Q2:: How have you experienced gender bias?
Magical Maya
Oof! In everything that I do. Here comes someone always reminding me how I am a little lady.
Laurel Dickman
Q2 I experience sexism and misogyny every day, reminded of what I "can" and "cannot" do by outside forces.
Suma Jane
As a femme who has PCOS, it can be really hard to feel seen. Some of my PCOS symptoms make femmes think I'm not femme enough, and non-femmes don't always read me correctly.
Monica Lynn
Q2. When I am told I am being sensitive, or 'too emotional' in arguments. When men think it's okay to make unwanted sexual advances. As I walk on the street..Daily.
Ema Grey
People don't always take me/my authority seriously in professional situations
Chelle
Q2 Every day I (a cis-femme) am treated as "less than." On one-on-one levels personally but more so through media and advertising. Even though it isn't always said, the under-current is ALWAYS there.
Ravneet Vohra
all over the f-ing place -esp as an indian female entrepreneur, doesn't matter how successful you are this is not success by indian standards - this is neglecting your responsibilities as an indian woman, wife, mother and daughter in law.
Ema Grey
Even tho I mnge employees at wrk, im uncmftble 2 tell ppl wht 2 do bc i dont wanna b"bossy"
Suma Jane
@ema_grey Totally! I have to fight to be taken seriously on set a lot.
Chelle
@ema_grey OMG THIS! I often don't say what I feel or what needs to be said because I know I will either not be taken seriously or that I'm a "b@$%#" and should just "calm down."
Laurel Dickman
I feel closer to femme-identified ppl than women-identified ppl. I'm in a hetero-normative relationship and it is used against me to erase my ID.
Chelle
A2: One of the biggest things I get is with my car. I go into a shop and 98% of the time will get talked down to, told I don't know anything, or looked past to my husband instead of me even though I'm more versed in mechanics than he is.
Ema Grey
@serynade totallyyy I always get not taken srsly doing "masculine" things or things that require strength... I worked at a kayak shop for 6 years and would always have renters doubt my ability to teach them abt the sport
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
Q1: What does gender mean to you? How do you define gender in relation to yourself?
Ema Grey
Gender, to me, is expression!
Monica Lynn
.@WearYourVoice to me, gender is a social construct traditionally based in evolution that is increasingly becoming obsolete. A way to group folks
Laurel Dickman
A1 Gender is optional. Gender is fluid. Gender is evolving beyond the binary.
Suma Jane
Gender, to me, is just how I signal to other people how I'm locating myself at the moment in a world of options.
Magical Maya
gender is label!
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
@suma_jane_dark Yes!! Gender is so often the first signal between two people of their relative social "location" I love that description
Chelle
#WYVchat A1: Gender is very hard to define for me. It's a form of expression but also a societal tool separate and to oppress.
Ravneet Vohra
A1 Gender for me as @Monica Lynn said, is exactly how I feel about gender.
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
@serynade The value of gender as an oppressor is really important to remember, esp historically
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
Q3: How do you feel traditionally gendered spaces can be more inclusive? (i.e. bathrooms, locker rooms, etc)
Laurel Dickman
A3 Abolish the gender binary. It doesn't need to be male/female. Unisex bathrooms are just fine by me. #wyvchat
Chelle
A3: Pursuing ideals while navigating reality is so very difficult, but having more than two options for things like restrooms, locker rooms and forms on questionnaires, legal documents etc. is a start. More safe spaces.
Ravneet Vohra
by providing more options - we should not have to choose to identify as one gender anymore...we should ID as we choose...how we feel
Ema Grey
gender identity needs to always be priorituxzed
Ravneet Vohra
@laureldickman I am not comfortable with unisex bathrooms at all.
Maria Montserrat
http://www.thelocal.... yes more unisex bathrooms ARE important to protect minorities but even in Scandinavia there's not enough urgency to change it. BART is actually remodeling atm, it's a good time to ask for just that! Typical SF bay area move :D
Ema Grey
@RavneetVohra @laureldickman Unisex bathrooms are a good way to circumvent issues of "choosing" fr nonbinary folx but a lot of ppl arent comfortable w the idea of sharing bathrooms etc w cis men
Ema Grey
@laureldickman @RavneetVohra I feel like the biggest problem here is cis men but that's also me being a misandrist and oversimplifying A LOT
Suma Jane
I think adding a third gender option to all facilities that is gender neutral will give many more people the chance to be comfortable.
Ema Grey
@suma_jane_dark Yeah! that way ppl can choose. the biggest issue i see there is one of space? but also like... a small price to pay for feeling safe
WEARYOURVOICEMAG

Q4: What are your thoughts about gender in the media?
Chelle
A4: I could write books about this... So much media fuels the biases and soc. separations of gender. Fem.=weak, emotional, housewife, sexualized. Male=strong, non emotional, sole provider. NB = weird, freak, outcast. It damages all.
Laurel Dickman
A4 It's getting better, slowly. Trans folks are being seen slightly more often, and in those instances less often the butt of jokes but ppl still get away with it. #wyvchat
Laurel Dickman
A4 Non-binary folks are still less visible, as are trans BIPOC femmes and women. Also, if a person is less "passable," they are less likely to see representation. We are still pushing colonial beauty ideals.
Ravneet Vohra
A4: it's very slow, we are still being placed into traditional roles. I find myself consistenly cringing at the crap they show our kids on TV, and stepping in to remind my kids that it does not need to be like *this* or *that*.
Chelle
@laureldickman Unfortunately, often when I see trans folks in media, it's in a capacity of making a mockery of them or using them as 'sensational' headline to sell papers etc.
Laurel Dickman
@serynade Totally agree. We try to be super conscious of that at WYV>
Suma Jane
@RavneetVohra I always worry about when if/when I have kids, how the media will try to enforce all kinds of harmful gender messaging. Good for you, trying to combat that!
