Matthew North
Can you help me understand how this fits in with the AWS partnership? There seems to be a large overlap.
Rick Wilhelm
Fits well (imo) AWS is perfect for cattle... and is gaining surprising capability for pets.
Sorin Costea
I don't think it's overlapping here, rather enablement
Ron Blair
Hello Matthew - Our solution is completely hardware-dedicated and would be applicable for customers who desire this.
Byron Miller
Well, one of the interesting aspects of this game is the companies that have their own strategies and offerings are seen as being above the rest! It's good to have partners. It's better to be seen as a thought leader.
Andy Fugate
CSC's overall strategy is to involve our Partner Public Cloud providers in a brokerage stance using Hybrid Cloud Services to differentiate our offerings by providing orchestration and automation between clouds (both CSC and public)
Matthew North
Thanks Ron, It sounds from the talk to be a dynamic VPC with elastic scaling. Is the difference that the hardware is on premise then?
Michael Schnebele
Matthew these new offerings are targeted towards our clients that may have reservations about moving to a public cloud environment. These offers will be for those clients looking for a private cloud environment.
Rick Wilhelm
@RonLBlair And using the Agility platform enables infrastructure contestability
Matthew North
Totally agree that having their dynamic VPC hosted in a data center within their country would be a big benefit.
Ron Blair
@rickwilhelm Exactly! There will be situations when AWS makes sense and when this solution is appropriate. We expect our dedicated service to be on par with public pricing ~500 VMs.
Byron Miller
Yes, Agility will be playing a steadily more important role as it facilitates true hybrid cloud with processes that embrace different cloud architectures
Rick Wilhelm
Byron: yes... and Cattle model certainly emphasizes need for automation
Rick Wilhelm
Interested in your thoughts on how to modify traditional network security models to better match webscale architectures
Ron Blair
Hi Rick - This is where I am excited about the network virtualization capabilities this will bring. And from a security perspective, NSX is the equivalent of 100's/1000's of firewalls in the datacenter -- but easy to manage
Rick Wilhelm
@RonLBlair Yes... a step toward application-level firewalls; treat the inside like the outside and there doesn't need to be an outside.
Sorin Costea
I'm not very sure I understand how fare we are today with this, as an organization...
Rick Wilhelm
I think that it varies: more experience with pets, but significant and growing use cases with farm animals
Sorin Costea
right, on the tech side. But on the development and org?
Ron Blair
Sorin - I agree and it is creating a mindshift change already -- SLAs and things like "backups" have a different context.
Jeff Ely
The Mindshift is needed to full understand and move to a webscale based environment and away from the legacy thinking of managing environments
Lisa Braun
Say, again, how you define systems of engagement and how they contrast with systems of record. I recall hearing Forrester first talk about systems of engagement several years ago, so what's new with these systems or the trend towards them?
Ron Blair
Hello Lisa - The overall concept is really unchanged since then.
Lisa Braun
@RonLBlair I've heard @DanHushon say recently that the 2, sys of engagement and sys of record, are equally at play. Among other things that deepens the skills gap.
Rick Wilhelm
getting systems of record able to go into the cloud is a key element of app modernization
Lisa Braun
@rickwilhelm Cloud-enabling those high transaction legacy systems to be more flexible and more efficiently run. Is that what most of our customers (large enterprises) face?
Rick Wilhelm
Yes... and to avoid big capex on platform refresh; enable move to OpEx for pay-as-you-go
Ron Blair
100% agree. This is the importance of looking beyond a narrowly focused "infrastructure" approach -- engaging consulting and apps teams with "Webscale Jumpstart" prong and ongoing App Transformation.
Andy Fugate
With the extensive investment CSC has in current infrastructure are there plans to upgrade our DC infra or start with key DC's as green field? Or is this at the Reference Architecture level?
Andy Fugate
Great job, BTW !
Paul
you can say that as a Soundbites veteran ! :-)
Ron Blair
Thanks Andy. We are in the midst of incorporating it into DC Infrastructure plans. However, due to NSX and other attributes, this is not a dependent as might suspect.
Bob Donnelly
Is deploying at the VM level low enough? This still requires a fair bit of integration to get a tested VM that is deployable. I am looking at containers, e.g. Docker and Kubernetes, to get a finer grain upgrade path.
Ron Blair
Completely agree Bob. We didn't cover it today. But the RedHat stack will be uber-focused on application-developmen enablement -- things like OpenShift and Docker
Bob Donnelly
Thanks. Would like to see this when ready.
Sorin Costea
@RonLBlair are you also the ones checking on the stack?
Ron Blair
@sorincos I'm sorry Sorin - can you further explain your question?
Rick Wilhelm
Re: Docker and Kubernetes... ping @tjmcs1 ; he's presently using it with #hanlon
Sorin Costea
@RonLBlair you mentioned Docker and OpenShift and probably Atomic - so are you using these already?
Ron Blair
@Sorin Costea Now I understand - thanks for clarification. We are in the process of doing so and is on our roadmap. The first "minimum viable product" iteration is for the workloads discussed --- then providing IaaS for BigData, OpenShift, then Docker.
Matthew North
You may not want to discuss it here and that is okay but are there any plan to incorporate this offering within G-Cloud?
Ron Blair
Yes we have planning sessions scheduled in near term.
