WEARYOURVOICEMAG
Q4 What are yr feelings on censorship?
Laurel Dickman
It's a parents' job to figure out what they want to expose their children to, but NEVER the job of the gov to choose for adults. #wyvchat #censorship
Meg Thompson
I'm not sure if a government can responsibly censor, but I do think there should be limits on hate speech. Because why do we need or want hate speech?
Laurel Dickman
@NorthwestMegs I 100% agree that I have no value for hate speech, but I worry about the "slippery slope" of the gov getting involved in what ppl can say.
Antwan LaMar Herron
Morrison's "The Bluest Eye" is has been facing censorship problems recently.
Laurel Dickman
@NorthwestMegs Once that starts to happen, I wonder what can be misconstrued as such in order to advance their agenda.
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
What about Mein Kampf? Thats one of the most obvious examples i can think of of government censoring due to hate speech.
Antwan LaMar Herron
Who benefits from censorship?
Meg Thompson
@laureldickman Completely agree! That's why in theory I'd like hate speech to be censored. But howwwww do you responsibly censor? Who is in charge? Because erm, our mainly white-male gov isn't the best candidate
Antwan LaMar Herron
I'm not sure if my psyche can make it out of "Mein Kampf" intact.
Laurel Dickman
I worry that when you say something is forbidden, people will place higher value on it and try harder to access it.
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
What do you all think of the idea that censoring books only makes them more desired? That by censoring the government tells the public what they don't want it to read and inspires them to read?
Antwan LaMar Herron
Also, what are the learning circumstances for teaching a book as controversial and inflammatory as MK?
Suma Jane
Never acceptable. The public should repudiate hate speech and foster an environment where it is unacceptable. The gov should never be involved.
Miss Evelyn-Jo
censorship was more of a big deal when I was a teen (17 years ago) now you can instantly have access to anything / everything online. Censorship should start with parental responsibility
Ema Grey
Censorship shouldn t be a gov issue, i ;like the idea that we can count on people to be decent and thoughtful in what info the dissemination of touchy info...... but i might b giving ppl too much credit idk
Meg Thompson
Great example. I also wrote a term paper about Canada's censorship to hate speech a few years ago - need to check in to see how it's working for them
Meg Thompson
@ema_grey This was definitely my perspective until, erm, the recent primary election. Lost all faith in humans.
Suma Jane
@AntwanLHerron I think we need to completely transform how history is taught, and really encourage young people to have critical interactions with source documents, etc. It might help people to recognize similar patterns of thought in figures today.
Antwan LaMar Herron
@suma_jane_dark Definitely. We need to do a better job of appreciating history. I'd go so far as to say that nothing is possible without a historical foundation.
WEARYOURVOICEMAG
Q2. How have books introduced you to issues of feminism, queerness or identity? Do you feel there are any in particular that shaped yr perspective or growth?
Laurel Dickman
Sexual Power by Carolyn Johnson, my godmother, really influenced me. My parents made me read it when I was in middle school.
Laurel Dickman
Also Sassy magazine, while not high end lit, played a MAJOR role in shaping me. My babysitter went on to write for them. I had a subscription from 8 yrs old to its demise.
Antwan LaMar Herron
I'm thinking of Patricia Hills Collins's classic "Black Feminist Thought" which I read as a graduate student
Suma Jane
My mom got me 'Wake Up I'm Fat' by Camryn Manheim when I was 13 and it was my introduction to fat as a political issue. Unbearable Weight by Susan Bordo; Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federicci; Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde; Marx (lol).
nicole gervacio
did anyone else read 'The Female Brain'? i couldn't even get halfway through...https://www.goodread...
lovemotionstory
I read Summer People when I was a teen and only realized rereading it at 32 that it was introduced me to the concept of non monogamy and validated my queerness at a crucial time of development..
Ema Grey
technically "Cunt a declaration of independence"
lovemotionstory
@nicolegervacio Hahaha, I never tried to read The Female Brain. Misogyny in science #forthefail...
Ema Grey
Also all of eva ibbotsons books, even tho they aren't books "written to be feminist" (whatever that means) they were incredibly formative for me and my baby feminist views
Antwan LaMar Herron
My great-grandmother encouraged me to read as many books as possible. But, as far I recall, she didn't identify as a feminist.
Ema Grey
@AntwanLHerron ughhhh black feminist thought is one of my favorites and a huge inspiration to the focus of my planned graduate resource
Antwan LaMar Herron
I also love Audre Lorde's book of essays, "Sister Citizen."
Laurel Dickman
Audre Lorde and bell hooks were introduced to me in my mid 20s, when I started learning what intersectionality really was.
Meg Thompson
In high school I read an essay by Judith Ortiz Cofer that opened my eyes to intersectional feminism and the issues that WOC face that white women don't. That was my "feminist awakening" so to speak
Ema Grey
Ooo, also it's not technically a "novel" but the The Combahee River Collective Statement
lovemotionstory
I also felt reading Woman on the Edge of Time (the first book I actually read by Marge Piercy) taught me a lot about how women aren't believed and how generational relationships with other women are so important...
Ema Grey
http://circuitous.or... it's short but everyone should read it
Ema Grey
also omg TAMORA PIERCE
Miss Evelyn-Jo
@AntwanLHerron yep to being encouraged to read too. Always had a book in my hand!
Antwan LaMar Herron
@ema_grey Have you dipped into Collins's work yet?
nicole gervacio
@lovemotionstory what's terrible is i SWEAR a teacher recommended it and that's why i event tried to read it!
lovemotionstory
@NorthwestMegs Do you remember the name of the essay? Sounds good...
nicole gervacio
@lovemotionstory i suppose it taught me...that just because something is published it's not necessarily a reliable source... :)
Ema Grey
@tamorapierce 's books were sooooo important for me as a preteen/teen/post teen re: feminist power
Antwan LaMar Herron
@ema_grey "Cunt: A Declaration of Independence"? ... The title alone has me piqued.
lovemotionstory
@laureldickman I wish I had read Lorde when I was a teen! #wyvchat
Ema Grey
@NorthwestMegs dude for reallll i think its incredibly vital that we are introduced to these perspectives early, because it can be easy to not realize that our experience is not universal-- i feel like this all comes back to acknowledging priveledge
Ema Grey
@AntwanLHerron It's a great read, if nothing else its a detailed history of the term and how it "rose to power" if you will
Meg Thompson
@lovemotionstory I *think* it was "Don't call me a hot tamale" but I'm not 100% sure. Really surprised & thankful my hella white suburban school had us read it.
