I've used Atlassian JIRA to create stories and features and measured how they flow through the development value stream. You can use cumulative flow diagrams to understand where you may need to optimise.

I have an DevOps Assessment sevice using a seven step alignment blueprint that leads organizations to focus on the specific waste that will best serve their business goals for the next leg in the journey of a specific organization.

You can also do the same with a physical Kanban, but it becomes very manual to measure.

KanBan is good anywhere.

@DigitalColmer i am fully in favourable for physical kanban. Ofcos it ends up as a lot manual work, but helps to visualise... Great way to start with..

I use Kanban as an implementation management tool while in the "realize" phase of the Seven Step Transformation process

I use Kanban to manage all the work for small, medium and large initiatives. The most important thing is to visualise ALL the work...including people development activities.

But then be aware of the waste in choosing the tools as well. I face this a lot of tines.

Great question! For me it start with value stream mapping and the mindset of the whole organization about shifting left and using lean techniques as guide. Deming cycle or continuous improvements efforts and automation are helpful! ;)

I've always depended on the "Why" question. I was surprised how many people do stuff just because without understanding the WHY.

My top tips are....don't overuse email and try 30 minute meetings instead of 1 hour meetings.

I find easier to see bottlenecks and opportunity for improvements when I draw a VS. Management loves it as they can see what is happening.

It will be great to start with specific product that which is visible but with manageable risk. The benefits is that you will be able to build things right and build the right things. You will be able to improve the end to end flow from idea to business value realization.

VSM is all about continuous improvement and evolution as we introduce changes to our value delivery flow. The starting point is to assess the current state, find gaps, calculate gains and incrementally build upon.

I find the best way to show the value of VSM is with any onboarding activity, where there are so many activities, tools, data and people interconnected. Easy to loose track.

Define governance policies and use VSM to automate them

@DEVOPSINST - I am fan of Muda, Muri, Mura - example how many variations we have in our processes, how many forms to get the single thing done in your organizations - a good start

Making the flow and the work more visible allows us to be aware of constraints, bottlenecks, capacity concerns, redundancy, negative emotions that affect behaviors and performance, or any other waste that can stop the business in achieving the goals of the company.

I think it's so that we can measure improvements across the entire value stream...which tells us whether our local optimisations have worked...in other words we have successfully removed waste...and proved it...#TheDigitalCoach

Value Stream management provides a way to implement governance policies as code for the end to end value stream of one or a federated set of pipeleines

- There are number of challenges in an enterprise like how many process we have, how many versions of it, how many variations of it etc., So knowing what we do and need within our organization is important for "High Performing" organizations.

Depends on the key objective of VSM. I find that most clients are focussed on speed, so the TIME dimension is an important measurement

Avolution Abacus, SparxEA and Orbus iServer are great tools for wider business and technology modelling...including VSM.

- IMHO there are people with different understanding within the same enterprise, organization. It is important to map-out the understanding and thats what we do

I have been using VS in operations and find it very helpful. But... it is a bit tricky to get good subscription. The data that can be collected is amazing...
