IDC Asia/Pacific
Let's move on to the 2nd prediction.
Avneesh Saxena
More than 75% of enterprise #IT orgs will commit to #multicloud architectures by 2018. What’s driving this adoption?
Daphne
There is no 1-size-fits-all #cloud approach. As adoption matures, customer needs & demands grow more sophisticated, leading to #multicloud adoption of cloud solutions driven by workload requirements.
William Lee
#Multicloud also means end user orgs can avoid the pain of migrating legacy apps to a new platform.
William Lee
Those who opt for Multicloud avoid vendor lock-in and create redundancies for their workloads.
Avneesh Saxena
The advantages of #multicloud are certainly compelling. Why isn’t #APAC onboard yet?
Prabhitha
#APAC still has a lot of growing up to do in terms of #cloud adoption.
Prabhitha
Over 82% of surveyed orgs in #APAC are in the 2 earliest stages of our #Cloud MaturityScape, indicating that most orgs are still in the process of surviving cloud, rather than thriving in it.
vikas_bhandari
The landscape however is changing w/ a lot of new players especially from #APAC that understand the legal/technical issues in this part of the world.
vikas_bhandari
These would include the likes of #Alicloud, #tencent #Cloud, #BaiduCloud, & the entry of @awscloud to markets like #China.
Daphne
That’s right. The #cloud tide will turn for #APAC in #2018, & w/ the factors I mentioned earlier, the need for #Multicloud will be fuelled by the implementation of #IoT & industry clouds.
William Lee
#IoT is abt having connected endpoint devices capturing real-time #data that are sent back for storage & computation on multiple supporting #cloud platforms.
William Lee
With the increased efficiency & accuracy of #data collection from #IoT, timely actionable insights can be derived through the applications of #bigdata #analytics across this #Multicloud environment.
vikas_bhandari
Multicloud doesn’t just mean different providers & platforms, it can also be the same provider/platform but in a different region.
vikas_bhandari
for example @AWScloud & @Azure are technically the same inside & outside #China, but #AWS China complies w/ Chinese regulations & operates slightly differently
vikas_bhandari
At #Hanas, when working w/ 1 of our vendors, we needed to check & ensure that the #cloud sol’n was really the same. We are currently working w/ 1 of our vendors in a situation where a production application has to be migrated to a Chinese Cloud.
Avneesh Saxena
The benefits of #multicloud is clear, but those who are looking to adopt it must expect some challenges along the way. As @vikas_bhandari shared, data location is a consideration that might inhibit #multicloud adoption.
IDC Asia/Pacific
Everyone -- feel free to sound off & share some of your inputs too! Don’t forget to upvote your favorite responses throughout this tweetchat.
Prabhitha
To recap everyone’s points: #data location is a consideration. So is #compliance w/ corporate governance & legislative reqts. What’s your advice to end users on their path towards #multicloud?
Daphne
Choose enterprise architecture that defines available #APIs. Adopting a #DevOps approach to application lifecycle mgmt is key.
Daphne
Also it’s impt to assess #data mgmt & #security practices for the ability to manage the sourcing of data & services from external providers.
William Lee
w/ non-IT buyers playing a big role in choosing #multicloud solutions, LoB mgmt must be educated on the importance of enterprise architecture & the cost implication of noncompliance w/ architecture.
John Furrier
@vikas_bhandari mulit-cloud is table stakes the issue will be latency imho; but if not shared workloads then ok
William Lee
The #IT department must also take the lead in teaching #LoBs on how they can engage w/ the IT group to make use of different #cloud services.
IDC Asia/Pacific
We might run a little past 2:30 pm, but that's alright! Valuable opportunity for a compelling conversation w/ our analysts.
Prabhitha
Any more from your side, @vikas_bhandari?
vikas_bhandari
#Multicloud adoption will make the cost of #IT #services more abstract, making trad’l annual budget mgmt soon inadequate.
John Furrier
I think that #IoT in APAC is big bc of all the smart mobility & cities initiatives; plus lots of industrial IoT too
vikas_bhandari
New models of payment for services tied to business outcomes must be agreed with the CIO.
vikas_bhandari
While we encourage & work w/ our LoBs in acquiring services, #IT has to stay engaged as we still have responsibility to ensure data flows to/from the sol’n that an #LoB selects.
vikas_bhandari
#IT must help ensure that #LoBs don’t end up becoming #data islands.
Daphne
@furrier Brings to the forefront the need for cloud management!

@avesax 1/ SaaS; 2/ "Horses for Courses"
IDC Asia/Pacific
Let’s jump to our 1st prediction. All #IDCFutureScapes docs have 10 predictions, but we’ll focus on 3 for this tweetchat.
Avneesh Saxena
The no. of industry collaborative #clouds (or #ICC) will triple from 50 in #2018 to more than 150 by #2020, exceeding 250 exabytes of #data by the end of 2018.
Daphne
The number might seem small but bear in mind, that by #ICC, we mean multiple companies from the same industry will collaborate toward a common goal, through a #cloud-based services platform.
William Lee
The rapid growth of these #ICC will also supports the shared objective of improving enterprise-wide & industry-wide insight & capability. Think commoditizing #data & offering it as a service.
Daphne
There are 3 devt models for #ICC: the 1st is where an org opens up its expertise on the #cloud which others can access via subscription.
Daphne
In this 1st model, the end user creating the #ICC opens a new revenue stream for itself. The end user become an SP by consuming & delivering industry-based services.
William Lee
The 2nd devt model is where a vendor creates a #cloud platform for a specific industry.
William Lee
Meanwhile, the 3rd model is a partnership between user organizations & 1 or more #technology vendor/s.
John Furrier
Will #ICC be multi-cloud who orchestrates the workloads?
Daphne
With the 2nd & 3rd devt models, the situation is a win-win. Multiple parties can benefit from shared proprietary data on the #cloud. No need to reinvent the wheel, is a good thing!
William Lee
@furrier #ICC will be on a specific industry cloud platform where the service providers manages the workloads
vikas_bhandari
In my organization, #ICC is setup by vendors such as @Vestas & Siemens as well as more generic #IoT-type industrial information clouds such as the one setup by @generalelectric.
vikas_bhandari
I see this kind of model really working in the #Utilities space & other industries w/ large complex datasets
Daphne
Worldwide, it’s the #healthcare industry that’s leading the way with industry collaborative #cloud. In #AsiaPacific, it’s #banking, healthcare & #manufacturing leading #ICC adoption.
Prabhitha
Can you give examples of saleable data across various markets that can & will be shared via these ICCs?
Daphne
Sure. Off the top of my head: electronic #health records & health #analytics.
Avneesh Saxena
w/ #ICC, access to collaborative industry #data will pave the way for disruptive players to join in.
vikas_bhandari
It’s the very definition of #DX. End user orgs are able to digitally transform themselves by finding new ways to operate & new revenue streams.
vikas_bhandari
Ultimately, the org’s customers will be the main beneficiaries. #ICC will bring to the fore more outcome-based services as the use of #data #analytics on #ICCs becomes more consistent.
Prabhitha
So #analytics will definitely play a critical role since huge amounts of #data must be generated, processed & securely managed
IDC Asia/Pacific
Chiming in on a slightly unrelated note: our tweetfchat is still in progress, just refresh the page if responses seem to have frozen.
vikas_bhandari
Absolutely. But when it comes to the impact of industry #clouds, what’s striking for me is changes in sourcing. Industry domain experts from LOBs will start sourcing on behalf of #IT.
vikas_bhandari
This is already happening w/in my own org, #Hanas. I actively support our Wind Power Operations to work w/ their vendor in selecting the right sol’n not only in terms of technical specs.
vikas_bhandari
The sol’ns I help them source must also comply w/ all the regulatory requirements that #Hanas is bound to comply w/ in a strategic industry like power generation.
Prabhitha
Any tips/insights for end users re: #ICCs?
Daphne
Orgs who want in on #ICCs should explore opps to help migrate & commercialize the massive amount of potential #data that has not yet been moved to the #cloud, including in mature markets.
William Lee
You should also look for vendors that have deep industry expertise and a strong book of references.
William Lee
Proven understanding of industry-specific regulations & compliance initiatives & a portfolio of previously-built industry clouds are also important.
Daphne
And collaboration/JV strategy is often critical to a successful strategy here.
Prabhitha
To sum up everyone’s inputs: alliances & partnerships for #ICCs will be critical for success. Knowledge of specific industries will be valued highly
IDC Asia/Pacific
How about our participants/viewers? Does anyone have anything to add about industry collaborative #cloud?
IDC Asia/Pacific
Which #ICC model does everyone think will take off the most in AP?
