it depends on how you define cloud. Many of our clients are deploying private infrastructure and providing services internally

Cloud for data will be like electricity. If it is easy, affordable and secure, everyone will want to store their data there. Technology today is just beginning #datamanagement #reinvent

The issue with using cloud for your data is that you don't need to have all of that storage physically onsite. As long as you have visibility with good tools. #thirdwave

@ttessks don't forget about the reality of physics. data is not storage. Data is part of IP and how many differentiate. Storage is infrastructure. Storage services can be a utility but have to have tiers of service

@skenniston I don't know if we will see licensing changes, I think what the traditional db do and what cloud ones do are not, yet, the same. the utilities etc....can't compare unless you are doing analytics

This may be true, however, so many companies are enthralled with the notion of cloud; yet without having a catalog (some type of organized data), they still won't know details of what is in the cloud. #thirdwave

this is a good point and a good reason for Cloud ONTAP to help drive that consistency - I think that is what TG was driving at -

the question is, does #NTAP have the catalog that does that level of data management?

having 1 catalog is key!

Ideally you want one service catalog, but the way technology stands right now, especially in storage, there is not enough standards to make it work

@noemigreyzdorf, what standard should exist? the base filesystem / object based system - shouldn't we just understand the meta data

Yes, getting the data there remains an age old challenge... with all this momentum behind #cloud adoption this too will be solved soon

@tgrave50 good point - do you think having like/like - local / cloud is a good way to go w/ similar tools for support

It is almost like an inventory of your data from which you can make decisions. No business would not do inventory on the physical. Yet, data is more critical to the business today thus the need for a catalog

very true - question is, does data protection morph w/ the cloud? - do we still do standard protection to the cloud? do we protect what is in the cloud?

Sounds like an important opportunity. What good is having your data in the cloud if it is unprotected?

@dvellante cloud is infrastructure. If you put a storage box in the cloud vs on prem, is it more intelligent? No.
