UpskillingVSM

Aj Ajantha Godahewa
In DevOps VSM should the wastage always be correlated to a dollar figure?
DevOps Institute
and following up on this question, what is the best way to show your CTO the net value added? (* Man days figure, Dollar figure or Saved hours )
Marc Hornbeek, DevOps_the_Gray esq.
No. Dollars are the ultimate business outcome but it is preferred to use metrics that are leading indicators of business outcomes such as agility which leads revenue, efficiency leads costs, and user satisfaction can a leading indicator of business retention and growth.

Feisal Ismail
Ultimately, it is the main measurement business understands. It helps to correlate any other metrics in dollar-sense
Biswajit Mohapatra
No, it's both qualitative and quantitative value. Many times we tend to ignore qualitative measurements.
Romnick Acabado
This is just one of the best ways to talk to the business, connect with them and show value of the VSM approach. There are a lot more factors to be included in the metrics or KPIs.
RoseDyson
Absolutely not. I find that VSM can help make peoples jobs better, by removing boring tasks and delays. Leaving more time for people to do more interesting work.

No...often value can not be measured in dollars...look at #COVID19 as a fantastic example...success is measured in saving lives and keeping people healthy...#TheDigitalCoach
DevOps Institute
We all gain knowledge and understanding in many different ways. What methods or processes work best for you and why?
Romnick Acabado
I use the 70/20/10 learning principle, where I learn things by doing, connecting to experts and communities, and reading books/references.
Paul Colmer #DevOps πŸŽΈβ˜οΈπŸ›°οΈπŸš€πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί
Audible, YouTube, Blogging and Filming are great ways to understand, communicate and reenforce knowledge. #TheDigitalCoach
RoseDyson
Community collaboration, mentoring, reading a good book (try audible), webinars, short online learning (I found some YouTube courses to deliver inaccurate information) and face-to-face training if possible.
Marc Hornbeek, DevOps_the_Gray esq.
Talk to customers and experts frequently. Listen and be open to change.
RoseDyson
What is more important being DevOps certified or being DevOps experienced?
Aj Ajantha Godahewa
I would say: Experienced and Certified
Biswajit Mohapatra
How about both - combo pack :-)

To me both are important. Experience ofcos is the primary aspect, to substantiate the experience we need the paper qualification too... one without the other is of no use
RoseDyson
Without a doubt we are going through challenging days, but it is amazing how is forcing us to be collaborate more and be innovative. Leadership is certainly challenged. A case study for the DevOps mindset.

Yup...yet another form of Digital Disruption #COVID19 -Just happening quicker than the Uber / Netflix disruptions....

Switching it up for a bit: What do you feel about the newly launched Open Testing Program of @DEVOPSINST ? Wan to campaign it as well at the moment. IMO – It is very timely. 😊
Marc Hornbeek, DevOps_the_Gray esq.
ITs a good idea, however the terminology used in some of the courses are not consistent and may confuse unless the specific glossary is provided to those taking the tests
BMK
@mhexcalibur - I agree with the terminologies. Find confusing sometime. We need to ubiquitous language and understanding. This has been called out in number of @ITRevDOES #DevOps Enterprise Summit presentations.
BMK
What are the top-3 the biggest challenges in #DevOps adoption @DEVOPSINST
Lavanya Arul
Mindset is one that i am facing right now.... Phew...
Aj Ajantha Godahewa
1) Changing the Culture 2) Culture Change 3) Cultural Change

Leadership at high level, communication and mindset at all levels

Romnick Acabado
I agree about the mindset across the organization and thinking that IT is a cost center while it is not. Upskilling is a must as well because humans of DevOps drive the successful digital transformation.
BMK
That is an interesting point as well. How we fund initiatives within our IT departments. Example like CAPEX and OPEX etc,
Biswajit Mohapatra
too much focus on tools at times, resistance to change, one size fit all approach
Marc Hornbeek, DevOps_the_Gray esq.
1. Leadership alignment, 2. Team alignment, 3. Establishing with governance one or a few model lighthouse application(s) for all enterprise apps to follow.

Allowing leaders to accept that it's ok for them and their employees to fail, as long as the environment is setup to minimise the blast radius. #TheDigitalCoach
Romnick Acabado
It comes with the discipline as well on how we identify the wildly important goal for period of time, the lead activities and their measures plus the cadence of accountability across the organization. How an organization ensure that strategies are well aligned at team level. ;)
BMK
@mbiswajit - I agree with you, most of the time our organizations purpose are buried behind the tools. Excellent point
BMK
We get carried away with Technology, Tools and purpose forgotten. Do we really put our customer in every processes, thoughts and actions.
BMK
@DevOpsLeaderPH - The size of the problem that we are dealing might be different depends on the organizations, culture, regulations and compliance.
Biswajit Mohapatra
What are your thoughts on value stream management platforms while most client scenario today are flooded with discrete automation tools?
Marc Hornbeek, DevOps_the_Gray esq.
VSM platforms such as Plutora can serve as a common backbone for plugging in other tools as pipelines evolve.
Romnick Acabado
It will help on improving some aspects of the end-to-end flow. ;)
BMK

Does anyone have any tools they use for assessing DevOps cultural maturity? #TheDigitalCoach
BMK
- Employee engagement surveys :)
Lavanya Arul
I am curious too... to know of any tools for this....
Biswajit Mohapatra
I will say it Employee Experience Survey @lbmkrishna
BMK
- Engagement vs Experience? @mbiswajit
Romnick Acabado
Employee experience survey based on organization's core values!!! :)
BMK
- How culture could be measured? Is n't the organization how it responds to opportunities and issues?

I am not aware of any universally agreed scale of cultural readiness/maturity. Surveys and such will give you an indicator of the cultural levels but certainly falls way short of a formal "assessment"

What learning resources would you recommend to the IT audience today for DevOps patterns and Value Stream Management practices?
Lavanya Arul
Pheonix project and unicorn
Romnick Acabado
I recommend the following: @DEVOPSINST community channel resources and Value Stream Management SKIL Up micro-conferences communities, which are all FREE. Besides, DevOps blogs, Udemy, Coursera, and Pluralsight are all offering FREE resources as well this April.
