Chris Preimesberger
We've 5 mins left, how about some final thoughts and perhaps some takeaways you got from this session?
Paul Speciale
healthy conversation, it helps to see that many of us see similar themes, both in problems and possible solutions.
Jim Hammer
- a lot of great information from really talented panelists. It underscores the importance of cyber security and security in general. The real cost of doing it well, and certainly not well is immense.
Sanjay Jagad
great dialogue. Lots of new developments.
David Ngo
Thanks to all who participated, excellent perspectives from all the panelists
Juan Mojica
This was manic/frantic fun. I appreciate everyone's insights
Adrian Moir
Data usage, adoptions and applications will continue to evolve, don't stagnate, evolve your protection and security with your needs not those of others. Make it personal.
Chris Preimesberger
I know I'm gonna want to sit down and dissect this chat for a story on eWEEK, for sure!
Nigel Hawthorn
Data and users are the key - technologies are secondary and we should start decision-making from a data-centric view
Jim Hammer
@AdrianMoir - Could not agree more. Never be satisfied.
Penny Gralewski
Really great ideas and questions here, appreciate everyone sharing insights. Keep #dataprotection top of mind, it's so essential for your organization's customers, innovation and financial advantage. #eWEEKchat
Gadi Naor
main take: security must follow the gravitational power of your data - whether at rest or in flight - on cloud or off cloud
Jim Hammer
- Thanks so much Chris for the exciting topic and to fellow panelists. #eWEEKchat
Nirmal Ranganathan
As a first time participant, thoroughly enjoyed the conversations. Security by design not an add on and more end user education
Chris Preimesberger
I won't go to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact unless you all think we should. Yes, no?
Nigel Hawthorn
We've seen HUGE traffic changes b/c of it, so OK by me
Paul Speciale
we are strengthening basic practices in SSO, password policies and MFA
Sanjay Jagad
COVID has created unique challenges around data protection and access. Data security and collaboration has never been so important
Molly Presley
No, I think many of these topics supercede the COVID situation. I think talking strategy is a nice, refreshing topic! :-)
Lianne Caetano
▪ McAfee research shows external cloud threats have also increased around 600% during COVID-19 lockdown. But internal threats are static: https://www.mcafee.com/enterprise/en-us/forms/gate...

It has driven a whole new paradigm around remote work in industries where this wasn't considered possible before. There are big security implications to this move.
Penny Gralewski
It's top of mind for so many IT organizations - let's answer the questions the chat participants are asking.
Gadi Naor
Please No :) let's talk COVID-20 or vaccine for COVID-19 ;)
David Ngo
Fine with me too. It's forced the reexamination of how people do business and conduct their operations
Jim Hammer
- we've seen bad actors flock to using COVID-19 as a social engineering method. A few months ago, anything with COVID-19 was a hot target for folks to click on...we had to get out early to train not to go to anything but known sites.
ryo koyama
the shift to more remote work has shown absolutely the issues with trying to manage network governance -- when it becomes a bring your own service provider.
Chris Preimesberger
@Molly_J_Presley Well, Molly ... looks like you're outvoted. I was thinkng along your lines!
Nigel Hawthorn
600% increase in videoconferencing apps, people retiring/changing VPNs due to bottlenecks, lots of major changes that will probably stay forever

Juan Mojica
It is top of mind like most are saying
Jim Hammer
- Healthcare has seen an uptick in ransomware and phishing attacks, especially during COVID's focus so we’ve been working with our clients more closely – especially the smaller clinics that aren’t as security savvy as a hospital or larger health system.
Nirmal Ranganathan
remote work does provide a new range of security challenges
Paul Speciale
it is the hot topic for sure, and has had a causal impact in more bad actors after data, especially in healthcare unfortunately
Nigel Hawthorn
sadly, also seen bad actors target enterprises through clouds more - so no reuse of passwords boys and girls!!!
Gadi Naor
@GadiNaor I can say one thing in this context ... we have seen a significant rise of tailor made k8s probing attempts made from all continents
Jim Hammer
@ofcourseduh - agreed, has bumped up our efforts exponentially with everyone working from home outside the confines of our infrastructure safety blanket ;-)
Adrian Moir
we are curious animals, we like to understand what;s going on, opens the door for attack vectors to leverage the curiosity to their own ends.
slarkin202
@pspeciale Yes, Healthcare is under attack even more so than pre-COVID. Medical records data is a target.
Chris Preimesberger
@MrsJones0523 Thanks, but your link is gated. Do you have a public link?
Chris Preimesberger
Okay, you asked for it! Q5: How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted your business the first half of 2020 and do you see it continuing to last for the rest of the year?
Alex Sakaguchi
can of worms there my friend! Answer forthcoming...
Nigel Hawthorn
A5: We've seen people make changes in weeks that they were planning to execute in years.

(edited)

Paul Speciale
Minor impact on the industries we target and talk to for our solutions. The main thing of concern is on hardware supply chain.
David Ngo
A5: We have seen a significant increase in attacks on remote workers which has triggered IT departments to contemplate endpoint security with new enthusiasm
David Ngo
A5: @metallic_io decided to offer Endpoint data protection for free during the pandemic to help with what was previously a lower priority for many

(edited)

Alex Sakaguchi
A5: we service customers across ALL industries. Lots of supply chain concerns. Lots of model shifts at lightning speed. BUT, lots of concern on the data itself. Interestingly we've seen folks double down on data protection best practices.
Penny Gralewski
A5: At the start of the global shutdowns, priorities were clear.
- Keep people safe.
- Keep customers satisfied.
- Keep people working.
…now the focus is on preventing ransomware, being ready for DR, cloud & finding ways to repurpose the budget. #eWEEKchat

David Ngo
A5: This will cause a permanent shift in how working from home is perceived and the associated challenges will persist
Nirmal Ranganathan
A5: Easier transition for Rackspace given existing remote work policies and practices. We've seen both customers pause and scale back work and others use the opportunity to under take huge transformation projects. Security is definitely top of mind for our customers
Adrian Moir
A5: The entire company moved to remote working, with amazing support throughout the company. Constant reminders though about the potential threats
Penny Gralewski
@virtualpenny IT needed to quickly adopt new skills. There is so much free education right now. #Cloud vendors have free online courses. Commvault opened up our eLearning and self-paced data mgmt courses #eWEEKchat https://www.commvault.com/customer-care-program

As the COVID-19 pandemic changes the way we live, and the way we work, intelligently managing data is critical to organizations all around the world.
David Ngo
A5: SaaS services to support remote work have taken on new significance and protection/governance of those services needs to be top of mind
Alex Sakaguchi
folks also talking about what happens later. in healthcare especially de-regulation has led to some amazing shifts/adoption.
Gadi Naor
attackers and threat actors in WFH mode, with all day long hands on keyboard - translated to major increase in breach attempts - some of them actually targets open source projects that ended up inside containers
Alex Sakaguchi
I think some changes are permanent. Working remotely went from a way to keep folks socially distanced to major cost savings (and increase worker sat in some cases) to the business. Still need to protect the data.
