Cognitive

Cognitive Computing & Big Data
Discuss the new book "Cognitive Computing and Big Data Analytics" by Hurwitz, Kaufman & Bowles
Dave Vellante
Q8. Is it just Watson or are there other cognitive systems we should watch?
Adrian Bowles
Watson is the $1B gorilla, but there are a lot of firms working on different aspects. We just profiled 20+ ML vendors
Judith Hurwitz
I am seeing a lot of new companies emerging that are focused on creating cognitive computing systems for travel, healthcare, city management, etc
Adrian Bowles
They range from tiny (a man who can't afford a dog) to VC backed with $50-100M invested.
Adrian Bowles
There are also some poseurs, so be careful
Marcia Kaufman
Watson is not "just Watson" . there is a very large and growing ecosystem developing around Watson. We profile some of these companies in the book. Also discuss how @welltok built its cognitive application based on Watson
Adrian Bowles
@dreasoning has a long history in the security arena, @bigML has an interesting platform @IPsoft Amelia is pretty interesting
Jean-Luc Chatelain
Don't get me started on the Watson hype :-) Good stuff but not unique. There are some good startup efforts out there but they are mostly engines as opposed to solution so will be gobbled up.
Adrian Bowles
@InformationCTO yes, we expect more M&A activity for sure
Dave Vellante
@InformationCTO I want to get you started - please weigh in!
Adrian Bowles
oh, and definitely look at Zeroth from @qualcomm - advanced neuromorphic HW in your handset
Dave Vellante
How big will Watson be for IBM?
Jean-Luc Chatelain
BTW...still lots of white space bringing GPUs in the cognitive computing space
Judith Hurwitz
I think it is important to remember that Watson is evolving and changing. But there are lots of other companies getting into the game and taking advantage of lessons learned
Adrian Bowles
@InformationCTO catch me later, will send our report on ML vendors
Dave Vellante
IBM is like the ice breaker - injecting momentum into the space
Jean-Luc Chatelain
won't take the bait :-) That's a chat to be had around one (or more) glass of wine!
Jeff Frick
@InformationCTO > Yes, we did a #theCUBE drive by at OpenPOWER Summit, co-located with GPU Tech Conf. Lots-O-Buzz
Jean-Luc Chatelain
@ajbowles Sure...you can always reach me at informationcto \at\\ gmail.com
Dave Vellante
Q3. Are machines replacing humans and if so where (and where not)?
Adrian Bowles
I have a list of humans I'd like to replace...
Adrian Bowles
most of the apps we look at in the book are augmenting intelligence, not replacing humans
Judith Hurwitz
I am a machine (just kidding). I think that machines augment humans. Humans can't ingest and make sense of all of the data needed to solve a problem
John Furrier
. @dvellante great question didn't this come up at the MIT event in London - the crowd conversation was here https://www.crowdcha...
Adrian Bowles
most of the replacement today is in robotics
John Furrier
. @jhurwitz how does augmented reality come into play with your themes in the book?
Bert Latamore
Any activity where actions can be anticipated such as driving, organizing information, etc., is goiing to be automated.
Dave Vellante
We talked about this extensively with the guys at #MIT #2MA cc: @erikbryn @amcafee
Adrian Bowles
not to minimize the impact though, there are jobs that will go away
Bert Latamore
Commercial jetliners already can land themselves, for instance.
Judith Hurwitz
augmenting reality is clearly part of the cognitive computing landscape..smarter cities, traffic mgt, etc.
Adrian Bowles
we've already seen jobs like travel agents disappear without cognitive, and there is some backlash.
Stuart Miniman
back to our #2MA discussions http://siliconangle.... - as @jhurwitz says, it's the areas when machines can augment/accelerate humans
Dave Vellante
Yes we learned from reading #2MA that the median income in the U.S. is dropping and computers are perhaps one reason why
Adrian Bowles
augmented reality fits with CC on input and output sides (allowing better human computer interfaces)
Jeff Frick
@jhurwitz > Perhaps not a machine, but people should be included in the internet of "things" - We are all things
Bert Latamore
Lots of jobs are going to go away. Automated vehicles means automated over the road trucks, for instance. Uber is already working to create self-driving taxis.
Bert Latamore
@JeffFrick Have you tried out Google Now? I just heard about it from Hilary Mason on SciFri. It analyzes data about you to recommend places and events that might interest you in your vicinity.
Marcia Kaufman
in medicine- physicians are challenged to keep up with new research and daily updates to important information about new treatments - so CC can assist but not replace the highly experienced physician
Tom Lounibos
Speed & Context...Cognitive systems (AI) are becoming the foundation of massively scalable correlation engines...that turn Big Data into Contextual Intelligence.
Dave Vellante
Q7. Will cognitive systems run in the cloud or live on prem?
Judith Hurwitz
I believe that most Cognitive Computing systems will be in the cloud.
Adrian Bowles
some systems are being offered both ways, and there are projects underway to crowdsource insights in the cloud
John Furrier
#hybridcloud this is huge; the bridge between cloud and onsite or onprem is huge issue bc the system needs to be smart to understand context without boundaries
John Furrier
Data without boundaries
Judith Hurwitz
companies may choose to keep a certain corpus of data in a private cloud
John Furrier
. @dvellante adding to the question is the real time nature of data and where that lives
Adrian Bowles
working with a client who wants to keep on prem for latency issues (Wall Street)
Dave Vellante
People are concerned about data movement and migration
Marcia Kaufman
Cognitive applications typically rely on big data and multiple sources of data. You need power and speed to bring all the data together...Cloud is important here
Jean-Luc Chatelain
I think it will be hybrid (some data not suited for travel) but I also think that it will embedded on the mobile edge for some use cases
Adrian Bowles
@InformationCTO yes, just wrote about putting CC in the handset, exchanging info with the "mother ship"
