#ThirdWaveNext Wave Data ManagementLearn how to gain visibility, insight & control over data by automating workflows in a closed loop.
Joe E. Data
How do we think the cloud is going to play a role in traditional #datamanagement #reinvent
Storage Alchemist
clients will leverage the could for data repositories for different use cases
Dave Vellante
clients will leverage the cloud as data repositories for different use cases #reinvent
Noemi Greyzdorf
it depends on how you define cloud. Many of our clients are deploying private infrastructure and providing services internally
ttessks
Cloud for data will be like electricity. If it is easy, affordable and secure, everyone will want to store their data there. Technology today is just beginning #datamanagement #reinvent
Ira Goodman
The issue with using cloud for your data is that you don't need to have all of that storage physically onsite. As long as you have visibility with good tools. #thirdwave
Dave Vellante
@noemigreyzdorf Jassy just quoted @craw at #reinvent as saying self-built private clouds are dead
Noemi Greyzdorf
@ttessks don't forget about the reality of physics. data is not storage. Data is part of IP and how many differentiate. Storage is infrastructure. Storage services can be a utility but have to have tiers of service
Dave Vellante
Holy Crap! Jassy at #reinvent taking aim at Oracle - talking about "old world RDBMS...expensive, proprietary and lock-in" and can't move to the cloud the way they want - here we go!
Dave Vellante
Jassy at #reinvent announcing Amazon Aurora - a new dawn in DB - ha! is this cause Oracle won't play nice in the AWS marketplace?
Dave Vellante
Oracle and AWS are on a collision course- #reinvent - AWS competing on function and scale, Oracle on deeper function and full red stack - let the games begin!
Storage Alchemist
new cloud database at 1/10th the cost of commercial databases - i bet we now see a change in oracle licensing #reinvent2014
Storage Alchemist
now that we have even more data now going into the cloud - who has visibility?
Storage Alchemist
how do we know what database data to get into the cloud? - what makes sense?
Noemi Greyzdorf
@skenniston I don't know if we will see licensing changes, I think what the traditional db do and what cloud ones do are not, yet, the same. the utilities etc....can't compare unless you are doing analytics
Dave Vellante
AWS calling "mainframe databases super complicated and super expensive" - they're also super entrenched and super reliable #reinvent
Ira Goodman
This may be true, however, so many companies are enthralled with the notion of cloud; yet without having a catalog (some type of organized data), they still won't know details of what is in the cloud. #thirdwave
Storage Alchemist
@CrowdCaptain dude, why you stealing my audience ???? -
Dave Vellante
#reinvent? On stage at #NTAPInsight, #NTAP CEO Tom Georgens said “a true software defined platform=1 set of tools, 1 set of processes and 1 catalog” can this be applied to the cloud?
Joe E. Data
this is a good point and a good reason for Cloud ONTAP to help drive that consistency - I think that is what TG was driving at -
Storage Alchemist
the question is, does #NTAP have the catalog that does that level of data management?
Ira Goodman
having 1 catalog is key!
Noemi Greyzdorf
Ideally you want one service catalog, but the way technology stands right now, especially in storage, there is not enough standards to make it work
Storage Alchemist
@noemigreyzdorf, what standard should exist? the base filesystem / object based system - shouldn't we just understand the meta data
Joe E. Data
#MLB has 17PB of raw data? - wonder who they use...
Crowd Captain
Joe Inzerillo at MLB is right on the money AWS rocks
Ira Goodman
Is this data in the cloud? Hybrid? Private?
Prashant J
#MLB has tonnes of NetApp gear on premises
Dave Vellante
@p_jagannathan what details can you share re: the netapp infrastructure - people are interested in the netapp strategy w/ AWS #reinvent
Dave Vellante
"Baseball is like cricket but faster" says the guy from MLB - #reinvent - that's funny!
Storage Alchemist
then why do I use MLB to fall asleep?
Steven Beedle
Because your cable TV doesn't offer the Cricket Channel? ;-)
Prashant J
I dont agree with that comment, both are equally slow :)
Steven Beedle
Besbol has been very, very good to me . . . for sleeping. ;-)
Dave Vellante
@skenniston what's the cloud play without moving the data? Can u pls explain? #reinvent
Storage Alchemist
w/ #NTAP Cloud ONTAP, you can now snapmirror and snapvault data into the cloud. #CatalogicSW EXC can see the data locally and help to decide what data goes into Cloud ONTAP -
Tom Grave
Yes, getting the data there remains an age old challenge... with all this momentum behind #cloud adoption this too will be solved soon
Storage Alchemist
@tgrave50 good point - do you think having like/like - local / cloud is a good way to go w/ similar tools for support
Dave Vellante
Here's @dfloyer economic model on the impact of catalog sw - this was on-premises I believe but we have some cloud analysis too #reinvent http://wikibon.org/w...

Dave Vellante
Here's the full research note: http://wikibon.org/w...
Storage Alchemist
wish floyer was on this chat! the research has a lot of merit - I'd love to here his perspective around the true value of a catalog - more and more clients are talking about it
Frank Weitz
very interesting chart
ttessks
It is almost like an inventory of your data from which you can make decisions. No business would not do inventory on the physical. Yet, data is more critical to the business today thus the need for a catalog
Noemi Greyzdorf
Did you know that most cloud services don't have data protection inherently built in to the service? If you buy IaaS or PaaS, you still have to figure out how to protect and manage it.
Storage Alchemist
very true - question is, does data protection morph w/ the cloud? - do we still do standard protection to the cloud? do we protect what is in the cloud?
Ira Goodman
Sounds like an important opportunity. What good is having your data in the cloud if it is unprotected?
Dave Vellante
@noemigreyzdorf The cloud is mostly a dumb target in a data protection context right? #reinvent
Noemi Greyzdorf
@dvellante cloud is infrastructure. If you put a storage box in the cloud vs on prem, is it more intelligent? No.
Noemi Greyzdorf
@skenniston we have to protect data, not infrastructure.
Storage Alchemist
#reinvent2014 go see #NTAP Cloud ONTAP and @CatalogicSW ECX and how ECX can manage data local, remote and in the cloud - see it at #testdrive https://www.youtube....
Ed Walsh, Catalogic CEO on theCUBE
Listen to Ed Walsh talk about the 'blue ocean' for the evolution of data management with copy data management.
Tom Grave
Aurora...not a surprising announcement but this could be really big. 5X performance improvement... looking fwd to the proof points!
Dave Vellante
agreed - not surprising at all given the fact that orcl & IBM are going head to head w/ AWS #reinvent
