EMC UK and Ireland
Welcome to today’s chat session on hybrid cloud catalysts with EMC and industry experts. http://www.via-cc.at...

Suhela Dighe
A special welcome to @ChristianMcM @ericdebray as our featured panelists and of course @dinkoeror & @hansemc, who will now kick off!
Steven Goddard
@hansEMC @dinkoeror @christianmcm @ericdebray & @suzyspaatz looking forward to view the catalyst for hybrid #cloud
Dinko Eror
Question 3: What skills do you think a perfect IT transformation A-team would need? http://www.via-cc.at...

Suhela Dighe
First of all, the IT A-team must be willing to adapt to the massive changes in the age of digital disruption.
Dave Shepherd
So I just love the image :-)
Carlo Daffara
Knowledge of the business. Visibility in "who benefits from". Knowledge of internal politics. Most adoption problems are not technical at all.
Christian McMahon
Its all about embracing, influencing and tackling change. Understand these elements and work together as a team with a consistent message
Dave Shepherd
In essence the Enterprise Architect is coming of age, the ability to understand business, data and technical aspects of a transformation couple with programme mgmt, scoping and migration skills is needed at a high-level
Hans Timmerman
Information Brokerage is also a basic make-or-buy decision. What can I buy? What do I need to make myself? What is the flexibility to move in and out . . .
Christian McMahon
Knowing where digital or other technologies will make a difference and help solve business critical issues
Suhela Dighe
@ChristianMcM That's a good one Christian! IT need to open to listening and adapting to business needs.
Witold Kepinski
think in architecture, not product
Hans Timmerman
And make-or-buy decisions are business decisions, just like any normal production process.
David Buffo
@OpenAlternative Yes, it's really more of a business architect than a technology architect
Dave Shepherd
@WitoldKepinski Absolutely - it is not about the product, but the solution or more correctly the business outcome
Hans Timmerman
A good architecture last for ever . . . Yes architectures are important to communicate.
Christian McMahon
Transformation is all about delivering the right change that will benefit everyone and deliver products/solutions/services that increase business growth
De Cloud Makelaar
@Shepherd @WitoldKepinski So now we (finally) acknowledge this, why are all the big vendors still selling products?
Hans Timmerman
Many CIO's I speak have the problem: what should be my first step . . . and get traction in my organisation.
Hans Timmerman
That's the support they ask for: take me by the hand . . .
De Cloud Makelaar
@ Timmerman "Listen, Learn & Deliver"
Witold Kepinski
look at the different kind of generations in a team. Young people are good in social business, senior professionals are good in people business & relations
Christian McMahon
You should be able to identify the major pain points or business critical issues in your organisation. Outside help may help prioritise or evolve solutions
Witold Kepinski
@DeCloudMakelaar Product is part of the solution. add value is in software and services
Dave Shepherd
@DeCloudMakelaar I think big vendors are leading with product, where they should really be leading with solutions - its historical ;-)
David Buffo
@hansemc Yes, so many things need to change from the traditional ways that it's not easy to see where to start
Witold Kepinski
@Decloudmakelaar you deliver a solution with permanent feedback of customers, prospects and big data information
De Cloud Makelaar
Shepherd Exactly!! and to predict the future, you have to learn from history ;-)
Hans Timmerman
I've been responsible decades ago for manufacturing automation. Solution was: start a new factory on a green field and later build down the old factories.
Hans Timmerman
I have 'deja vues' today with how we should renewing Datacenters.
Hans Timmerman
Let's have question 1: What key services do your lines of business most request?’
Christian McMahon
Common themes I see are ROI, quality of service and systems/services that solve/deliver answers to their critical issues
Victor Forde
Speed and flexibility of service delivery is one of the biggest challenges regardless of what they service is :)
De Cloud Makelaar
And Time to Market plus Uptime as a Service
Christian McMahon
Flexibility and agility are key
Dave Shepherd
Businesses are now looking to move critical business services to cloud models and #hybridcloud can help deliver this
Victor Forde
Achieving that flexibility means the service (and all its moving parts) are encapsulated for SD-X
Hans Timmerman
yes, it is just how we went with the hypervisor, we started with test/development and non-critical and after we were sure it was robust enough we brought productions services on VM's.
Carlo Daffara
but real cloud adoption require a change in sw development models for internal apps.
Carlo Daffara
it's not simply "let's move the VM to AWS", the economics is not there.
Dave Shepherd
the ability to understand business demand across multiple factors is key to understanding the placement of your applications across a #hybridcloud model
Hans Timmerman
HybridCloud use and new cloud native DevOps go hand in hand.
Suhela Dighe
We're coming to the final minutes: Can anybody share any hybrid cloud project case studies?
Suhela Dighe
I've extended the chat by 15 minutes. :)
Steven Goddard
there are some good videos and examples on http://www.emc.com/c...
Suhela Dighe
@DeCloudMakelaar Haha! I see you are enjoying this chat. :)
Victor Forde
That's the goal to bring our opportunities from undecided to motivated to Ready! :) #EMCElect
De Cloud Makelaar
@Goddard Steven, thanks for sharing
David Buffo
Interesting discussion last week with an electronics distributor: very low margin and longtime IBM shop. Now embarking on multimillion $ conversion of their app to Java from COBOL, for easier customization. Maybe not cloud, but disruptive!
Dave Shepherd
Ic cut my teeth in IT 25years ago as a COBOL programmer - maybe time to dust off the old skills ;-)
De Cloud Makelaar
So to wrap up @ #HybridCloudChat my main question to ask to your business partner is: "How Hybride is your Cloud?"
Hans Timmerman
Let's assume we have the Technology, Let’s talk about the process catalysts now! Q5: Do you see hybrid cloud as driving a new model of IT service delivery and support?
Hans Timmerman
The hybrid cloud is a facilitator for new cloud native applications.
Eric Debray
It is a process where IT is accepting not to develop everything but to keep the control
Eric Debray
IT According Forrester Hybrid cloud will be dominant in 2020
Christian McMahon
Yes I do. Fears of security and control policies aside, hybrid cloud adoption is gaining traction
Suhela Dighe
Internal IT is becoming less a reactive provider of technology but more a service broker between internal and external resources
Eric Debray
to be fast and flexible as requested by the market today , hybrid cloud will be mandatory
Dave Shepherd
Indeed IT departments will become brokers of IT whilst maintaing the relevant control and management required for their business
Hans Timmerman
Cloud etc is the New Normal. And when something is 'normal' you don't need specialists anymore to support you. That's why BYOD is growing so fast too . . you manage your own information services.
Dave Shepherd
@ericdebray indeed - the ability to deliver and meet demands moving for will require a #hybridcloud which in turn demands relevant policies and operating models to support it
Christian McMahon
The broker approach is growing as other areas understand technology better and how they can be served. IT should act as a broker but also as a guide, authority and aide
De Cloud Makelaar
Hybrid is not the "one size fits all" solution, and for the business owner this makes it all even more complicated then finding the right definition for: "The Cloud"
Eric Debray
I think we'll continue to need cloud specialist for a while until to have a full Cloud normalization
Hans Timmerman
Cloud is standardisation. Period. Based upon that standard we can run those services anywhere, inside, outside, managed etc.
Hans Timmerman
Cloud standard: virtual machines on a X86 architecture to power apps; like 230 V 50 Hz to power electrical devices.
David Buffo
Yes, standards is a big part of the IT culture-shift: instead of customizing all incoming requests, IT proactively needs to focus on delivering standard services that satisfy 80%
Dave Shepherd
but we need to be careful - the standardisation of the Infrastructure, Operating Systems and Management is fine - above that will lead to constricted business agility - the reason we are all here
Steven Goddard
Traditionally, IT operations are organized by technology “silos”, with few shared services spanning the technologies, and inconsistent tools, processes and policies across these technologies. How do you manage the transition? #hybridcloudchat
Witold Kepinski
Hybrid cloud will become a standard. On-premises business critical application still will dominate the business next coming years
Hans Timmerman
and don't forget on-premise business critical data . . .
David Buffo
@WitoldKepinski Yes, getting the timing right of these big shifts is always the trickiest part. Even virtualization, with a compelling and obvious business case, took almost 10 years to run its course
Dinko Eror
@tombitt Does Gartner have a view on IT-as-a-Service broker?
