scale-out vs. scale-up, cloud vs. fog, aggregation vs. disaggregation, all sweet depending on the context

@geliefan To me the notion of a connected "device at the edge" is the #IoT oppty; workloads are variable and very diverse

there are pieces of #IoT that hold great potential (Industrial Internet, wearables), but the overall term is more noise than substance. Similar to how big data term, needs maturity and real uses defined.

The IoT has very real potential for enterprises to improve operations - for example, planes can be serviced more cost effectively and oil can be discovered more quickly based on correlation of telemetry and other data. Precision will matter>data volume.

This is a chart Floyer did last year - It basically talks to the notion of converged systems and is based on the premise that the further up the stack you go the more value you can create

The tradeoff for customers is if it's a "full stack" approach you limit the general purpose nature of the system

But within the stack you will likely deliver more value

The so-called hyperconverged guys understand this (e.g. Nutanix, Simplivity, Evo Rail) - The more integration...generally the more value

according to Floyer's model, as you go higher in the stack, value increases exponentially - Oracle and IBM have done the best at integrating applications

customers prefer more choice the higher up the stack, the exception to this has come about with commodity hardware

I think that validates that "cloud" needs to run on something - btw: that was Larry's quote at the famous Churchill Club interview with Ed Zander back in the day

The system is fully automated, and engineers never have to manually configure an individual device. If a device fails, it gets replaced and automatically configured by software.

Having an integrated compute, storage, and virtualization environment fully baked would be a competitive advantage

When I interviewed Workman Oracle sort of danced around the dedicated All Flash Array discussion - they have't as of yet participated in that space directly
