#csctechtalk01/29 TechTalk SoundbitesThe Evolution of Hanlon OSS for automated server provisioning
Tom McSweeney
For those who are interested, @danhushon mentioned our work around automation using Ansible; we've been working out of a private repository under our http://www.github.co... organization; contact me for details if you are interested in participation
Jeff Ely
Yes, this looks like a great start to more automation of CSC work processess
Matt
@steve_erhardt Think you'll find this valuable!
Rich Reba
how does Ansible relate to Hanlon?
Tom McSweeney
we use #hanlon for discovery and bare-metal provisioning, #ansible for configuration management and automation
Tom McSweeney
we are currently working to link #hanlon and #ansible to each other (so that we can automate the entire process)
Sorin Costea
ah there it goes my hope for SaltStack minions
Tom McSweeney
unfortunately, #saltstack wants to control the entire process (from provisioning all the way through configuration management); makes integration with #hanlon hard
Sorin Costea
eh that very true...
Ciaran Finnegan
are you using Chef for Windows?
Carl Kinson
One great exmaple of the threads working together as part of the transformation program is the pilot to use CSC Big Data Platform to develop a set of anlaytics which provides reports based on Simon Wardleys Value Chain Mapping for the TDC and IRB Process.
Jerry Overton
hoping to present this as a case study at TechCom
Matt
@swardley mapping is brilliant, one of those amazingly obvious yet unpracticed things
Carl Kinson
@JerryAOverton agree, this is a nice Client 0 use case, helping CSC to make business decisions, whilst using CSC Big Data Offerings. Great work Jerry.
Carl Kinson
@matt, agree i would suggest to everyone to make yourself familiar with this process, information and tools availble through the Leading Edge Forum LEF site.
Paul
Big focus now is "get stuff done" - great opportunity to use TechCom to deploy into the field and have our attendees take great work back into their teams. Then use it as a launch pad for the next phase in support of our strategic objectives!!
Bob Donnelly
Yes, put to have all programs & threads have a product out by TechCom #gitrdone
Rick Wilhelm
And just another plug that if anyone has ideas for things to put on the agenda to TechComm... just contact someone like @richrebajr or @phowarth001 to get the topic considered.
Jerry Overton
Any tips/best practices on "get stuff done?" MVP has been helpful. Any others?
Lisa Braun
@JerryAOverton Continuous improvement. Incremental releases. Both tie to MVP. Fail fast helps too.
Lisa Braun
Check out the Skills Passport Challenge Dan mentioned, which includes an app-a-thon in March. Contribute ideas and/or coding skills--techies and non-techies welcome! Get involved here: https://c3.csc.com/c...

Craig Van der Velden
An exciting Challenge Lisa! Looking forward to watching the exciting journey!
Lisa Braun
@cpvdv Yes, ideas are starting to come in. Bring along a friend or two!
Lisa Braun
@cpvdv Ah Craig, didn't know it was you :)
Jeff Ely
Yes, the Skills Passport is just starting to take shape and the C3 page is live with content. Join and start discussions on how you would like to see it evolve.
Lisa Braun
@cpvdv Can you say more about the vision of the Skills Passport Challenge and what we hope to achieve? It's a real way to jump in and help w/career path development.
Craig Van der Velden
Absolutely! The SP Challenge arose from a desire within our teams to better track and manage their skills portfolio, including work experiences and abilities
Craig Van der Velden
Taking this we began to embark on this journey of creating an app which empowers people to know what skills they have today, and the skills they need to develop along their career path
Lisa Braun
Skills Passport Challenge especially targets our young professionals for career planning but it would be an app for everyone to track skills, experiences, training, etc in one place. And take with them from role to role. First step is ideation & concept.
Jeff Ely
@cpvdv mentioned the drive it to create an app that CSC'er can use to track you skills and accomplishments, while providing a path for future growth.
Matt
What areas/layers of the organisation are thread owners looking for contributors from?
Nicholas O'Rourke
I would suggest just hopping on a thread that interests you and joining the biweekly calls
Ryal Cox
Top to bottom - for Thread F (Professional Services) we need contributors from the origination of offerings through sales through solutioning through operations
Rich Reba
this is a community not an org - so layer doesn't matter
Paul
At every level - contribute and/or learn too. A great way to find out what is happening on many fronts across the company
Rick Wilhelm
Um... all. The closer the the doing the better. I don't think it terms of layer, area, or geography.
Rich Reba
what matters is - what does your day job require + what interests you + what energy can you bring to the solutions we need
Matt
I attend most of the thread calls, very informative, thanks for discussion today Paul :)
Yogesh Khanna
In thread A, I am looking for those of you who are client facing to collaborate with the thread A team and construct real world use cases where we can apply our sensing and response ecosystem to shape an offering that directly impacts that client.
Carl Kinson
For those CSC'ers out there, i would ask that you make time to tell five colleges about the transformation program, and then get them tell five of their colleges and so on, do it on a team call or on over a coffee. Spread the word.
Ryal Cox
What would the CSC Technology community consider to be "best in class" for Professional Services? Why?
Carl Kinson
Client Focused, Industry and Sector knowledge, with the ability to translate business need into IT solutions.
Dan Hushon
equipped with double deep skills and evidence to help clients move with less risk
Yogesh Khanna
Follow on business, or recompete wins, are the best indicators that we are delivering services that our clients value.
Yogesh Khanna
Fusion of technical and business skills applied to address mission or business needs.
Matt
Build a Consultancy service from Individuals with both specialisms and breadth of technical skill, Put them in-front of the customer supporting existing and new opportunities
Ryal Cox
Who in industry would you consider to be premier examples of these attributes?
Yogesh Khanna
What are some of the key sensors you use to shape your go to market strategies?
Jerry Overton
analtyics: surveying public conversations for themes and insights.
Yogesh Khanna
Are there best of breed tools or methods you recommend that everyone across CSC ought to consider using to capture these public conversations?
Heather Simpson 🌈🍃
Sorry about the rough connection today, thanks for hanging in there with us! Maybe its #Snowmageddon2015? Show us your picture, @danhushon!
Bob Donnelly
Apps are as good as the network they require. I learned that lesson a few decades ago while working on NASA's Deep Space Network.
Lisa Braun
