A barrier is how much would an existing database architect need to know to get started? Visualization tools, R, statistics? What is the training curriculum? Where are projects with openings?
Slightly different topic. In Data rEvolution (2011) we talked about the rise of the data scientist and the need to "let the data lead." You may not know the Qs or problems up front. http://assets1.csc.c...
@Max_Hemingway I have been working on a project to breakdown skills by job categories. One of them is data scientist. The project is called Project LightSpeed in C3. I believe that will give you a good start to what skills are related to data scientists.
Have you done any work on CSC Cyber projects relating to the very large and diverse datasets related to security logging? I see a strong potential for CSC to develop an intelligent Cyber defense network that allows customers to respond to emerging threats
that's a great idea - I think half the battle is identifying the right data sets to work from in the first place, and then turning those insights into some form of actionable information
A likely approach is to start with our Cyber CTO (Dean Weber) to discuss real-world Cyber business opportunities. We use ArcSight for correlation, but data mining really needs to be improved in our industry. Who should we contact on your end?
There has been a lot of work in the area of using Machine Learning for this type of problem. Using the log results along with other datasets. It is a fascinating and difficult problem but one that would be very useful and interesting to work on
@Guy: I have a similar request in a big public organization. They are also asking for security logging, and how they can use it in an intelligent way to prevent future threats
it seems boring, but at the moment I am fascinated of MS PowerPivot combined with Excel, because you can get very fast results you can share with other people. Particular if you have already good Excel skills. The only problem I see is to get it online.
Qualities of a data scientist? @datascience_SPM: Driven. Curious. Problem-solver. Natural-born Tinkerer. Is that you? See the field guide: https://www.rebelmou...
Curiosity + Persistance, I think is the magic formula. If this stuff is inherently interesting to you and you're tough enough to stick it out. I think you have a future in data science.
@rickwilhelm Thanks for sharing. The problem of "data wrangling...the gathering, cleaning and organizing of disparate data, which is plentiful but messy." A necessary evil at the moment before you get to insights.
They have some definite similarities; however, data science definitely tends to focus more on the machine learning than solely on the statistics of a dataset. This is just in my experience though. A data analyst may very well be a data sci in hiding :)
This is to the wider audience attending this event...how do we engage other parts of the Company to partner with the Data Scientists in the RN to contribute to the internal and client issues trying to be solved?
Good question. This is about data-driven results and marketing your capability widely. We can try to help there but corp sales & marketing groups should help leverage.
We need to continue to share what the possibilities are through working together. The partnership between the Data Scientists and HR has been very valuable, and we have just started to scratch the surface.
And I think we need a regular forum for reaching out...plus, I'd like to see the RN extend the opportunity for other parts to engage via micro projects.
Trial and error. Theory is a great asset with you are digging into a particular model (the actual optimization equations behind it) but to see how this stuff works in the real world just find a dataset and see what you can "pull" from it
@DataScience_SPM Where/who to talk about an idea where Data Science could make significant improvements to our End-user support? Validate concepts etc?
Reach out to me (or anyone on the FutureTense team) directly and we will invite you to our Ideation session Wednesdays at 11am for you to bring up the problem and see if we can help solve it
You have to...well...leap. I've seen some who are never quite confident that they are ready to be a "real" data scientist, and I think that's a shame. In the end, you just have to jump in.
