Key takeaways: pace of change is growing, data criticality is growing, and your backup solution needs to keep up.
๐”ธ๐•’๐•ฃ๐• ๐•Ÿ ๐•„๐•ฆ๐•ฃ๐•ก๐•™๐•ช
We have talked about the expectation most people have that things online are always there and protected so if we are the IT team and we know that is not the case, then we have to step forward and act now.
Dave Russell ๐Ÿค“
The industry's largest backup research shows that globally that backup success is a major impediment for far too many organizations.
Jason Buffington
Three Key Points = 1) If you arent confident in your current backups across hybrid workloads, CHANGE NOW ... 2) cloud should be part of every #backup strategy ... and 3) if you rely on your data, add Documentation & Orchestration to your #BCDR strategy (instead of manual tasks)
Dave Russell ๐Ÿค“
Another key take-away re, modern data protection is that SLAs and SLOs are not only increasing, but that more and more workloads are deemed mission critical now as compared to even 5 years ago.

The key take away for me on the question of why change backup products is that organisations need to truly understand where their workloads live, what their availability gaps are and answer honestly, does their existing backup solution allow them to meet protection requirements.
Pete Flecha
We know that COVID accelerated cloud adoption, and changed the way organizations do IT. It also identified a lot of potential gaps in data protection and availability. This is where Veeam has always shined!
Dave Russell ๐Ÿค“
One more key take-away is that you can leverage backup for more than backup: "By reusing the trapped data in backups, organizations can drive business analysis, decision making, development and richer customer experiences faster."
Shane Williford
My key takeway? Look at what you're currently using and decide what your future BC/DR needs are, and look to implement those *now*.
Veeam UK
Organisations are looking for more from their data protection systems โ€” lower costs, higher automation, and intelligence and data reuse, to name just a few. Veeam can help.

Very interesting report! Now for Q2: What are the implications of these findings for data management strategy in organisations? 2021 and beyond? https://www.crowdchat.net/s/5675l
https://www.crowdchat.net/s/5675l

Jason Buffington
As orgs accelerated embrace of cloud-services, they are often rapidly now adding data protection of those new cloud services
Michael Cade
My favourite topic today, no platforms are dissappearing we are just adding options and choice to where you store your workloads and data. It is about making sure you have the right solution that spans all of those platforms you use today and might tomorrow.
Jeff Reichard
Leaving stats aside for a minute, a consistent driver for change is the experience of failure with a legacy product. Ransomware is in the news a lot, and it drives big changes in data protection.
Pete Flecha
Most people I speak with say improving RPO/RTO SLAs and reducing costs are the main drivers..
Jeff Reichard
At our #VeeamON conference in May, Herminio Rodriguez (CIO of Sarasota, FL) told us how he traded out failing legacy backup for Veeam and then survived a ransomware attack with minimal downtime and no ransom paid.
Jason Buffington
For others, their legacy HW is sooooo tired (because they kept it 18mo longer than planned due to supply chain), they need to fix onprem before they truly embrace the strategic parts of hybrid
Dave Russell ๐Ÿค“
I really like thinking about backup solutions as being more than availability. Leveraging recent backups of Dev systems is a great way to support DevOps & PlatformOps.
Michael Cade
Physical, Virtual, Cloud IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, Containers, Kubernetes are just some of those platforms then you have the neverending list of Enterprise applications that all need to be protected in potentially different ways.
Ian Sanderson
" What are the implications of these findings for data management strategy in organisations?" One important factor that a lot of organisations forget is data is still their responsibility no matter where it is hosted. Check out this AWS shared responsibility model for clarity https://www.veeam.com/blog/aws-shared-respo
https://www.veeam.com/blog/aws-shared-responsibility-model.html
The AWS Shared Responsibility Model

Jeff Reichard
And staying on the โ€œwhy change your backup application?โ€question, some CIOs are being told they _must_ change their backup solution to add immutability (the ability to ensure backups canโ€™t be deleted by cyber criminals in a ransomware attack).
Michael Cade
. @ian0x0r I believe this has been a realisation of this shared responsibility model over the public cloud offerings and SaaS based offerings
Jeff Reichard
Whoโ€™s telling them this? Their cyber-insurance companies! Fortunately Veeam gives many options for immutable backups either on-prem or in the cloud. You can learn more about this here: https://www.veeam.com/videos/webinar-ransomware-cy...

๐”ธ๐•’๐•ฃ๐• ๐•Ÿ ๐•„๐•ฆ๐•ฃ๐•ก๐•™๐•ช
An increasing focus by regulators on cyber recovery mandate that backup and recovery targets are met and that they are frequently tested. The Reality Gap between IT and business highlighted in the report is big implication
Jeff Reichard
@ian0x0r, great callout for the shared responsibility model. We still do a lot of education around that, all the time...
Pete Flecha
@MichaelCade1 Do you find that people just assume SaaS offerings are protected because "its a service"?
Michael Cade
I am also wanting to point out that if Veeam is not the right fit then I am ok with that, first and foremost you have to consider your data and protecting it.
Dave Russell ๐Ÿค“
I like @jeffreichard's comment re. @veeam and the many ways to achieve immutable backups (yes, tape is one of them)!
Michael Cade
. @vPedroArrow I think this was maybe the case maybe 12-18 months ago but now I think most people appreciate that they do have a responsibilty for their data. Some vendors do not though which is funny, when they are in the news when outages occur.
Shane Williford
When looking at the Report, it states there is an "Availability Gap" by orgs surveyed of around 80%
Jason Buffington
YES @MichaelCade1 -- far too many folks are realizing (too late) that cloud providers dont back up their stuff for free. XaaS is their job to deliver the service; our job is still to protect our data
Shane Williford
What this means is there is a problem between how fast orgs recovery in reality vs how fast they'd like to be able to recover. That is a problem!
Dave Russell ๐Ÿค“
Great point @michaelcade1! Every organization needs to look at their own requirements to determine what is the best solutions for them.
Jason Buffington
Agreed @coolsport00 -- the perception from CXOs is "we arent doing enough" and there is too much gap between what the business expects and what IT can deliver
Pete Flecha
With organizations accelerating cloud adoption globally, how important is location for backups (as it pertains to restoring data)??
๐”ธ๐•’๐•ฃ๐• ๐•Ÿ ๐•„๐•ฆ๐•ฃ๐•ก๐•™๐•ช
Agreed @michaelcade1 - what is most important is that everyone makes appropriate decisions to protect their data
Ian Sanderson
And it is not just backup @Jbuff and @michaelcade1, security is often lacking as well when data is moved to the aaS model. Opening organisation up to be exploited. A good data protection policy is a must.
Dave Russell ๐Ÿค“
Good comment @vPedroArrow about many orgs assuming that their SaaS application is fully protected by the provider. If you look at most SaaS contracts, they never mention "backup" in them. @ItsStillYourData
Shane Williford
Great couple questions @vPedroArrow ! Location certainly has to be considered to meet recoverability SLAs.
Veeam UK
The implications according to the 3000 participants who took part in the research are that they want integrated data protection and security (35%), cloud workload portability (36%), and the ability to do disaster recovery via a cloud service (38%). Not a surprise?
Jeff Reichard
And back to wonking out on the "why": on average, 23% of servers had at least one expected outage in the last 12 months (with 37% of organizations stating up to 50% of their servers had at least one outage).
Michael Cade
I think we have seen over the last 12-18 months which ties into this report that security and backup are also merging or very much getting closer together from a top of mind or thought process at least. https://i0.wp.com/cloudsecurityknowledgesharing.co...
https://i0.wp.com/cloudsecurityknowledgesharing.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/ISC2_CCSP_Shared_Responsibility_Model.png?fit=813%2C358&ssl=1

Shane Williford
That is a concerning number imo @jeffreichard . I personally don't know the last time I had a server outage at any of my last 2 orgs. What are others' input? Do you all experience such 'frequent' server outages?
Veeam UK
When asked about the catalyst for change, 36% of respondents said to improve RPO/RTO SLAs, 31% to improve backup reliability, and 30% to reduce costs. Do you agree? https://www.crowdchat.net/s/0676r
https://www.crowdchat.net/s/0676r

๐”ธ๐•’๐•ฃ๐• ๐•Ÿ ๐•„๐•ฆ๐•ฃ๐•ก๐•™๐•ช
@vPedroArrow I wish more people would read the terms and conditions - best efforts for recovery is not an SLA
Ian Sanderson
Classic IT response to this one @coolsport00, it depends :). I have seen an uptick in servers and services being brought down due to ransomware.

Dave Russell ๐Ÿค“
+1 @jeffreichard for why backup still matters in 2021. Looks at these self-reported outage and success rates. https://www.crowdchat.net/s/4676x
https://www.crowdchat.net/s/4676x

Jeff Reichard
@ammurphy777 exactly! And the remedies are all around downtime, not data loss!
Chris Childerhose
@coolsport00 80% is definitely a gap :)
Pete Flecha
I remember not to long ago modern apps were stateless and nobody cared about backups.. Not the case today
Shane Williford
Indeed Pete...insert #Kasten here! :)
Chris Childerhose
@ian0x0r most definitely as we have had a Ransomware call per week for the past month for clients. It is scary.
Pete Flecha
Yeah that was a brilliant acquisition I must say...

This is what you guys were referring to: The research showed that one-third (34%) of all restorations fail to restore within the expected SLA.
https://www.crowdchat.net/s/46774
https://www.crowdchat.net/s/46774

Michael Cade
I think its also worth mentioning that not everyone needs to be at the cutting edge and people should not be percieved as behind the curve, but the ability to just know about where the next platform or where your data and apps might live is super important.
Pete Flecha
Nobody took ransomware seriously (until the east coast couldn't get gas for a week ) LOL
Shane Williford
@MichaelCade1 for sure...as I'm of course a proponent of the SMB, this is the case I believe for such orgs
Jeff Reichard
Great link @michaelcade1 - the more people see this the better!
Pete Flecha
@MichaelCade1 Agreed. Nice to know you have a solution you can grow into though..
Veeam UK
I'm sure we can agree that modern data protection is rapidly accelerating through cloud adoption. Globally, organisations are taking advantage of cloud backup for their entire data protection portfolio. But there are apparently regional differences: https://www.crowdchat.net/s/4677d
https://www.crowdchat.net/s/4677d

Al Rasheed
@vPedroArrow sad but true! I remember going out for a drive one morning and the gas station nearby didn't have one car pumping gas. I returned an hour later, the line was 20 cars deep.
Pete Flecha
@coolsport00 I know @lost_signal is a big supporter of CIFS
Shane Williford
Another interesting note from the Report - 37% of orgs state their b/u's have errors or couldn't complete within SLAs; what this means?...1/3 of restores not possible potentially. #Drastic

(edited)

Dave Russell ๐Ÿค“
@al_rasheed & @vPedroArrow Sadly things can snowball quickly. Important to plan ahead, and ideally modernize ahead of time.
Dave Russell ๐Ÿค“
Great stat @coolsport00! Backup success rates remain challenging for many organizations.
Michael Cade
I think the beyond is also an interesting topic here for the question, like where does data management go next? lots of SaaS options out there that seem to be the new "innovation" but is it? who protects that data? But what is really next... has to be some form of intelligence?
