I'm here in Silicon Valley! Thanks for hosting this!
Drew Bratcher
Sunset District, San Francisco :)
John Furrier
Palo Alto; top trending conversations in this topic are #SDN #openstack #nfv #dcim #power #iot
Stuart Miniman
hi from Patriots territory (Massachusetts)
John Furrier
First lets just get this out of the way - #patriots did not deflate any footballs
Jim @ CWPBIZ
Boston here...by way of #KansasCity. :-) #GoPats
Howie Xu
@theCUBE happy new year to all!
Dave Vellante
with stu but hanging in Pali this week
Jerry Overton
@CWPBIZ in St. Lous...not to far from #KansasCity.
John Furrier
What questions should I ask Larry Ellison tomorrow on @theCUBE ?? I'll ask him the direct questions live
Howie Xu
who is the boss at Oracle? :)
Jerry Overton
ask his take on dominant business models for monetizing IoT solutions.
Jeff Frick
> Every year, Larry and Mark come on stage and talk about bigger, faster, cheaper (Moore's law commercialized).
What's different this time?
How have Cloud, Mobile, Social, Big Data changed the game beyond bigger, faster stronger?
Jeff Frick
@geliefan > Is that really a question? Ever in doubt?
Peter Herdman-Grant
when can we expect him to make peace with VMware and allow customers to choose their hypervisor on Oracle servers
John Furrier
I am expecting Larry to come on theCUBE
Lawrence
@JeffFrick while bigger, faster and cheaper is always of interest, I'd ask Larry how Oracle can help make the decisions about where to put #bigdata smarter and more autonomous
Bjoern Rost
So what are we expecting for the #oracle launch event tomorrow? Exadata refresh, systems based on M7 chip or yet something completely new for the #datacenter? http://eventreg.orac...
Announcing the Next Generation of Oracle Engineered Systems
Extreme performance means getting the job done in a flash -- faster, better, and more efficiently than it has been done before...
John Furrier
I have not been told yet but expect something that Larry will say will be epic and amazing
John Furrier
I heard a rumor that ExaCube will be huge
John Furrier
Seriously I would bet to see something around storage, flash, and something about prices or economic changes
Ariana Gradow
All I know is they are planning to launch something completely new. Join us tomorrow! https://www.crowdcha...
Ariana Gradow
Oracle is keeping it secret
Crowd Captain
looking at the schedule it looks like a variety of announcements
Bjoern Rost
@furrier is ExaCube the new codename for the Oracle Games Console? #OGC
John Furrier
theCUBE is our live broadcast show :-) @theCUBE Exa of course is their flagship Exadata
John Furrier
Is the Internet of Things #IoT a real trend or hype? If it's real why is the new converged infrastructure important?
Howie Xu
scale-out vs. scale-up, cloud vs. fog, aggregation vs. disaggregation, all sweet depending on the context
Crowd Captain
@geliefan To me the notion of a connected "device at the edge" is the #IoT oppty; workloads are variable and very diverse
Stuart Miniman
there are pieces of #IoT that hold great potential (Industrial Internet, wearables), but the overall term is more noise than substance. Similar to how big data term, needs maturity and real uses defined.
John Furrier
Stu Internet of Everything is what Cisco says; GE says Industrial Internet; the rest of the world just calls it the Internet
John Furrier
@geliefan Howie great to see you on the Crowdchat today. You're interview at #oow was very strong
Kevin Petrie
The IoT has very real potential for enterprises to improve operations - for example, planes can be serviced more cost effectively and oil can be discovered more quickly based on correlation of telemetry and other data. Precision will matter>data volume.
Dave Vellante
The concept of a "Single Managed Entity" for infrastructure is going mainstream http://wikibon.org/w...

Dave Vellante
This is a chart Floyer did last year - It basically talks to the notion of converged systems and is based on the premise that the further up the stack you go the more value you can create
Dave Vellante
The tradeoff for customers is if it's a "full stack" approach you limit the general purpose nature of the system
Dave Vellante
But within the stack you will likely deliver more value
Dave Vellante
The so-called hyperconverged guys understand this (e.g. Nutanix, Simplivity, Evo Rail) - The more integration...generally the more value
Stuart Miniman
according to Floyer's model, as you go higher in the stack, value increases exponentially - Oracle and IBM have done the best at integrating applications
Peter Herdman-Grant
customers prefer more choice the higher up the stack, the exception to this has come about with commodity hardware
Peter Herdman-Grant

> Thanks for sharing, hadn't seen that one.
John Furrier
I think that validates that "cloud" needs to run on something - btw: that was Larry's quote at the famous Churchill Club interview with Ed Zander back in the day
Crowd Captain
@furrier here is the Larry Ellison video that now is part of Silicon Valley tech culture https://www.youtube....
Ariana Gradow
Of course it's in Iowa ;)
Ariana Gradow
The system is fully automated, and engineers never have to manually configure an individual device. If a device fails, it gets replaced and automatically configured by software.
Ariana Gradow
Sounds like a great new approach
John Furrier
I think that FB and Amazon have great datacenter strategies; many enterprises want to be like them
Crowd Captain
Storage is a new focus for Oracle's innovation @theCUBE interviewed SVP Mike Workman at #oow last year https://www.youtube....
Mike Workman - Oracle OpenWorld 2014 - theCUBE (White)
Mike Workman, Oracle Storage, at Oracle OpenWorld 2014 with Dave Vellante and Stu Miniman @theCUBE #*OOW14*
John Furrier
Flash was a big part of that conversation with Mike and @dvellante at #oow
John Furrier
Having an integrated compute, storage, and virtualization environment fully baked would be a competitive advantage
Dave Vellante
When I interviewed Workman Oracle sort of danced around the dedicated All Flash Array discussion - they have't as of yet participated in that space directly
Peter Herdman-Grant
interesting Dave, do you remember Larry's curious comparison with XtremIO at OOW? wasn't he pitching FS1 as an AFA play?
Dave Vellante
@DBAStorage I do...it was a read-only workload comparison...no writes
