HadoopWorld Chat
We will be having a pre-event chat with thought leaders prior to #hadoopworld for #BigDataNYC event
Jeff Kelly
Let's talk #BigData ROI - @Wikibon analysis shows enterprise early adopters only getting 50+ cents on the dollar in return so far - are these findings in line with what you're seeing in the market and what do you think the reasons are?
Bill Peterson
yes, reason = no apps! ;-)
Jeff Kelly definitely - but related what about enterprises investing in #hadoop with no real killer use case, just loading up the cluster with lots of data with nothing to do.
Bill Peterson
I think these #'s are reasonable and encourage you to do more of this research. One reason, Hadoop related, Business Unit rolls out Hadoop cluster and sees performance gain, then says, "what else?" see, apps......
Bill Peterson
re: loading up the cluster, yes, it's performance related today but then the BU asks, "Where are the dashboards, where are the reports, I need to be able to share this with non-techies." Inflection point that will effect ROI over time.
Omer Trajman
What's the distribution of ROI though? Some people are seeing a significant return while others are still in the investment phase?
Jeff Kelly yes most enterprises still in PoC phase so ROI difficult to calculate, but those enterprise that have scaled-out deployments challenge is keeping clusters performing even when a killer app is identified

Real-time recommendations for businesses using agorithms, and design is a hot topic..what is the state of the art..thoughts
Michael Hiskey
#Rstats is where the movement is, this spells trouble for #SAS, they have been a long time on the list of "vendors I am most loyalty to that I can't wait to stop paying' list - for decades!
Jeff Kelly is SAS not adapting its business model to the open source #bigdata world fast enough or are open source tools like R just that good?
Omer Trajman
State of the art in recommendations is applying algorithms in real-time, users interact and the underlying indicators change.
John Furrier is wibidata doing anything specific in verticals?
Jeff Kelly
Back to the vendor ecosystem - are #BigData vendors targeting the right people inside the enterprise? Is the buyer an IT person or a biz person?
Michael Hiskey
Successful orgs seem to message "stereo-phonically" to the LOB + IT >> What business outcomes can be obtained (LOB) alongside what functionality is delivered (IT)
Bill Peterson
it's both, but they care about different things. IT cares about SLA's and the Biz cares about real-time and clear reporting/dashboards
Omer Trajman
The most successful adopters of #BigData are aligning IT and business around solving a joint challenge.

#Facebook's new Real-Time ETL Morse is getting introduced at #hadoopworld. Why does the ecosystem need yet another #ETL pipeline for #Hadoop? There is Flume, Kafka, Scribe etc. How does Morse differ?
Jeff Kelly
think it says there is still a need - when one begins to dominate it will become the standard.
Jeff Kelly
real-time ingestion is critical to #BigData apps executing on decisions at the right time (aka"now")
Bill Peterson agree, what does Chris Lynch call it, "in-time" i've stolen that one ;-)
Brad Bokal could not agree more...
John Furrier
Gartner predicts that there will be demand for 4.4 million big data jobs by 2015 - Is there a skills gap?
Michael Hiskey
The elusive, and expensive #DataSci - in high demand, but orgs will want to have dozens of them, not hundreds
Michael Hiskey
Key is to enable them with technology that they can get into the hands of business analysts, become part of "business as usual"
Jeff Kelly
without question there's a skills gap - which is why we need more pre-baked #BigData apps and developer friendly app dev tools - seeing that on dispplay at #splunkconf today

@furrier thanks for the invite. the #hadoopworld and #BigDataNYC look amazing. Will try my best to attend the Crowdchat.

What are the new projects that enable non-MR workloads on a Hadoop Cluster?
Michael Hiskey
The #Hadoop Community has gotten smarter, moving from the "NoSQL center of the universe" to embrace a broader ecosystem of technology
Jeff Kelly
agree - integrating #hadoop w existing infrastructure important but key is using right tech for right job
John Furrier
customers leverage new data processing technologies like Hadoop and NoSQL databases and R for statistical analysis..keeping new sw coming pure open source is key
Michael Hiskey The dynamics are changing - new generation of techies don't expect to pay for core SW stack

Cloud Mobile and Social megatrends are rolling right along..the big data question around social data is interesting.. What role will social data and machine data play cc: #splunkconf
