We're now seeing the emergence of true hybrid cloud where you can not only manage data and workloads centrally across on-premises and public cloud, but have data and app workload mobility across clouds and be able to leverage multi-cloud. The future is exciting!

Hybrid today is largely a collection of workloads running in different location - I think the vision of hybrid as David Wang says is seamless, fluid access to resources to allow workloads to perform at levels defined by a business SLA...

@dvellante yea and those collection of workloads in diff locations means more complexity and more silos. hybrid cloud needs to make things easy

- Simple definition is that Hybrid allows you to move workloads in and out of the datacenter (and back). That's vs. multi-cloud which is typically multiple non-data center options. AWS and Eucalyptus would have been hybrid. AWS, Azure and Google would be multi-cloud.

@CTOAdvisor Yup, repeat after me: Cloud is not a destination.

There is a myth of public cloud being "easier" because it is being managed by a provider but in reality it can be just as siloed & complex. True Hybrid Cloud requires the convergance of multiple apps & the tools required to support them to be simple & seamless.

@ballen_clt Why is workload at the center of the definition. Why not select data as the baseline capability?

I view hybrid cloud as the given today. Its the model allowing customers of all types to utilize the power of the cloud for its resiliency and always-on service level, while also maintaining/enhancing the needs of a customer’s on-prem solution, especially around security.

@CTOAdvisor What's interesting is that as workloads evolve to be more "data-centric" (e.g., AI), data absolutely is the center of the definition. Other "process-centric," traditional workloads remain a centerpiece, if only because of legacy approaches to funding IT.

@CTOAdvisor - No argument there. I was speaking more on behalf of the enterprise customers we talk to. They almost always speak in terms of workloads. We're usually the ones getting them to focus on data. Workloads look like granite counters. Data feels like roofs & windows.

Customers often talk about an automated support experience thanks to global AIOps to improve IT operations... less time on the phone, more time innovating and supporting new-age applications!

Companies that I talk to are using machine learning and that requires working knowledge of the data and data flows. Impacts are wide reaching from security to user experience

The ability to predict and proactively prevent disruptions thru AI/ML is becoming a game changer for customers. Of course, that's just the starting point. The value extends into keeping IT infrastructure optimized.

use of #AI and #ML will be plugged in from the way you write code, to way you deploy it, way you mine logs in operations to way data gets into its own storage tiers. Can’t pinpoint single tools, yet 😉. Complex issues are a big set of small ones (in IT at least)

And love that we've extended InfoSight to 3PAR, HPE Primera, HPE Servers (ProLiant, Apollo, Synergy compute), and now HPE SimpliVity!

@furrier yep, ML has huge implications on security and then storage... compute is already well handled (still can benefit from ML)

Unless you're in the IT business AI & automation should only make your business better & more efficient. Technology today should improve the businesses time-to-market while lowering the overall costs. And "vendor lock-in" has to be a thing of the past here as well.

@sarbjeetjohal ML and servers is developing but taking that insight and feeding it into an AI engine like InfoSight, not aware of anyone else doing that today.

AI is key here, where should you put your workloads and how you optimize for cost, performance and available resources. As hybrid cloud is invariably more complex than public cloud or on-premise alone, AI is key to bringing in the intelligence that automates decisions

You have to attack the IT labor problem...so automation, analytics that can allow for predictive analysis and even in some instances take action - move from managing LUNs to enabling workloads that drive digital business

AIOps + Intelligent Automation + Application awareness + flexibility of choices = most efficient hybrid cloud storage architecture!

Certainly not yet, but in the next few years - large capacity, low latency, and inexpensive persistent memory (think Optane) will be very promising in improving cost efficiencies for many!

@dvellante We don't want to use "Data Lifecycle Management" as a talking point but this is really what you're describing. Ensuring that Data lives at the right place, at the right time, & moves around as needs dictate seamlessly is a must as we move forward.

Egress charges are a real problem. Today, we have to design around egress cost. It ends in the a less optimal performance design.

Cost efficiency comes from minimizing the need to land data on disk persistently. Intelligent automated optimization of data placement across the hybrid cloud is big piece of the solution. AIops applied to distributed storage.

@dvellante Sounds like HPE InfoSight, at least as a starting point for AIOps!

I really thought the #AIops aspect of storage will propel a next generation capability and help the IIoT market which is having huge issues with security

@CTOAdvisor Are excessive egress charges built into the technology (and can't easily be fixed)? Or are they a market failure (which competition will fix)?

@CTOAdvisor - Most enterprises still look at egress as an afterthought. They're clueless about how quickly the "meter starts running". They're almost penalizing folks for hybrid architecture.

I think it's a market failure similar to metering voice, txt, and data proved to be in wireless.

Without a doubt it's AI. We already see this with Infosight - It sets HPE storage worlds ahead, and continues to evolve. Exciting to see HPE's incorporation of AI throughout the portfolio and offerings.

@CTOAdvisor Very strongly agree: Market failure. Lot's of changes coming to cloud pricing and packaging as enterprises gain real experience with needs.

The idea of storage no longer being this piece of hardware stuck in a closet somewhere that no one wants to talk about is powerful. Storage has become a powerful knowledge and automation center in environments. Working to support the rest of the environment.
