Data Science for Social Good...anyone interested in collaborating with me on future projects around this?
Adrian D. Lorenzana
Sounds interesting!
Lisa Braun
Maybe target B corporations, whose missions incorporate doing social good.
Rick Wilhelm
Data Science for Social Good: Sounds like a great #opensource effort
Jerry Overton
Making your way into data science? What's the biggest barrier you've had to getting started?
Henry Helgen
A barrier is how much would an existing database architect need to know to get started? Visualization tools, R, statistics? What is the training curriculum? Where are projects with openings?
Jerry Overton
@HenryHelgen Good one. I'd like to see a roadmap telling different, existing IT roles the clearest path from where they are into data science.
Max Hemingway
Understanding of your knowledge and skills today vs where they need to be and what can be done short term
Lisa Braun
Slightly different topic. In Data rEvolution (2011) we talked about the rise of the data scientist and the need to "let the data lead." You may not know the Qs or problems up front. http://assets1.csc.c...
Theyaa Matti
@Max_Hemingway I have been working on a project to breakdown skills by job categories. One of them is data scientist. The project is called Project LightSpeed in C3. I believe that will give you a good start to what skills are related to data scientists.
Guy Crumpley
Have you done any work on CSC Cyber projects relating to the very large and diverse datasets related to security logging? I see a strong potential for CSC to develop an intelligent Cyber defense network that allows customers to respond to emerging threats
Paul
that's a great idea - I think half the battle is identifying the right data sets to work from in the first place, and then turning those insights into some form of actionable information
Guy Crumpley
A likely approach is to start with our Cyber CTO (Dean Weber) to discuss real-world Cyber business opportunities. We use ArcSight for correlation, but data mining really needs to be improved in our industry. Who should we contact on your end?
Steven Melanson
There has been a lot of work in the area of using Machine Learning for this type of problem. Using the log results along with other datasets. It is a fascinating and difficult problem but one that would be very useful and interesting to work on
Paul
Reach out to Jerry or to Sue Cronizer as a start point
Guy Crumpley
I think so, too. I'd like to suggest some collaboration to our CTO. Who would be a good contact on your end?
Jerry Overton
@phowarth001 Definitely, lets connect and get a new project launched on this.
Markus
@Guy: I have a similar request in a big public organization. They are also asking for security logging, and how they can use it in an intelligent way to prevent future threats
Guy Crumpley
Markus: Send me your CSC shortname. I'll include you on the correspondence I've already sent out to our CTO. Would like to see your inputs!
Markus
perfect, in this moment I have the same idea :). You will find me as "mhoffmann2".
Kyle Zellman
What are some of the myths surrounding data science that we can clear up?
Mike Trusty
Do you have to have a large data set to work with, or can you apply the tools to smaller data sets?
Kyle Zellman
@mtrusty3 You ABSOLUTELY can apply this stuff to small datasets.
Jerry Overton
That's a good one. It's very frustrating the assumption that you have to have terabytes of data or more to do real data science -- not true.
Jerry Overton
Wish I could vote twice for this!
Jerry Overton
What's the coolest application of data science you've seen?
Mike Trusty
Has to be the IT Skills Analysis in the predictive modeling lab
Markus
it seems boring, but at the moment I am fascinated of MS PowerPivot combined with Excel, because you can get very fast results you can share with other people. Particular if you have already good Excel skills. The only problem I see is to get it online.

Qualities of a data scientist? @datascience_SPM: Driven. Curious. Problem-solver. Natural-born Tinkerer. Is that you? See the field guide: https://www.rebelmou...

Curiosity + Persistance, I think is the magic formula. If this stuff is inherently interesting to you and you're tough enough to stick it out. I think you have a future in data science.
Lisa Braun
@rickwilhelm Thanks for sharing. The problem of "data wrangling...the gathering, cleaning and organizing of disparate data, which is plentiful but messy." A necessary evil at the moment before you get to insights.
Rick Wilhelm
@LisaAnneBraun Gotta wallow in the data to get inside of it (and get insight on it)
Periyarselvi Mehalingam
How data science differ from data analytics?
Steven Melanson
They have some definite similarities; however, data science definitely tends to focus more on the machine learning than solely on the statistics of a dataset. This is just in my experience though. A data analyst may very well be a data sci in hiding :)
Sue Cronizer
This is to the wider audience attending this event...how do we engage other parts of the Company to partner with the Data Scientists in the RN to contribute to the internal and client issues trying to be solved?
Paul
good example of a potential application in Cyber area from Guy Crumpley in another posting.... any others out there?
Lisa Braun
Good question. This is about data-driven results and marketing your capability widely. We can try to help there but corp sales & marketing groups should help leverage.
Max Hemingway
Examples of solving business issues with Data Science to discuss/showcase with customers would be beneficial
Mike Trusty
We need to continue to share what the possibilities are through working together. The partnership between the Data Scientists and HR has been very valuable, and we have just started to scratch the surface.
Jerry Overton
And I think we need a regular forum for reaching out...plus, I'd like to see the RN extend the opportunity for other parts to engage via micro projects.
Sue Cronizer
Agreed the goal is to find the right people throughout CSC to connect and collaborate with
Matt
How do you make the leap from learning theory into a real world application?
Steven Melanson
Trial and error. Theory is a great asset with you are digging into a particular model (the actual optimization equations behind it) but to see how this stuff works in the real world just find a dataset and see what you can "pull" from it
Matt
i.e. working with "demo" datasets is often very different to internal, client, real world generated dats
Matt
@DataScience_SPM Where/who to talk about an idea where Data Science could make significant improvements to our End-user support? Validate concepts etc?
Steven Melanson
Reach out to me (or anyone on the FutureTense team) directly and we will invite you to our Ideation session Wednesdays at 11am for you to bring up the problem and see if we can help solve it
Jerry Overton
You have to...well...leap. I've seen some who are never quite confident that they are ready to be a "real" data scientist, and I think that's a shame. In the end, you just have to jump in.
Henry Helgen

Thanks. I really want to add more to the data and visualization section. I'd welcome any suggestions.
