Jerry Overton
For the next Soundbite, I'd like to see a GitHub demo. A "developers eye view" on how to get started in Open Source.
Paul
good idea... maybe a sub-stream of practical "how to" demos
Lisa Braun
Good idea. We'll note that. @JonesBells @phowarth001
Tom McSweeney
we've got a few documents that might help get that sort of demo kickstarted
Tom McSweeney
shows an example GitHub workflow for a project following a fork and merge model
vivek vardhan vandrangi
A lot of videos regarding GITHUB are found in Youtub and Coursera
Ernesto Diaz
What's your view of #opensource from business development perspective? How can we stimulate conversations in our clients leveraged by #opensource?
Chris Fangmann
Lots of talking points in my view - Quality, broad participation, review, value for money....
Jerry Overton
I think it could be one of @CSC's most powerful outside-in client engagement strategies.
Soren Helsted
no lock-in, resources available, lower licence costs, and many clients are actually already on this page
Chris Fangmann
@JerryAOverton Can't vote more than once...sorry
Andy Booth
My experience is with customers who think it is long overdue - as far as they are concerned we're just catching up.
Ernesto Diaz
I believe it's a efficient way to re-use existing IP and kick-off engagements without prior investments from our clients...IaaS needed.
Ernesto Diaz
@JerryAOverton agree and a fast way to start.....
Paul
great lead-in for sales and building relationships - also underlines the "co-creation" agenda
Rick Wilhelm
(for biz dev) #opensource enables inspection and provides proof points
Rich Reba
@rorti33 but as a company primarily focused on services vs. products, we aren't carrying a lot of baggage and so we can catch up really fast
James Eaton
@richrebajr Not totally - IS&S products
Dave Elsworth
@richrebajr @ernestoldiaz In the same way CSC is not aligned to one technology we are not aligned to one "Source". @CSC can bring great IP from our industry software or opensource to our customers with a service wrapper.
Ernesto Diaz
@richrebajr Correct, for instance... open source toolset to implement DevOps for continuous deployment.
Andy Booth
@richrebajr Agreed. And it will be even better if we also contribute back to the open source tooling.
Rick Wilhelm
A shout-out to @kroonwijk for being being first on the CSC green list!
Dave Elsworth
Great work @kroonwijk on being on the CSC open source approved green list.
Chris Fangmann
A great motivation for everybody to GET INVOLVED!
Soren Helsted
@ChrisFangmann Open Sourcing vs using Open Source in IP. Open Sourcing you still own and even gain IP
Rick Wilhelm
@tjmcs1 : Software is a service industry operating under the delusion that it's a manufacturing industry. #opensource accelerates to push to service
Rich Reba
Love that CSC has its own Youtube channel. Thanks Tom for helping us launch the Soundbite series - thanks also to Paul, Helen, Hayley, Lisa, Heather, Mike, Sharon, Susan, and anyone else involved in getting this series launched and off the ground FAST !
Soren Helsted
Thats the transformed CSC in a nutshell!
Chris Fangmann
It's just great we're really embracing all communication channels - let's motivate more @CSCers
Lisa Braun
Fast and light! Some fail fast too, to learn.
Paul
and didn't even feel like seat-of-the-pants either! Looking forwards to lots more events
Heather Simpson 🌈🍃
Go Team @CSC! Thanks for joining & contributing to the #csctechtalk #opensource convo! And thanks to our host @phowarth001 & speaker @tjmcs1!
Chris Fangmann
it's been a great presentation, explanation and discussion
Chris Fangmann
and also: great participation when considering world cup
Soren Helsted
love the enthusiasm from a lot of people in the organisation that open source is being promoted the way it is now
Soren Helsted
@ChrisFangmann world cup, what world cup?
Chris Fangmann
That other thing live today - not as important as this here of course :-)
Soren Helsted
@ChrisFangmann the stuff thats going on in Brazil ;-)
Lisa Braun
I like the fact that there are many ways to participate in #opensource beyond coding: writing documentation, answering questions, presenting, etc. Opens the doors to more. #csctechtalk
Thomas Baus
which is very good since @CSC has many folks not being able to deliver code but being interested in contributing to this initiative!
Chris Fangmann
right - it's not limited to coding, also include architecture, engineering...no limits
Soren Helsted
its a real cross-functional community work
Juan Blanco
Should every project (common framework) start as a potential open source, so we can share the code across CSC and then evaluated to be release to the community?
Chris Fangmann
Are you just defining a "CSC-OS"?
Chris Fangmann
Then I'd say we should apply the OpenSource principles in a closed environment, i.e. within @CSC
Soren Helsted
an internal GibHub for all our projects
Chris Fangmann
@sorenhelsted Yes - see the question posted below
James Szczygiel
I like the idea of "crowd source" within CSC on #GitHub and if appropriate go open source as well
Chris Fangmann
@jszczygi OK - suggest you and Juan reach out to Tom to support the OCTO to get this started
Juan Blanco
Correct but with less "red tape" to encourage involvement. find duplication, it could start something as simple as github hosted internallya
Ernesto Diaz
Yes, bu deserves special attention to framework/version lock and the scalability of the code you implement on top of it.
Rick Wilhelm
@sorenhelsted We have a BitBucket (cloud-based) that can provide broad internal visibility and easy collaboration.
Tom McSweeney
we've actually been discussing with Rick the concept of a "crowdsourced" application, and there is already at least one of those under our CSC GitHub organization...the re-TES application
Chris Fangmann
@tjmcs1 Yes, re-TES is a fantastic example we can build on
Juan Blanco
CSC GitHub organisation is that Github enterpise?
James Szczygiel
@ChrisFangmann @tjmcs1 Yes and I'd like AccountView to be number 2 following reTES example per our conversation TechCom:-)
Chris Fangmann
You got my attention and support :-)
Tom McSweeney
@ChrisFangmann @jszczygi we'll be talking about that next week (AccountView)
