If Joe Tucci asked you to make one big move for EMC - what would it be - something gamechanging?
Tim Crawford
Buy into storage services. But take it beyond file/ folder to structured/ unstructured data on the way to analytics.
Tim Crawford
Meaning... buy Box or Dropbox to start.
John Furrier
Apple is really in the same boat as their Platform 3 is evolving too.. look at Spotify putting a dent in iTunes
Suhela Dighe
@jburton Would you consider application performance management companies?
John Furrier
@tcrawford I wouldn't think Box or Dropbox would be good deals makes EMC an app company - might confuse ecosystem imo
Jeremy Burton
I think we have to have an Apple model for Cloud i.e. integrate it into our core offerings. Folks should buy arrays with xTB of cloud capacity built in... and a free on ramp. Ditto for backup.
Bill Bunting
@tcrawford #Syncplicity could be that silver bullet if the cards were played right.
Jeremy Burton
right after Apple.
John Furrier
Love AWS business model generate tons of cash and deliver zero profits..
JP Morgenthal
I always said that the Federation should be delivering consumable private cloud services making it easier for IT to deliver AWS-style clouds
Tim Crawford
There is also a difference between what ppl will buy today vs. tomorrow. It will change. #maturity #perspective
Jeremy Burton
p2 apps (orcl, sql etc) will use arrays mainly ... p3 sw-defined on commodity. both should be automated/self-service in a cloud.
Rob Steele
without much of a portfolio or innovation, how long do you see NetApp and Pure lasting ?
Jeremy Burton
I think its over for NetApp. I don't see how they make it. Not enough Cash to buy, not enough opex to innovate.
Jeremy Burton
Pure is a dual controller block storage array. Clearly that one trick pony aint going to help them ride off to the sunset
Rob Steele
Love being an EMC partner ! Very exciting technologies coming out !
John Furrier
. @RobSteele former 3Par executive David Scott said he feels that Pure might have problems achieving escape velocity in this market. Do you agree?
Jeremy Burton
like Nimble, i think they can get out... question is can they be 'the next great storage company' ? I don't think there will be another great storage company.
Rob Steele
There is only "THE great storage company"
John Furrier
@jburton I think they will go public maybe not a threat but what about AWS? At $7-10B in rev say storage is $3billion of that..that is big player..what is your view
Rob Steele
@furrier they arent pushing an open agenda and have a big target on their back... Will be interesting
John Furrier
Interesting stat @guychurchward said on @theCUBE that emc engineering is like 95% software not hardware so they not just storage company anymore
Jeremy Burton
AWS is a big threat to everyone in tech. Much of that revenue i think is down market and in dev/test... but they are playing to win. Data suggests that through 2020 70% of infra will still be on-prem. Hybrid world.
Andrew Miller
Can we not mix Star Trek and Star Wars next year? ;-)
Rob Steele
why not? Best of both worlds ! ;)
Jeremy Burton
Blastphemy, I know. Am hoping to get Jon Landau and the Avatar guys back next year... i think they may be close to release.
Elaine Beare
@jburton Star Trek all the way!! :)
Jeremy Burton
gotta love the new star wars trailers tho;
John Furrier
best quote ever on @theCUBE "everything in Star Trek will be invented"
Jeremy Burton
Holodeck is on the RSA booth - Occulus Rift
Elaine Beare
@jburton I'm pure Star Trek - have never watched a Star Wars movie! :)
Mark Browne
Star Trek is dedicated to science mostly, Star Wars relies on the magic of the force mostly imho #EMCElect
Suhela Dighe
@DathBrun That's why I prefer Star Trek. #science rulez.
Ed Walsh
Is enterprise IT moving fast enough to support platform3 applications? Still see a lot of developer frustration with enterprise speed, and agility.
Jeremy Burton
no they are not. I see a lot of IT either splitting in two ... or popping up in the business - the business is not going to wait for IT. They have the dollars, they see the threat and they are not going to wait.
John Furrier
great question. lots of talk of emerging aka platform3 but the reality is the foundational stuff needs to be solidified - i think that is what this platform 2.5 is about
Jeremy Burton
p2.5 is simply p3 principles applied to p2 technology. e.g. ScaleIO is block storage... but sw-defined running on commodity. the big difference with p3 is that the apps are new distributed scale-out ... agile dev, DevOps processes...
Ed Walsh
Making infrastructure capabilities easier for app developers consume is desperately needed.
John Furrier
Pivotal should be all over this with developers and cloudfoundry as engine of change
Jeremy Burton
we, EMC, need to make the infra easier ... Pivotal help folks move to agile/devops.
JP Morgenthal
The tools to monitor and manage P3 and the skills needed to operate these tools are in small supply. Slows down adoption greatly, but also leads biz to question viability
Jeremy Burton
Cloud Foundry is aiming to provide the monitor & management. These apps are harder to write but easier to manage (Pets vs Cattle).
Ed Walsh
@jburton Agreed. Infrastructure industry needs to make functions easier. CF micro services is great way to expose them.
Ed Walsh
@jpmorgenthal The tools that exist to today focus on either app or infrastructure not full stack.
JP Morgenthal
@jburton Not sure I buy into the "harder to write" argument. I find that PaaS makes it easier to write and deploy apps
Tim Crawford
Many orgs are not prepared to consider the full stack (even if they should).
Jeremy Burton
depends on what you are trying to write... also today, not widespread adoption of PaaS to make it simpler.
John Furrier
EMC has tons of women in tech talent..whats your vision for #WiT
Jeremy Burton
we need tons more.
Jeremy Burton
I still think we are fairly lame at getting women into senior positions but David Goulden has launched a 3 year "BHAG" for the management team to change all that. Exciting times.
