IT infrastructure's value
How IT infrastructure is positively impacting business results.
#infrachatThe move to hybrid cloudIt’s no longer public vs. private cloud. The future is all about hybrid.
IBM Systems
Many see the potential for cloud but aren't sure how to integrate with current IT systems. What’s the first step?
John Easton
Think about what workloads could move to #cloud today. There will be some. Move the standalone ones first
John Easton
Heavily integrated workloads will be hard to move so cut your teeth on the easier ones first to gain experience
John Schlosser
Experience is the best teacher so I believe private - Cloudburst - is a great starting point for those with a budget for R&D. Otherwise, partnerships (IBM) are key.
John Furrier
first step is culture then to reset and standardize then design operational model imho
IBM Software Defined
Organizations need to first define a cloud strategy in the context of their overall IT infrastructure strategy
IBM Storage
I´d say staring with a deployment of highly optimized dynamic infrastructure i.e virtualization
IBM Software Defined
Educate yourself and the biz about the biz oppty, cultural shifts and tech realities of cloud
Steven Dickens
look at simple, easy workloads such a dev & test, cut your teeth here first then grow, trying a hybrid multi-platform workload first is doomed to failure...
John McArthur
@IBMSDE Yes. Cloud strategy has to come AFTER understanding application performance, availability and recovery requirements, and AFTER assessing information governance, security, and privacy requirements.
Mike Walter
understand that cloud is an architecture not just a delivery mechanism
John McArthur
@JohnPEaston Yes, you can move stand alone apps more easily, but you first have to understand the availability, performance and governance requirements.
John Easton
@IBMSDE Also think about whether the organisation can consume standardised services. I see many organisations struggle with this one.
IBM Software Defined
Seek out open standards communities to take advantage of flexibility enabling greater choice and faster innovation cycles
John McArthur
@furrier Agreed, John. I've talked to organizations that have NO global IT infrastructure standards and others that have standards completely nailed down.
John Furrier
Question for group: What are the biggest concerns to be a global infrastructure?
Kenneth Muckenhaupt
Information management and security strategies
John Furrier
I just interviewed @alan_nance from Philips he sees compliance and security with native cloud offerings
John McArthur
Information governance requirements that vary by country.
Steven Dickens
agree with @kenjm0154 but would also add building for service and TCO....
Kenneth Muckenhaupt
Steve, good point. I agree.
John Easton
I think the other challenge is that you have different legal frameworks to operate within that doubtless conflict / disagree somewhere
John Easton
One challenge with global stuff is how to scale to it. Very often solutions that work well when small scale OK to big but then fail badly at global scale
Scott Firth
over the past year, it's become clear that location of information is very important for compliance and security.
Mike Walter
talent is the constraining resource
John Furrier
@allan_nance just introduced the concept on @theCUBE called Consumption based Infrastructure which is the new model for global cloud
IBM Software Defined
Thinking of people/processes: A top challenge is the ability to keep up with increasing pace of biz req'ts
Steven Dickens
will take a look @theCUBE after this chat thanks for the head up...
Niharika Trivedi
@IBMSDE that is why the study indicates - Less than one-third of IT executives believe they are effectively collaborating with the business to provide IT infrastructure solutions
John McArthur
Cloud enabling compliance and security? Or did he say clouds increase compliance and security concerns?
John Furrier
@jtmcarthur56 Phillips is doing massive POC for 7 clouds all standarized with their suppliers spanning their commercial and enterprise businesses. Massive transformation but security/compliance is huge
John Easton
Yes - many clients I work with are building "codes of connection" that any cloud provider has to work with
IBM Systems
Many orgs continue to invest in IT infrastructure despite budget & resource constraints. What’s driving this decision?
Kenneth Muckenhaupt
@IBMSmrtrCmptn Regulatory compliance analytics, customer insight, and mobile banking
Kenneth Muckenhaupt
Each represents a risk that must be mitigated whether it be Op Risk, Fraud risk, Compliance Risk, or Competitive Risk
John Schlosser
Tactical savings due to modernization, particularly in storage.
Niharika Trivedi
To tackle the next wave of technology trends - Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Social and Security (CAMSS)
Steven Dickens
need to gain competitive advantage is biggest driver and IT can be the fastest way to achieve this...
John McArthur
Demand from customers to improve the customer experience and the value received.
IBM Software Defined
Interesting stat: 2/3 of IT exec leaders look beyond costs as a top driver for infra investment #IBVstudy
John Easton
@kenjm0154 If not regulation then external factors certainly. Just been working with a client who as a result of a change in the law has had part of their business impacted hard
IBM Software Defined
Things like speed to market, capturing revenue oppty, eliminating unplanned downtime, increased flexibility are top of mind
Brandon Mann
@JohnSchloss Absolutely! Sometimes investment is cheaper than current state...and we do a pretty good job showing that in our IT Optimization Assessments. http://tinyurl.com/o...
IBM Systems Lab Services and Training - Cross Platform Consulting Services - IT Optimization Consulting
IBM Systems Lab Services and Training IT Optimization Consulting team has the experience and skill to provide platform independent consultants for IT Optimization, ILM, and Virtualization studies.
John Furrier
Inertia is the key driver
Scott Firth
interesting point, I can't think of a business today that doesn't need to connect their customer-facing IT systems with their applications that manage product/service info. customer records, etc. This requires investment.
John McArthur
Met with an organization last week that was required by some countries to do all data processing in country. They operate in over 50 countries. No cloud service there.
IBM Systems
Last question: Orgs aren't planning for the future due to immediate challenges. How can solution providers get customers ready for change?
IBM Software Defined
Using a car analogy: how effective of a driver are you by only looking through the rear-view mirror?
Kenneth Muckenhaupt
@IBMSmrtrCmptn Recognize the org’s tactical and strategic pressures and provide integrated solutions that respond to those pressures
IBM Software Defined
Tip: Look to automate manual processes and use repeatable best practices to free time and focus on strategic initiatives
John Easton
By anticipating the future needs of their customers, putting offerings in place to help. If the customer can't look forward then the provider maybe can
Steven Dickens
take small simple steps rather than promise to feed the worlds poor and deliver world peace with the first project...
John Easton
Key here is making this easy for the customer to consume whilst delivering real value in a short time
CrowdFather
@IBMSDE love the car analogy it's like texting and driving while looking in the rear view mirror - disaster happens
John McArthur
@Crowdfather Texting, driving, looking in rear view mirror, while assuming there's nothing but straight open road ahead and the car will just drive itself.
Niharika Trivedi
1) Identify the challenges, needs 2) Educating them 3) Provide end-to-end IT infrastructure solutions
