Buy Apple ?

Buy into storage services. But take it beyond file/ folder to structured/ unstructured data on the way to analytics.

Meaning... buy Box or Dropbox to start.

Apple is really in the same boat as their Platform 3 is evolving too.. look at Spotify putting a dent in iTunes

I think we have to have an Apple model for Cloud i.e. integrate it into our core offerings. Folks should buy arrays with xTB of cloud capacity built in... and a free on ramp. Ditto for backup.

p2 apps (orcl, sql etc) will use arrays mainly ... p3 sw-defined on commodity. both should be automated/self-service in a cloud.

I think its over for NetApp. I don't see how they make it. Not enough Cash to buy, not enough opex to innovate.

Pure is a dual controller block storage array. Clearly that one trick pony aint going to help them ride off to the sunset

like Nimble, i think they can get out... question is can they be 'the next great storage company' ? I don't think there will be another great storage company.

@jburton I think they will go public maybe not a threat but what about AWS? At $7-10B in rev say storage is $3billion of that..that is big player..what is your view

AWS is a big threat to everyone in tech. Much of that revenue i think is down market and in dev/test... but they are playing to win. Data suggests that through 2020 70% of infra will still be on-prem. Hybrid world.

no they are not. I see a lot of IT either splitting in two ... or popping up in the business - the business is not going to wait for IT. They have the dollars, they see the threat and they are not going to wait.

great question. lots of talk of emerging aka platform3 but the reality is the foundational stuff needs to be solidified - i think that is what this platform 2.5 is about

p2.5 is simply p3 principles applied to p2 technology. e.g. ScaleIO is block storage... but sw-defined running on commodity. the big difference with p3 is that the apps are new distributed scale-out ... agile dev, DevOps processes...

Making infrastructure capabilities easier for app developers consume is desperately needed.

Pivotal should be all over this with developers and cloudfoundry as engine of change

we, EMC, need to make the infra easier ... Pivotal help folks move to agile/devops.

The tools to monitor and manage P3 and the skills needed to operate these tools are in small supply. Slows down adoption greatly, but also leads biz to question viability

Cloud Foundry is aiming to provide the monitor & management. These apps are harder to write but easier to manage (Pets vs Cattle).

@jburton Agreed. Infrastructure industry needs to make functions easier. CF micro services is great way to expose them.

Many orgs are not prepared to consider the full stack (even if they should).

depends on what you are trying to write... also today, not widespread adoption of PaaS to make it simpler.

I still think we are fairly lame at getting women into senior positions but David Goulden has launched a 3 year "BHAG" for the management team to change all that. Exciting times.
