#wyvchatSAAM Day of ActionToday we're talking about sexual violence, consent and how to de-program a society of predators

Q3. Another hot topic 2day is #staystrongkehlani, showing support 4 the singer who was slutshamed yesterday & reportedly attempted suicide. This is just 1 more example of the way online bullying has real world consequences. How can we mediate this?
Ema Grey
Online it is really easy to forget that there are real people on the other sides of this web
Magical Maya
Idk what to say. All I can say is people have lame perceptions of everything. The young lady is 20. Leave her alone?
Ema Grey
I think a lot of people dont realize that their one rude post becomes part of a vast sea of rude posts that can be consuming and overwhelming to the subject
Jacie Leopold
that is a good question there are no real consequences for online bullying. But we all know the outcome.
Miss Evelyn-Jo
A3 Don't mock / say asking for help is a weakness. Encourage. Listen. Love. Accept. Support. Stand up for others #WYVchat
Jacie Leopold
even reading one negative comment can be devistating.
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
It feels like negative comments are 1000% more devastating than positive comments are uplifting.... why do you think that is?
Jacie Leopold
@MissEvelynJo we need to lift each other up.
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
@MissEvelynJo accepting that it is okay to ask for help is SO important w/ bullying. its easy to feel like it's not "that bad" or that you dont "need" or "deserve" help... but thats not true
Miss Evelyn-Jo
@JacieLeopold people deserve to be treated with compassion, kindness and respect. Yes lift each other up! Not tear each other down. One negative comment can be more powerful than ten nice ones. #WYVchat
Jacie Leopold
misogyny on social media is hard to address. It is complicated in real life. And ingrained into people at an early age. Social media has only amplified it.
nicole gervacio
neg. comments being 1000% more devastating: the internet can be an anonymous/faceless place in some ways...but when you read someone's negative comment, YOU read it to yourself. it becomes much more personal than if someone says it to you...
nicole gervacio
continued:...it's easy to say 'don't take it personal' but anyone with feelings can be affected by negativity even if it's just typed through the internet...
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
Q2. @JacieLeopold brought up a good point re: social media- it is often used as a major platform for online abuse/bullying. However, it can also be a rallying point or safe place for victims. How do you guys reconcile that/ feel about this duplicity?
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
@missevelynjo brings up a good point: social media can be used to unite people who may not have support in their local community
Ema Grey
@JacieLeopold I want to believe that the support/safety given to so many people thru social media surpasses the harm caused by the ability of bullies to harness the global platform
Jacie Leopold
for me it has given me security to tell my story and so much support from all over the world
Jacie Leopold
I have also been able to reach out to others in similiar situations.
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
@JacieLeopold We're so glad that after your exp you chose to not forget it, but to speak up and connect with others and be a voice and advocate for the community. It is so appreciated.
Jacie Leopold
wr are all one.
Jacie Leopold
it is not just to repay the compassion I have recieved but it is the right thing to do.
nicole gervacio
it's intimidating to know there is a possibility people will bully/troll you through the internet, but it is reassuring every time i find people who show solidarity in things i believe in or causes i am fighting for...
nicole gervacio
one of the main reasons i decided to have an online voice is to stand up to the ignorance often spread across the internet, it can be a useful platform for shining light on issues and sharing information.
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
Solidarity seems to be one of the most important ways to fight bullying/find solace and compassion as a victim. This is one of the reasons WYV holds these chats, so that the community can come together and share in each others exp and hold each other up
Ema Grey
@nicolegervacio yes! Even w everything summed up, I feel that the compassion and solidarity experienced online is important and meaningful enough that the platform isnt ruined bc its so easy to spread hate (does that make sense???)
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
Q1. What is your experience with bullying? (Any kind: personal, political, systemic, violent)
Ema Grey
My largest exp with bullying has been in the workplace
Jacie Leopold
I have have worked with and people in the south who openly bully the lgbt community, I have been beaten, and politically new laws are introduced each day to deny the trans community our basic rights.
Magical Maya
everyday on planet earth someone is about to be all bullying me. I am so used to it. Friends and family! Strangers! People online! No way around it. Humanity is seriously embedded in the devout religion of bullying.
Ema Grey
I had a boss who constantly took advantage of my wanting to be a good employee, making me work 12hr shifts and making me feel like I could never say no
Jacie Leopold
social media has been a huge culprit in bullying me. And others.
Magical Maya
bullying is this forever wicked cloud I feel I have been stuck on. No way around it.
Ema Grey
also things like giving me a bandaid when I got a 3rd degree burn instead of letting me go to the hospital or yelling at me to calm down when i had a panic attack and almost had to call an ambulance
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
@JacieLeopold so much #antitrans and #antilgbt legislation recently is basically bullying in disguise
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
@JacieLeopold Or if not in disguise, on a more massive scale
Ema Grey
@YOMayaSongbird ugh I feel that "wicked cloud" thing. How do you deal withthat? How do you make an umbrella?
Jacie Leopold
statistically it has been proven to be a cause for suicide amongst youth in the LGBT Community
Ema Grey
@JacieLeopold I just don't understand how these statistics are proven but still ignored by policy makers?
Ema Grey
@JacieLeopold Like how is this okay how can these laws keep being written when they LITERALLY are proven to push youth to suicide?
Jacie Leopold
more specifically with the anti trans bathroom bills being passed it has even caused separation from some LGB and T
Magical Maya
@ema_grey my resolution is to draw new clouds that take me far away. I keep to myself and believe in my own truth. I know me best and I don't even fight back anymore. Silence is golden.
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
@JacieLeopold YES that is very important!! It seems that people often conflate LGBT into one homogenous group and ignore transphobia etc w/i the community
Jacie Leopold
@ema_grey they are playing a chess game with human rights to gain votes and supporters from the conservative right
Jacie Leopold
@YOMayaSongbird together we are one voice. Do not lose hope!
Ema Grey
@JacieLeopold @YOMayaSongbird I love the way social media can be used to speak with a "louder" voice bc so often when I speak alone i feel dorwned out by negativoty
Ema Grey
@JacieLeopold @YOMayaSongbird it's hard to speak up against systemic/political bullying when it feels like it is just you, shouting into the void
Jacie Leopold
@ema_grey I felt that way for so long. Until one day people started to listen to me. And offer to help.
Ema Grey
@JacieLeopold @WearYourVoice That's def my fav thing about the social media network, is how kind people can be about listening... I'm trying to feel less like I'm speaking to a void and these tweet chats are def helping
Jacie Leopold
@ema_grey sometimes even when there are thousands of us. It feels like they can. ot hear us.
Jacie Leopold
@ema_gray sorry for typos I am on my phone
Ema Grey
@JacieLeopold ahaha np ;) Im not on my phone but am still a Typo Queen so...
Ema Grey
@YOMayaSongbird I love that phrase "believe in my own truth" I feel like it applies on so many levels <3
nicole gervacio
i've experienced personal bullying, in regards to my ethnicity (or incorrect assumptions of my ethnicity) + gender
