Extracting Value from Big Data
JOIN US: This is a chat-based conversation about how IT is rapidly evolving into a new phase that is making high-end data analytics available on a widespread basis—through the cloud, edge computing and web applications. How will your company use this function?

#eweekchatHow Will We Store All OurData?JOIN US: This is a chat-based conversation about how we realistically are going to be storing our business and personal data in places where it will be safe and accessible for years to come. Can the cloud handle all of this? Doubtful.

Thanks again, guys!
Chris Preimesberger
Have a great week, everybody! Until next Second Wednesday, CP out!
Chris Preimesberger
Don't be afraid to join us for next month's topic: "Where Are We Going to Store All This New Data?" on April 10!
Chris Preimesberger
We do these each month at eWEEKchat, Second Wednesday at 11am PT/2pm ET.
Chris Preimesberger
All good, guys! Hope to meet you in person sometime! (say Paul, I'm coming over to Oracle tomorrow, maybe I'll see you there!) Randall, thanks for joining us -- valuable info from you!
Randall Jackvony
Thanks Chris and Paul
Chris Preimesberger
Perhaps we can ask Paul and Randy for a closing summary comment about the future of data analytics in enterprise, and it sure looks pretty bright to me! What do you guys say?
Paul Sonderegger
Analytics is basically an extension of the scientific method: have a hypothesis, take observations, prove or disprove your hypothesis
Paul Sonderegger
Companies of every size have to incorporate this practice into their day-to-day operations or else a more-informed rival will edge them out
Randall Jackvony
Agreed. One of my colleagues showed me a stat that 90% of the world's data has been created in the last 2 years! Imagine the trove of information that is there. True analysis of that will yield so many benefits in healthcare, finance and education.
Randall Jackvony
If companies are not looking at thier data for actionable info - they need to come up with a plan to do so.
Chris Preimesberger
Well, have to say I'm somewhat disappointed in our participation here today, although Paul and Randall, you've been fantastic! Usually we have a couple of dozen (or more) folks chipping in with perspectives. This is our 76th #eweekchat, and sometimes shiitake happens!
Randall Jackvony
The crowd is still recovering from #75! Must have been a blast!
Chris Preimesberger
Randall, that's kind of what journalists like me do ... we see what happened and traverse back to why/how it happened. Man, analytics cold really help me in my job, i suspect!
Chris Preimesberger
Q4: Are large enterprises the ones leading the way here, as they do most new tech, or are smaller, midrange-size companies finding good use for analytics?
Randall Jackvony
smaller/midrange are where many of our clients sit and we see them nibbling at the edges of analytics. We focus on "starting simple" as opposed to an huge dashboard that is so big to overwhelm and not provide too much value (or actionable info).
Paul Sonderegger
for predictive analytics, the key is having large datasets to work with. It's not always large enterprises and tech companies that have these, but that's the way to bet
Paul Sonderegger
having said that, large is relative. If you're a niche company with a well-defined target market, you may have the lion's share of interactions around a particular product category or activity.
Paul Sonderegger
Even if it's a small dataset in absolute terms, it could be big relative to the activity you're trying to make predictions about
Chris Preimesberger
Paul and Randy, can you both talk about how these analytics functions will be used in edge computing scenarios? This looks to be a huge greenfield.
