Do these acquisitions imply the big consolidation, and hence the close of ecosystem? Your thoughts?
Manju Ramanathpura
you know I thought about it a bit. Kinda glad @blueboxjesse guys are still operating standalone - good for community.
David Pollack
might just be rearrangement of deck chairs. too early to tell
Manju Ramanathpura
But I don't necessarily think this is close or ecosystem as well. Startup will be replaced by some of the large companies in the ecosystem. Like RH, HP, IBM.....
Sriram Subramanian
not with their big $10M funding round. they're aiming big @blueboxjesse
David Pollack
Some majors do better job driving ecosystem than others
...
old gives way to new - I blogged here: https://medium.com/@...
The OpenStack opportunity
ps: I am not a fan of on-prem products, but whether I like something or not is immaterial to what actually happens in th…
Sriram Subramanian
also @nebula is still standing alone.
Jesse Proudman
It's Nebula, Mirantis, Piston and Blue Box now left. Plus the latest entrants like Platform 9.
Sriram Subramanian
my concern about big players are
Rob Hirschfeld
it takes more time ($) to start an infrastructure business than people expect. startups fume & bigCo acquire to catchup
Sriram Subramanian
might slow down the innovation, worried about revenue targets at the short time
Jesse Proudman
This is an indication on the validity of this market. Every one wants a seat at the table and wants a strong story to tell, yet it's hard for most enterprises to generate that story on their own.
Sriram Subramanian
and might be scared to do something bold/ unconventional
Jesse Proudman
@zehicle Market timing is also critical. It wasn't until more recently that buyers were ready to sink material investment into OpenStack proper.
Rob Hirschfeld
@blueboxjesse I see this as waves of entrants. hard to time community
Sriram Subramanian
so i am hearing positive comments about the consolidation thats happening now. not necessarily closing the eco system
Evan Powell
Users want something that does a job for them. We repackage open stack ended up not being a job many especially early users of OpenStack found to be valuable.
...
we are like 1/10 of the way dude - we ain't seen nothing yet - 10-15 yr play with OS.
David Pollack
@blueboxjesse Good vendors work with enterprises to help them generate the story
Jesse Proudman
It's an incredibly healthy sign for the ecosystem in general.
Sriram Subramanian
@blueboxjesse agreed. and interestingly, it is when many of the analysts started moving from strongly negative views to neutral/ semi positive reviews on OpenStack
Rob Hirschfeld
@blueboxjesse if you think back to the Bexar summit in SA, there was an even earlier group that left (Citrix, Accenture...)
Jeff Dickey
I don't think OpenStack is ready as a product for the eco-system to be closed yet.
Sriram Subramanian
Any idea how many startups having booth at paris summit?
David Pollack
@nextcast It wouldn't hurt if some of the majors provide market leadership in driving ecoystem
Jeff Dickey
@blueboxjesse BTW, congrats to you and the Bluebox team. Awesome news!
Sriram Subramanian
@cloud_opinion i like how you started addressing yourself as 'we' in the OpenStack channels!
Sriram Subramanian
@DavidMPollack it wouldn't. but usually not. rt?
David Pollack
Sad but true. Golden opportunity for someone to step up to plate, n'est pas?
Manju Ramanathpura
@nextcast oh excuse me. How naive of me to leave them out.
Manju Ramanathpura
lol nothing big, @nextcast gently reminded us for not including Oracle as one of the enterprise OpenStack player.
John Furrier
What does everyone think about EMC buying Cloudscaling? Good or bad for the ecosystem?
Jeff Dickey
I think it's a great thing if they treat Cloudscaling like they treated VMware
David H. Deans 🌐
Likely to be very good for Randy Bias, don't you think?
Rob Hirschfeld
they are clearly coming into the ecosystem in a big way.
Sriram Subramanian
Its good topic, i want to wait until DefCore thread is over. OK?
Rob Hirschfeld
gives them a chance to pull together all their related properties
John Furrier
I heard that Cisco was in the mix but not confirmed but I think that consolidation is a sign of health and oppty bc big boys are moving in
Jeff Dickey
@zehicle What will happen next year when all of the OEMs have their own proprietary version of OpenStack? Will they actually continue to contribute when they are competing head-to-head?
Sriram Subramanian
ok - ppl are piling on here :)
Carl Brooks
good for Cloudscaling, good for EMC, not a bit of diff to ecosystem
Sriram Subramanian
I think it is good for the eco system
David Pollack
Hopefully they can leave them like VMware so Randy can help connect dots for EMC
Stuart Miniman
@nextcast Cloudscaling doesn't have the size or revenue to be completely independent inside EMC; it will help build the EMC OpenStack+commodity hw stack solution group which should have ability to not follow the same GTM/plans as core-EMC
Sriram Subramanian
I see this as a precursor to what i call as second wave of OpenStack Startups
Jeff Dickey
Who's next? Piston?
David Pollack
Who or what types of companies in second ware Sriram?
Sriram Subramanian
Guessing games are good. But as long as they dont hurt their chances.
Sriram Subramanian
I see first wave of startups tackled on installation/ distribution/ one on security
David Pollack
Guessing games are good for friends and family stock options :-)
Sriram Subramanian
we need more. next wave will look in to management/ operations/ applications/ compliance and more
David Pollack
i.e. pull everything together for customer production implimentations
Manju Ramanathpura
@stu spot on with your observation on EMC & Cloudscaling. Part of me also thinks this is a service play for EMC, not just ( or may not be at all ) a product/solution play. What do you think?
Stuart Miniman
@ItsTheNetwork for EMC to be successful in open source - and they are trying w projects like @EMCCODE - it will definitely need to have a large service component. And EMC has more services than most people realize.
Randy Bias
No comment. I can only say that I am who I am all that this entails. Expect the same/norm. Philosophical alignment is high.
Jeff Dickey
@randybias There he is. Congrats to you and your amazing team Randy!
cloud foreign
@randybias congrats! You've always fought the good fight and I for one will still be looking up to you for that!
Jesse Proudman
I think it's wonderful news and I'm very much looking forward to EMC's October 28th announcement. It's obvious they've put some thought into a much larger roadmap.
