#StrataHadoopStrataHadoop BigData ChatBuncha Cool People Talking Big Data at Strata
Jim McHugh
So how important is data security?
John Furrier
. @JimMcHugh #1 issue not being talked about here
Rex Backman
Big - it is part of the governance conversation. HIPAA, PII, financial privacy regulations, etc. Its part of the deal.
Rex Backman
I think security goes hand in hand with data quality. HUGE as the Donald would say...
Rob Rosen
It's key to unlocking the next wave of use case adoption. There are many many financial services-focused use cases that would benefit hugely (read "compliance monitoring") that require security to enable
John Furrier
@RexBackman Yes security is HUUUUGGGE
Ali Bajwa
With all the recent hacks in the news, its definitely important. The way to avoid missing something is to have a single pane of view of security across all the stack. See recent HWX white paper: http://hortonworks.c...
Wissam Ali-Ahmad
very important ! #splunk 6.3 ships with data integrity checks at scale.
Friea Berg
security is critical - which is why many CISOs trust Splunk. Nice write-up on audit features, encryption, role-based access, etc. here: http://docs.splunk.c...
Jason Schroedl
@RexBackman @JimMchugh yep - govenance and data security are key issues as #Hadoop in the enterprise continues to extend beyond initial use cases to production deployment
George Demarest
the age old dilemma: huge for IT, a nuisance for developers. Security at scale is a major headache, and a lack of a central security model/service in Hadoop that new execution engines can subscribe to is yet another market oppty. early days
Anant Chintamaneni
So important that someone needs to ask how the #Hadoop security interoperates with existing enterprise security. Seems like the community diverging on this one. Thoughts?
Ali Bajwa
HWX is also helping foster community around OpenSOC to rapidly detect and respond to advanced security threats: http://hortonworks.c...
John Furrier
Question for buncha smart people: how do companies differentiate when #hadoop is being commoditized?
Robert Novak
Scalability, management, and performance, as well as being able to communicate use cases and ways to make benefits come out of the often-formidable investment in a timely manner.
John Furrier
Also what about "machine learning" washing.. how do you tell which vendor has the "real deal"?
Jim McHugh
integration for a full solution offering
Rex Backman
"Benefits" = Solving business problems. That is the key. Quicker to solve affords the company advantages in the market.
Robert Novak
I think a vendor who can bring a useful story to a customer showing how their tech will help the customer... is how you get through ML-washing and BD-washing and so forth. Infra and software solutions together make a big difference there.
Rob Rosen
Removing barriers to adoption will enable a win for everyone. That can be delivered through packaged services offerings, joint solutions with integrators and ISVs, proprietary components around the edge of the open core, or all of the above
Anant Chintamaneni
@furrier, it comes down who can iterate fast, develop and test new algorithms and generate business value. Canned machine learning algorithms rarely work out of box for the real problems.
Ali Bajwa
look for the guys with lots of committers ;) https://hadoop.apach...
George Demarest
the basic functions of Hadoop (data ingest, storage, mgmt) may be commoditizing, but the execution engines and programming models are still evolving rapidly and offer good chances to differentiate
Robert Novak
@abajwa_hdp Also look for the people with lots of technological differentiation and improvement. Number of committers isn't an independent metric :)
Anant Chintamaneni
By showcasing how enterprises of all sizes are generating value faster, with lower level of skills and cost than ever before. There is a lot of differentiation in the glue between the different ecosystem products.

Which statement is true and why:

Spark will supercharge Hadoop ecosystem
Spark will make Hadoop irrelevant
Spark is a band aid to something bigger
Spark is neutral and has no impact to Hadoop
Crowd Captain
Spark will turbo charge Hadoop ecosystem and make Hadoop invisible but relevant
Jim McHugh
for this year it's number 1
Rob Rosen
Agree with Jim here
Lisa Sensmeier
supercharge hadoop! many people are more excited about how they work together.
Rob Rosen
Perceptions of Spark rendering Hadoop obsolete seem off-base to me
Bharath Aleti
Invisible Hadoop is the panacea for a true unified data engine and Spark is leading the way to make it a realty
Robert Novak
Spark may make MapReduce less popular/critical, but remember, we still have companies making a living selling Usenet access. And people still use AIX and HP/UX in production :)
Renee Yao
Spark supercharges Hadoop, not replacing it. Spark could make MapReduce not as important. http://www.forbes.co...
Anant Chintamaneni
#ApacheSpark will supercharge the ever fluid Hadoop ecosystem, will make few of the ecosystem products irrelevant (it's been happening even before Spark), will unlock new analytics value from other products (e.g. noSQL). So true dat! to the top 3
Bharath Aleti
Big Data Analytics require a robust data store, capable of running different workloads. The underlying data infra running on Spark or MR, on a hardened, scalable & agile platform will be the key.
Robert Novak
I'm looking forward to seeing what Flink and some of the other new bits are going to do in the ecosystem.
Ali Bajwa
Spark will supercharge Hadoop ecosystem! As an example see how it integrates with hadoop components like: Hive, ORC and Phoenix http://hortonworks.c... https://gist.github....
Rob Rosen
Spark has really streamlined Platfora's data prep engine. We just released our 5.0 revision, which is Spark-driven - Spark enables more insight, earlier in the workflow. Better for end users, but MapReduce is still needed to do the heavy lifting
John Furrier
A great crowdsourced innovation flash mob happening here - amazing content from crowd
John Furrier
love open source model for content!!!
Friea Berg
Still wishing we were in person at a bar ...
Renee Yao
Gartner mentioned 41% of organizations don't know if #bigdata ROI will be positive or negative. Thoughts? http://www.via-cc.at...

John Furrier
this is why the vendor community needs more than hype - solutions with outcomes driving decisions
Rob Rosen
It's hard to accurately measure ROI on big data use cases. Solutions that are obviously strategic and/or clearly remove a huge chunk of cost are moving forward without formal ROIs
Rob Rosen
We held our annual Customer Advisory Board mtg yesterday. Astonishing breadth and depth of use cases on Platfora. All strategic, and no one (that I know of) has formally measured ROI post-deployment
Friea Berg
Yikes! Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) did a study of Splunk customers and consistently saw a return on investment of 200 percent or more in year #1 http://www.splunk.co...
Friea Berg
last week at #splunkconf end users from well over 100 organizations - @CiscoIT Target Sony MetLife FINRA TIAA-CREF Comcast & Bechtel to name a few - led sessions sharing use cases, business value & best practices https://conf.splunk....
Bharath Aleti

excited to join my first official #BigData Chat with @wissamaa ... live from New York, it's team Splunk!
Robert Novak
Welcome to NYC and Strata, Team @splunk. What's Splunk doing these days?
Friea Berg
Splunk & Cisco have taking our partnership to a new level - awesome 6.3 on #CiscoUCS performance benchmarks, a new CVD, joint solutions, new integrations & more.
Renee Yao
the recent benchmark results on #CiscoUCS was impressive ;) http://blogs.cisco.c...
Friea Berg
I'm a big fan of @JimMchugh's video on 6x performance with Splunk 6.3 on #CiscoUCS https://vimeo.com/13... .... @raghu_nambiar did a great job on @theCUBE too https://www.youtube....
John Furrier
Raghu nailed it on @theCUBE on his unified end to end story - Cisco has the edge secured :-)
Friea Berg
@furrier you have to admit my walk-on paparazzi role on @theCUBE made it that much more awesome ... ;)
Robert Novak
@wissamaa UP TO 6x search performance. :)
Robert Novak
That was definitely cool.
