DevOps & Agile Development '19
JOIN US: This is a chat-based conversation with DevOps experts Kate Catlin of CircleCI and Principal Engineer Karthik Gaekwad of Oracle about the state of rapid development here in 2019. It's a format change from previous #eWEEKchats, but we're going to give it a go!

#eweekchatHow Will We Store All OurData?JOIN US: This is a chat-based conversation about how we realistically are going to be storing our business and personal data in places where it will be safe and accessible for years to come. Can the cloud handle all of this? Doubtful.

#eweekchatPromise, Potential of the EdgeJOIN US: This is a chat-based conversation about how IT is rapidly evolving into a new phase that may turn out to be as important as, if not more important than, the cloud itself.

In your responses to Q2, you talk about the importance of collaboration. What are some good tools to assist with collaboration across teams in Jira, perhaps GitHub and others?
Karthik Gaekwad
Try to make the work visible across your teams and organizations. You can do this with Jira dashboards (make em public), or plugins with JIRA.
Karthik Gaekwad
I'm actually not sure on the github side of things. Sometimes it can be overwhelming. I used to be a big fan of waffleio for github, but not sure that's still a thing...
Chris Preimesberger
Q4: How does continuous integration benefit teams who've adopted an agile philosophy?
Karthik Gaekwad
In my experience, most organizations today already use CI; in talking with Oracle customers and folks at conferences, I seldom find folks who aren't using CI...
Karthik Gaekwad
The state of devops report in 2018 by @nicolefv specifically talked about how organizations that use CI in their workflow are more successful that teams that do not..
Karthik Gaekwad
In general, CI takes away the toil of actually building, testing, and deploying artifacts to your repositories. It's work that used to be manual before, but we all have too many things going on today to keep working on manual tasks that can be automated :)
Chris Preimesberger
Q2: What should you think about when you are evaluating different tools for your dev team? (just for Kate and Karthik)
Kate Catlin
There are many factors to consider and it's dependent team to team: Flexibility, security, performance, insights, unique compute, and release modeling.
Karthik Gaekwad
I'm a fan of collaboration, so I always look for does it help your team collaborate and make work visible. Also, from a licensing perspective, does it help teams outside your own team view what work your team is upto.
Karthik Gaekwad
Having an anonymous view is often great, and I always think back to my early days at National Instruments, where many teams installed the free 10 license version of JIRA, and we had dozens of free installations of JIRA before we ended up with the managed JIRA service.
Kate Catlin
I agree @iteration1, the name of the game comes down to collaboration. We've had customers tell us directly that starting with CircleCI increased communication across their teams even outside of technical topics.
Kate Catlin
better working together -> better feeling together -> better working together, etc.
Karthik Gaekwad
@Kate_Catlin Agree! I'm a big fan of how you don't need to be logged into circle to be able to view build failures. Just allows folks to be able to solve problems, and the platform doesn't hinder that goal.
Kate Catlin
@iteration1 ... or, with the right tool, helps them accomplish that goal 💪
