VMware vSphere
#vmw28days event talking with experts and thought leaders on vSphere
Roger Lund (vExpert)
Who will be planning on deploying the VMware Appliance, as it now supports the same Hosts, and VM's as the Windows Install.
Chris Nickl
i've actually been doing deployments for my customers for some time, and will continue to do so. It just works really nicely.
Ather Beg
For me, the lack of MSSQL support is not great as a lot of companies have their resilient clusters and want to use it.
Aline Menezes
Is the vcenter appliance now supporting plugins from 3rd party vendors like Netapp's VSC? Or even for SRM?
Gerard Strouth
I would if it would ever support VUM
Chris Nickl
@gstrouth i have heard that the new VUM will support the VCSA... again something i heard today.
Chris Nickl
@amenezes0617 so that is up to the vendors just like it was previously.
Gerard Strouth
@ck_nic I heard in a separate release after 6.0
Aline Menezes
What about SRM?
Chris Nickl
@gstrouth that very well may be the case. I've heard it both ways, however i tend to believe the separate release one.
William Lam
@amenezes0617 afaik, those should be supported. @BenMeadowcroft can better comment on SRM, but solution just talks to VC regardless if its Windows/VCSA
William Lam
@gstrouth not sure what you mean, You can use Windows VUM w/VCSA, that's worked since 5.x days :)
Gerard Strouth
@lamw Yeah but if I need to have the server anyway why not just run vCenter on it as well
Chris Nickl
@gstrouth the customer i'm working with now can't use the Windows Appliance due to security and other reasons. I still see a play for the VCSA.
William Lam
@gstrouth your statement was whether VUM would be support it, which It does :) Also not everyone runs VUM on same VC, just depends
Bryan Krausen
@amenezes0617 SRM 5.8.3 fully supports vCSA today.
William Lam
Enhanced Linked Mode is a pretty cool feature in both Windows VC/VCSA for those that used ADAM based Linked Mode or wanted "poor mans" single pane of glass
Gerard Strouth
@lamw Sorry meant as 1 appliance, yeah many use cases but for me having it together is a benefit
William Lam
@gstrouth we hear you loud & clear :) Trust me, I'm with you on all this, something I mention to PM/Engr on a regular basis.
William Lam
Some other cool enhancements is that new VCSA 6.0 has scripted install for automated deployments, much simpler to use!
William Lam
I have a nice blog series on Automating VCSA 6.0 deployments in the coming weeks. Not only make deployments easier but also POC/Evals
Chris Nickl
@lamw Mr. Lam, i greatly greatly look forward to it, as i have used a TON of your automation stuff.
William Lam
@ck_nic Thanks! Lots more coming from me as well as VMware Engineering. VCSA is only going to get better and better!
Burhan Halilov
@lamw I really hope it's not the ridiculous browser based install from the beta
Chris Nickl
@7400N i actually hope it is, i like it better.
William Lam
@7400N Nope, as I said "scripted install" = No GUI :) Accepts a nice JSON input & deploys VCSA + Configures. Supports Windows/Mac OSX/Linux. Yes, truly multiple platform!
Ben Meadowcroft
@lamw @amenezes0617 yep, SRM supports VCSA and has done for several releases.
Eric Nielsen
Thanks to the hosts today!

Mike Onsing
This was super technical and amazing resource
John Furrier
My brain is full :-)
Eric Nielsen
Also to Martin Yip, who is @vmwarevsphere
Chris Nickl
This was awesome, thank you all
Bryan Krausen
Awesome job guys. First time I've used CrowdChat.
Ather Beg
My pleasure! It was fun and lots of great discussion/questions! :-)
John Furrier
Thanks for using our new engagement tool
Ather Beg
My first in which I learnt a lot as well :-)
Stuart Miniman
Congrats to all of the new and returning vExperts http://blogs.vmware.... - btw, for those new to CrowdChat, don't forget to click vote on favorites, the transcript can be sorted by time or votes.

First we would like to say thank you to everyone who applied for the 2015 vExpert program.
John Furrier
this is a great chat I'm digesting a ton of great content
Chris Nickl
Great post Stuart. I know i'm excited to be selected again this year.
Roger Lund (vExpert)
I was Happy to have made the list. :0)
John Furrier
I can't wait for #vmworld where I can kick Tony Dunn's butt again in beer pong :-)
Chris Nickl
@Furrier i missed beer pong last year, i will have to make it this year.
John Furrier
@ck_nic last year we had such a great time playing @Tony_dunn and I both old school had a great time throwing the celebrity tosses
Ather Beg
Nice one! Congrats to all new and old vExperts. Hope this community keeps growing always!
Chris Nickl
@Furrier i'm bummed i missed it. I now look forward to this year
Christopher Bachner
Are there any changes to the free edition of ESXI? What about the web client?
Chris Nickl
There is now a client that works with the ESXi hosts directly now.
vTiMMay
@vmwarevsphere Any specifics on the free ESXi?
VMware vSphere
close to 100 performance enhancements to the web client. You will see it's much more responsive
Ather Beg
The web client has been enhanced both in terms of performance and layout. Works quite well with Chrome and IE but not so good with FF. Still workable!
Christopher Bachner
@ck_nic A web client or a "fat" client?
VMware vSphere
ESXi changes in terms of scale... across the board, nearly everything is 2X, 3X ore even 4X improvement in scale
Chris Nickl
So i've used the "fat" client. Looks like the existing one, but won't connect to a vCenter
Féidhlim
Free ESXi will typically not have a VC. C# Client still used. Basic VM Mgmt only
Féidhlim
@ck_nic C# Client in 6.0 WILL connect to VC at GA
Ather Beg
Both are available. Fat client (C#) upon GA will work with both vCenter and ESXi (contrary to some misinformation) :-)
Chris Nickl
one thing to note, is it can now actually edit Virtual Hardware 10 VMs
Ather Beg
@ck_nic Upon GA, it should work with vCenter too :-)
Chris Nickl
@AtherBeg thank you for the correction
Christopher Bachner
Ok cool. VCenter has just too much overhead if you have only like 1 or 2 free ESXI servers! Thanks a lot
Chris Nickl
there are quite a few features that i can't live w/o even with my 2 hosts at home
