According to a recent NRDC report, servers at the majority of data centers around the world operate at only about 12-18% of available capacity, resulting in considerable wasted resources and energy inefficient operation.

Very large hyperscale data centers, such as those run by Google, Oracle and IBM etc, get a lot of attention and are very energy efficient, but these data centers represent only about 5% of total national data center usage.

"same system"? In a Cloud Data Center can be a mix of hardware for different purposes, OLTP, DW, Hadoop ... makes me think the network becomes most import to connect it all together

The system is fully automated, and engineers never have to manually configure an individual device. If a device fails, it gets replaced and automatically configured by software.

@JeffFrick while bigger, faster and cheaper is always of interest, I'd ask Larry how Oracle can help make the decisions about where to put #bigdata smarter and more autonomous

When I interviewed Workman Oracle sort of danced around the dedicated All Flash Array discussion - they have't as of yet participated in that space directly

I always question closed systems always have (vs open); the issue is "where is the hard top" bc customers want functionality while avoiding lock in

Data center costs are growing. The future is compact and inexpensive hardware and software combines

azure/aws all going strong. also need to invest in the "next Google" too.

Howie: I am seeing Azure all over my analytics in terms of actual conversations with customers/experts; AWS dominates bc they are leaders in #publiccloud
