#splunkconfSplunk .conf2014 Conversations at Splunk .conf2014 Oct. 6-9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Jeff Kelly
So let's kick things off. @splunk is clearly one of the hottest #BigData companies on the market. Huge revenue and customer growth. What is driving Splunk's massive growth?
Jeff Kelly
my perspective: Splunk is both a platform and an application provider for machine data analysis - enabling the Splunk community to add value and solving business problems via targeted apps
tara0525
Well as one of the keynote speakers from Coca-Cola will tell us, Splunk is a single techology stack to address big data challenges
John Furrier
Internet of things is big deal for the mkt growth. data across the board is having a huge impact to organziations
tara0525
No need to sew together a database a visualization layer a query layer or master all those different skill/toolsets, #splunk does it all in one
John Furrier
What does Splunk think about the competition
Jeff Kelly
@tara0525 agree. that's @Splunk's platform play. analytics/index engine, app dev platform and application delivery for #BigData
tara0525
IOT is a huge opportunity and we're delighted to have several IOT partners sponsoring the event: #kepware #thingworx #machineshop and more: http://bit.ly/Zcd3CR
Splunk Worldwide Users' Conference | Sponsors
Splunk indexes and makes searchable data from any app, server or network device in real time including logs, config files, messages, alerts, scripts and metrics.
John Furrier
what is the biggest driver for IoT? Is there an app you guys at Splunk see being the biggest focus
tara0525
No app per se, it's really the integration with our partners that gives our customers to see their IOT data in one place
Jeff Frick
@tara0525 Can never get enough Customers singing praises
tara0525
so similar to how we've given IT operations and security a single pane of glass, we can now do this for manufacturing, oil and gas, energy processes too
tara0525
We have several cool IOT sessions at .conf from Volkswagen, Polycom, Arenea Solutions doing work for USDoD, Octoblu
pie bob
we've got one talk that will demo (right in the room!) some cool low-power ibeacon bluetooth 'minority report' style stuff!
tara0525
Royal Flying Air Service in Australia: Splunk planes AND Splunk things like temperature of medicines and organs in flight so that they ensure safe arrival to their destination
Brian Gilmore
@furrier we are excited to have such a great group of partners joining us. Other apps will be discussed at IoT booth, including community supported Mod Inputs for Kafka, Kinesis, and JMS.
Brian Gilmore
definitely check out IoT panel sessions as well, one for industrial and one for enterprise, panelists from #Cisco, #ThingWorx, #MachineShop, #Kepware, #CQCloud, #N3N
Jeff Frick
@BrianMGilmore -> Are you working with GE and Cisco on the IoT?
Jeff Frick
@tara0525 > How is that IoT standards alliance going?
Brian Gilmore
@JeffFrick come listen to industrial panel with Cisco VP Sanjay Pol, also Cisco team will be presenting on APM with vision for IoE as well.
Brian Gilmore
#Gemalto also joining us in the Enterprise IoT panel
Kit Dotson
I think Splunk's already in-the-trenches placement has helped them a great deal. I remember when Splunk was advertised as the de facto log analysis tool; it's not much of a leap to go from systemic data to big data with those chops.
John Furrier
Question: What are the biggest things slowing down adoption for real time data in the enterprise?
Alacer Cogitatus
Legacy Systems. "Why change what works and doesn't cost as much?"
Jeff Kelly
its still early days - the tech for streaming analytics is there, but companies need to learn how to harness it
Irshad Raihan
The perception that the infrastructure and software needed to ingest and process real time data is exponentially more expensive
Jeff Frick
> all about how "real time" defined. In time to save a customer transaction? in time to prevent a major problem? seems to be a variable definition.
#Splunk $SPLK
Jeff Kelly
@JeffFrick definitely. I like the phrase streaming applications, which I define as those applications that analyze data as it flows through the system and prompts an action in sub-second time-frame.
Jeff Kelly
@irshadraihan good point Irshad. A lot of enterprise practitioners think real-time/streaming analytic applications costs too much to justify investment (not to mention that its complex.) But developments by Splunk and others is changing that.
tara0525
@JeffFrick agree, customers define real time in many different ways. In his keynote, Mark Graff, CISO, NASDAQ OMX will cover how real time visibility helped them address the heartbleed bug
Irshad Raihan
@jeffreyfkelly Spot on! Open source s/w innovation and scale-out hardware have converged to offer enterprises much more choice and flexibility to deploy data-intensive real-time workloads
Jeff Frick
@irshadraihan > Begs the question, what is the "real time reality" value/cost equation in your opinion?
tara0525
In #Splunk you can choose whether you want #realtimedata flow or not, it's just a matter of computing resource allocation
Irshad Raihan
@jeffreyfkelly @JeffFrick "it depends" on the workload. For security & compliance, it's the cost of a data breach and brand erosion. For IT ops, the delta is smaller but yet critical.

@tara0525 > How did the @SplunkStorm fremium model work out?
Jeff Kelly
What is the state of @Splunk's partner ecosystem and what role do partners play in enabling Spunk customers to increase the return on their investment in Splunk.

a number of our excellent partners participate on http://answers.splun..., asking and answering questions for the benefit of all our users--it's a win-win situation.

Jeff Frick
@Splunkconf > How many partners? breakdown and population of partner types?
Jeff Kelly
I see that @Redhat is keynoting as a customer, but is also a partner. Interesting area between middleware/messaging and IoT/machine data analysis
Kit Dotson
To me, I've always seen Splunk as part security company and part big data analysis company. Splunk's partners have generally shown this with networking (Cisco, Akamai, Juniper, etc) and in security with FireEye and others.
tara0525
since #splunk is agnostic in the types of data we'll ingest, and we know our customers have many many other tools they use
tara0525
our goal is to work with partners to make it as easy as possible to get new types of data + valuable searches to customers in the form of apps--like getting started kits
tara0525
and since splunk gives the full picture it helps customers to use the tools they have more effectively
Kit Dotson
But I've also seen a huge strength in connection to operations with companies such as AppDynamics, Boundary, APM, etc. because the other side of security is stability and knowing what's going on, very important for #DevOps
John Furrier
@tara0525 Is there pricing pressure on Splunk? How do you guys keep the channel happy with their offerings
Jeff Kelly
AWS is another interesting one. Really interested to hear about the state of that partnership as well how Splunk Cloud is faring in the marketplace
Jeff Kelly
@oxidizingangel yea, operational network security monitoring and analytics seems to be the killer app for @splunk - kind of a hot topic these days too
tara0525
We've got a few things cooking up with AWS which we'll talk about more at .conf2014 :)
Jeff Kelly
Seeing database/environment-specific monitoring and analytics apps on @Splunk as well - VMware, Microsoft Exchange, MongoDB and others.
Irshad Raihan
yes, @redhat is both a customer and partner. Cold Splunk data deployed on a federated pool of x86 servers running Red Hat Storage is a killer app. Easy scale @ low cost...what's not to like!
Irshad Raihan
