2022 DevOps Trends
Industry experts gather to discuss key DevOps Trends in 2022 including GitOps, SaaS, VSM, Security and more.
Opsera
What trends or predictions do you see taking shape for Value Stream Management and Delivery in 2022?
Vishnu Vasudevan
Continue to solve product life cycle by having Value stream orchestration platform.
Garima Bajpai
Combining (Value)+ (Stream) + (Management) with Data Science
Dr. G
Reducing friction along the path to flowing business value through the organization. Empowering people, reducing manual toil
Salesforce Devops
For Salesforce, this is badly needed but more education is badly needed about how to manage governance better
Derek Ross
Education is a great point. Many companies, especially in the SaaS platforms are buying the tools but don't have the education/skill sets to implement the processes and practices the tools support.
Garima Bajpai
Twinning VSM with DevOps & DataOps
Kumar Chivukula
value stream management is essential for companies to measure the agility, velocity and end-to-end software delivery management. VSM will become an integral part of the digital transformation in 2022.
Dr. G
Improving the quality of life of people is going to be a primary driver for all the #devops trends
Garima Bajpai
is VSM only fits in for enterprise-grade ?
Sucheta
A platform enabling value beyond providing a one-off solution - Single source of truth, Insights/Observability, Audits, Security, Catalog
Kumar Chivukula
Value stream management will help identify the bottlenecks in the software delivery process and help companies to tie the investments with the core objectives and goals.
Kevin Railsback
Broader visibility across the company is a key factor in allowing companies to scale without drastically increasing costs and avoiding bottlenecks
Mauerbauertraurigkeit 3x+1
It's worth noting that education on the value of VSM must include the executives that will fund the solutions to the problems discovered in the VSM.

SaaS has been booming the past several years (Salesforce, Snowflake, AEM, etc.) - what's in store for SaaS application release automation or SaaS DevOps this year?
Dr. G
More #nocode #lowcode solutions to simplify release automation and reduce complexity
Vishnu Vasudevan
Build vs Buy, SaaS is going to be the next big thing in the industry. People are moving to buy vs build so that they can focus on the product development rather building a function/feature which is not their core.
Salesforce Devops
It seems like customers are starting to ask for this capability for more SaaS systems
Kumar Chivukula
Most of the enterprises are moving to SaaS and SaaS DevOps is very critical as it is not easy for companies to manage the release management across multiple SaaS apps using point solutions. No-code pipelines and SaaS DevOps orchestration is essential #Opsera no-code #SaaS DevOps

(edited)

Garima Bajpai
#nocode platforms , bring your own devops feature integrated seamlessly
Kevin Railsback
I think the challenge here is in finding the right solutions to allow for integrations between the various SaaS platforms. Key here is understanding how to keep the toolchain simple and secure when it spans multiple disparate platforms while maintaining visibility
Garima Bajpai
data services for SaaS
Salesforce Devops
I believe one trend is driving this is more and more business users with low-code tools

Automation, Velocity and Observability

AIOps - just another buzzword or something that will make a real business impact?
Dr. G
There are some areas where #AIOps can benefit - especially in high velocity high risk environments
Garima Bajpai
human in the loop
Kumar Chivukula
If done right AIOps can offer significant benefits to the enterprises. Identify use cases and find a solution to solve the use case as opposed to adopt a solution and find the use cases to leverage AIOps
Vishnu Vasudevan
AIOps is a overhead if its not implemented for the right use case. It cannot be implemented just because some one likes the term "artificial intelligence" :)
Vishnu Vasudevan
AIOps should be "actionable intelligence" than artificial intelligence. If there is no actionable outcome then AIOps can be a painful process to manage it.
Kevin Railsback
Everyone wants AI as a buzzword, but in reality you typically end up with Artificial Incompetence rather than Intelligence. Hopefully for the future of AIOps, but I don't think we're close there yet.
Garima Bajpai
get prepared for the new workforce -bots, autonomous platform .. it also produces data not only consuming it
Kevin Railsback
@vishnube Great way of framing this. 100% agreed.
Derek Ross
Any technical strategy being implemented around AI as a primary driver of value will detract rather than contribute to quality and velocity. Focus on education in the tools you have to implement your delivery goals.
Dr. G
The goal of #AIOps should not be to eliminate the human but to collaborate with them
Sucheta
Iis all about data and data based recommendations

Why is the GitOps model taking off? How do you see GitOps coming more into play in 2022?
John Bristowe
text > configs via ui
Kumar Chivukula
GitOps model is to enable developers and engineers to deploy cloud native apps effectively and efficiently. Works well for K8 and Cloud native apps.
Salesforce Devops
For me, it is a sulfurous moniker. I think we already do this if you are committed to branch based development
Vishnu Vasudevan
Gitops will play a huge role especially with cloud move by enterprises and SMB's. Opsera' no code platform offers native integration 2 GitOps to help customers to have their process laid out in mins. This gives two benefits, one developer empowerment & compliance reqs.
Vishnu Vasudevan
Config as a code via GitOps.
Dr. G
We've been doing this for years. #GitOps makes us follow best practices for cloudnative and K8s dev
Kevin Railsback
The GitOps term is newer, but this is something that has been in practice for some time. I think the key here is making sure the development team is empowered by the process that is implemented, so that they are core participants in the DevOps culture
Mauerbauertraurigkeit 3x+1
@opseraio. GitOps is my favorite new marketecture term
Opsera
What will shift-left quality and security look like in 2022? Is "Shift-left" the right way to think about it?
Garima Bajpai
Shift-left not only security
Kumar Chivukula
security in the software supply chain is very critical and companies have to automate the security gates (SAST, DAST, TVM, Container scanning, vault etc) and embrace DevSecOps and security by design #Opsera #DevOps #DevSecOps
Vishnu Vasudevan
Shift left needs to be baked in 2022 especially with enterprises moving to cloud native. Current security team needs to be part of dev team so that they can help dev team build features with security and quality baked in.
Vishnu Vasudevan
Dev teams should see the shift left as an opportunity as oppose to see this as a hurdle to velocity.
Dr. G
Shift-left is definitely the right way IMO. In 2022, I feel the trend will be to automate security in every action and reduce the barrier to entry for securing, apps, containers, and products. Security becomes a true first class citizen
Garima Bajpai
be prepared - as a service / as a platform
Salesforce Devops
Shift left is good only if the developers don't feel like the work has shifted left too. Developers need "shift left" tools that empower them with advanced technologies that are easy to use.
Sucheta
Security has become the central core of any software development practice in the last few years. It is no longer an afterthought. This hybrid environment(cloud/on-premise) requires a proactive approach to bring security to early stages in software development
Garima Bajpai
battle- out for the blackOps & Ransomeware as a service :-)
