#VMchatHow to Tell your Company Story@OliverRoll & @KathyKlotzGuest host a conversation on marketing and telling your brand story
Oliver Roll
So let’s a provocative question: Will CIO have jobs in 10 years? #VMchat ...
Bask Iyer
I hope not.. Want to be running my own business selling alcohol on a quiet beach to innocent tourists in Rio
John Furrier
. @oliverroll gr8 topic--no CIO will be the CFO boom!
Oliver Roll
I hear so many predictions that companies will no longer need a CIO.
Rodrigo Gazzaneo
@baskiyer you are most welcome to visit Rio! Summer Olympics coming soon!
Brian Katz
Why wouldn't they...a better question is how will their role change?
Rodrigo Gazzaneo
maybe not the CIO focused on internal operations only. Thoughts?
Jim @ CWPBIZ
@baskiyer Glad I wasn't taking a sip of water when I read that! Niiice one. Great plan, BTW.
Oliver Roll
So @baskiyer how will the role change? or will the role exist?
Bask Iyer
The CIO role is constantly changing and will continue to change.. I have said that we must be chameleon like or Madonna like and reinvent the role
Oliver Roll
Get specific, would you...
Brian Katz
@baskiyer SO we should expect to see you Vogue on campus :-)
Michael Thacker
@bmkatz I'm in the room and @baskiyer is actually vogue-ing.
Bask Iyer
The CEOs now are looking for business transformational leaders.. someone who can work without an agenda and across organizational boundaries
Oliver Roll
He's particularly good!
Brian Katz
@sfmikey @baskiyer Photos or it didn't happen
Oliver Roll
@bmkatz you believe us now?
Sai Charan T
@baskiyer IT's knowledge is critical: 1) If you collect customer data, & address privacy/security/data related issues. 2) If you want to analyze marketing data using email click/forward rates or social media info. #VMchat
Robin Matlock
Just met with a ~12 customers participating in an advisory board this am. They said that LOB is starting to turn back to central IT with more appetite, instead of less. they've tried to "go it alone" and are now returning to central IT for help! true???
Bask Iyer
Hey Robin... Why are you here :)... give me my budget back.. it is Robin our friendly CMO folks.
Bask Iyer
The pendulum does swing back and forth... It is our money Robin.. let us spend it well and get value.
Robin Matlock
I'm a LOB like many. I do see issues when marketing has solved w/ SaaS solutions and then struggles to integrate into corp systems.
Bask Iyer
Yes.. If LOB focusses on the business outcomes and the specialist focus on the solution, then we will have less of this issue..
Bask Iyer
But we should always collaborate.. I do have ideas on marketing and your team should have ideas on technology
Rodrigo Gazzaneo
need help protecting stranded data on #SaaS with corporate policies?
John Furrier
robin is in the house!
John Furrier
I agree that marketing will quickly adopt #devops ethos bc marketing cloud needs to standup fast with integrated workfo
Oliver Roll
Everyone’s talking about the tension in IT. Looking after traditional IT and innovating for the future? What’s your perspective?
Bask Iyer
There is a need to do both... and this creates a tension
Bask Iyer
I think there Maslow's hierarchy of needs in IT.. the email, network etc has to work
Then you can talk about strategy and cool things.
So get the basics done.. but don’t just stop with operations. Know when to be strategic and when to get operational
Oliver Roll
It's sounds straightforward. But I hear so many CIOs talking about having to put 100% into the basics?
Oliver Roll
So what's the solution?
John Furrier
Innovative IT is moving to #devops which drives the apps that's where the challenge is. Bask thoughts?
Bask Iyer
There is really no going back to "basics". The world has and is changing so much in technology-- we need to go forward
Bask Iyer
I am actually excited about the cloud.. you now can use this platform to offload a lot of infrastructure, email, payroll etc. and get time to get more strategic
Jim @ CWPBIZ
@baskiyer Redefining the basics (if I'm hearing you correctly)
John Furrier
the common theme is olderIT is being abstracted away to move to composite technologies and apps
Bask Iyer
In a way John.. but you are still accountable for the older IT.. it doesn't go away.. you need to manage it as well
Brian Katz
It's about compartmentalizing legacy IT and moving forward with agility with new platforms
Bask Iyer
You got it... !
Joe Baguley
Bask, now you've had a chance to settle in, what are your priorities for the first 12 months?
Bask Iyer
Show case how we use VMware tools within VMware to actually run the business.. authentic use cases from within
Rodrigo Gazzaneo
@baskiyer drinking your own champagne!
Bask Iyer
Push to the cloud and hybrid cloud and Mobile. mobile, mobile
Oliver Roll
I love the phrase you used. Drink our own champagne. So much nicer than dog food.
Oliver Roll
What have you learned from drinking VMware champagne?
John Furrier
Follow up question: what are your top 3 KPIs as CIOS?
Oliver Roll
So let's get back to the question about evolving roles. I spoke at an event recently and suggested that progressive companies will soon be organizing around business outcomes, not by departments. . Agree or disagree? #VMCha
Bask Iyer
Agree.. broadly... but we do need some specialists.. to play a good team game... we should all also learn to play our positions.
Oliver Roll
Talking about positions. I like your analogy of a tech employee to a person who works in a music store. Explain it for our audience. #VMchat
Bask Iyer
you mean the clapton thing?.. Oliver... quite simply, you can read all the books you want... you will never be as good as me as the CIO :))
Oliver Roll
That I agree with.
Oliver Roll
So you're basically saying that while everyone has an opinion on IT - you need specialists to get the job done.
Joe Baguley
We have to always be aware of Conway's Law in such discussions - http://en.wikipedia....
Jim @ CWPBIZ
Different notes create a melody. Different instruments produce different notes. Harmony requires coordination of talented musicians. (That's how I'm hearing the reference)
Keith Townsend - Light will overcome darkness
I think model works for service organizations but traditional back office organizations? I don't know if it scales. I'd have to hear the argument.
Bask Iyer
I remember Clint Eastwood saying something about opinions... but if I remember, it was not appropriate for business
