are GDPR/CCPA and FEDRAMP scheduled for next year.

To tackle the Security aspects, we made sure from day one that the customer's backup data never leaves their environment in an unencrypted fashion. Further, customers can also bring their own encryption keys to control the lifecycle of the backup data.
