But I don't necessarily think this is close or ecosystem as well. Startup will be replaced by some of the large companies in the ecosystem. Like RH, HP, IBM.....

not with their big $10M funding round. they're aiming big @blueboxjesse

It's Nebula, Mirantis, Piston and Blue Box now left. Plus the latest entrants like Platform 9.

my concern about big players are

it takes more time ($) to start an infrastructure business than people expect. startups fume & bigCo acquire to catchup

might slow down the innovation, worried about revenue targets at the short time

This is an indication on the validity of this market. Every one wants a seat at the table and wants a strong story to tell, yet it's hard for most enterprises to generate that story on their own.

and might be scared to do something bold/ unconventional

@zehicle Market timing is also critical. It wasn't until more recently that buyers were ready to sink material investment into OpenStack proper.

so i am hearing positive comments about the consolidation thats happening now. not necessarily closing the eco system

Users want something that does a job for them. We repackage open stack ended up not being a job many especially early users of OpenStack found to be valuable.

we are like 1/10 of the way dude - we ain't seen nothing yet - 10-15 yr play with OS.

It's an incredibly healthy sign for the ecosystem in general.

@blueboxjesse agreed. and interestingly, it is when many of the analysts started moving from strongly negative views to neutral/ semi positive reviews on OpenStack

@blueboxjesse if you think back to the Bexar summit in SA, there was an even earlier group that left (Citrix, Accenture...)

I don't think OpenStack is ready as a product for the eco-system to be closed yet.

I heard that Cisco was in the mix but not confirmed but I think that consolidation is a sign of health and oppty bc big boys are moving in

@zehicle What will happen next year when all of the OEMs have their own proprietary version of OpenStack? Will they actually continue to contribute when they are competing head-to-head?

Hopefully they can leave them like VMware so Randy can help connect dots for EMC

@nextcast Cloudscaling doesn't have the size or revenue to be completely independent inside EMC; it will help build the EMC OpenStack+commodity hw stack solution group which should have ability to not follow the same GTM/plans as core-EMC

I see this as a precursor to what i call as second wave of OpenStack Startups

we need more. next wave will look in to management/ operations/ applications/ compliance and more

@stu spot on with your observation on EMC & Cloudscaling. Part of me also thinks this is a service play for EMC, not just ( or may not be at all ) a product/solution play. What do you think?

@ItsTheNetwork for EMC to be successful in open source - and they are trying w projects like @EMCCODE - it will definitely need to have a large service component. And EMC has more services than most people realize.

No comment. I can only say that I am who I am all that this entails. Expect the same/norm. Philosophical alignment is high.

I think it's wonderful news and I'm very much looking forward to EMC's October 28th announcement. It's obvious they've put some thought into a much larger roadmap.
