On Control: automation is not at the expense of control. We have shifted the thinking from focusing on details in the storage system to what the app needs. There are controls to monitor app performance and hint/une the system.

Traditional data services have been things like copy services - local for b/u, app/dev. Remote for HA, BC & DR. New services include - mobility, cloud access, b/u, workload management, etc.
