#awsreinventAWS re:Invent 2015 PreviewThe latest from the cloud crowd
John Furrier
AWS, Alibaba, Google continue to chew up public cloud IaaS and PaaS space. Microsoft gains share as well but comes down to earth. IBM finding its footing? True or False. Comment
ConsumingML
IaaS war, over. PaaS - just about over. SaaS - early innings. $MSFT and $IBM bring their software portfolios to bare.
ConsumingML
crazy prediction, $AMZN buys $IBM. Sells off GTS, GBS and keeps software and cloud to round out SaaS portfolio.
John Furrier
I think #Azure is sandbagging their numbers but they are hiding the ball from the market so who knows.
John Furrier
@Grant_Case IBM #AWS partnership should be in place look what #vmware did; IBM could punt cloudfoundry and go all in on AWS and Jassy's team
ConsumingML
Strategic ?, Remove IaaS lead. Why would anyone partner with $AMZN. They have knifed every comp and industry? From S/W to Media to Groceries to Retail to H/W. Is there a biz there not in or won't get in? Why I'm bullish on $MSFT and $IBM.
ConsumingML
agree on #Azure. They are everywhere now.
ConsumingML
Ultimately, $AMZN has not been an honest broker w/customers and partners. The big lead means they can be price makers now, but many customers waiting for a reasonable alt, IF it materializes.
Keith Townsend - Light will overcome darkness
@Grant_Case That's not too Crazy. My prediction was $AMZN buys $HPE for the edge support capabilities. Meg has done most of the hard work of divesting.
John Furrier
AWS and HPE that would be interesting
John Furrier
How will #AWS take its early lead in serverless (with Lambda) into broader usage? There are a growing number of open source options for serverless which would be attractive to developers which are the most relevant?
Subbu Allamaraju
Open source options don't count as much due to the strong role of service ecosystem. See (3) on https://m.subbu.org/... (don't mean to plug)
yaron haviv
most FaaS r docker/k8s add-ons, not a self-service platform (logging, security, data,..) address dev not ops
John Furrier
@sallamar great article on serverless!!!
Keith Townsend - Light will overcome darkness
I did a #CTODailyDose on this topic. to @yaronhaviv point. Open Source solutions address FaaS but not Serverless. Big debate in the CNCF Serverless working group as to what's Serverless.
Keith Townsend - Light will overcome darkness
Leaves opportunity for multi-cloud solutions. I don't believe AWS has won Serverless. Far from it. CF isn't FaaS but it is serverless when operated by someone else.
John Furrier
Where do you see the value that cloud creates for customers in the next 24 months #cloud ?
Subbu Allamaraju
agility from the service ecosystem, and rapid second-order architecture changes (thereby clearing tech debt)
ConsumingML
@sallamar @Furrier agree on clearing tech debt. Born on Cloud apps are already here. Next wave, migration of existing apps.
Muddu Sudhakar
Legacy SaaS applications will be disrupted by Cloud, Micro-services, Serverless and AI/ML
John Furrier
90 per cent of machine-learning algorithms and their code are now available open source through various communities (e.g. TensorFlow, Scikit Learn, H2O and Weka). True of False. Comment
ConsumingML
True - higher actually w/ exceptions around specific financial apps. All general purpose algos in OS. Unless trading on an exchange, you are using Open Source.
Subbu Allamaraju
Either open source, or commoditized via services on public clouds
yaron haviv
right, but the challenge is getting the learned models and acting on it
John Furrier
Serverless computing will come to mainstream private cloud. True or False. Comment.
Subbu Allamaraju
False. Adoption and success of serverless patterns depend almost entirely on the strength of the ecosystem that data centers lack.
John Furrier
@sallamar I'm waffling on this bc I don't have enough insight yet @stu does insight; my opinion isn't formed yet
Subbu Allamaraju
My observation at Expedia is that Lamba's growth is almost entirely due to the power of the ecosystem of services, which is one of the key points in https://m.subbu.org/...
Stuart Miniman
#serverless will definitely be useful for edge applications. Currently don’t see use case for general data center usage
yaron haviv
DIY FaaS is not #Serverless, u need a full self-service platform + data services like @iguazio todo on-prem/edge serverless @nuclioio
John Furrier
Blockchain will be as fundamental to digital infrastructure as TCP/IP was to the Internet. De-centralized & Distributed architectures will emerge in 2018 and become a lynchpin of application advanced models by 2020.
Subbu Allamaraju
False. Not as fundamental as TCP/IP.
John Furrier
@sallamar I'm True on this one. Lets debate :-) love this decentralized trend but I'm biased
Subbu Allamaraju
It may be nice building block for certain kinds of problems, but not as fundamental as TCP/IP. TCP/IP is like Oxygen for the Internet.
John Furrier
@rossrader said to me on my timeline:
"I’ve long said that blockchain is the first new piece of real internet infrastructure since http. Not quite true - things like WebRTC and much more - but this feels bigger somehow"
John Furrier
@sallamar I don't think #blockchain is an abstraction ontop of the internet but part of the infra
Donald C. Klein
Still waiting to see broadly adopted use cases (beyond crypto) where distributed apps and shared ledger infrastructure trumps centralized app structures. But there are emerging signs: supply chain, media, gov records ...
John Furrier
Big Data in the Public Cloud continues to grow rapidly and becomes a bigger story. True or False. Comment
Subbu Allamaraju
True. Data gravity is shifting rapidly.
John Furrier
@sallamar This was the question / prediction that was easy to give confidence :-)
ConsumingML
- Not so much a bigger story, but continuing one. Separation of storage and compute helps data move to the cloud.
yaron haviv
much data (iot, video) start and will stay at the edge, driving the intelligent (cloud) edge
John Furrier
What do you see happening to the "on-premises only" vendors? And what about the other cloud vendors? What are the challenges each will face?
Subbu Allamaraju
unless the vendors are in for the long haul, threats are not imminent. There is still enough FUD about public clouds to fuel on-prem consumption. It is declining, but won't go away entirely.
ConsumingML
industry dependent. Financial - still 90% on-prem w/no desire to move. Media / Entertainment - nothing but cloud.
Muddu Sudhakar
Aws, Azure, GCP will offer their clouds for On-prem - effectively offering hybrid cloud options
John Furrier
AWS cloud competitors are all touting and claiming massive cloud growth. Is it really cloud growth or just other legacy products bundled with cloud? How do customers know what "real" cloud is?
ConsumingML
depends on your definition of cloud. #AWS tells you massive scale w/ elasticity is cloud. CIO, VP, & Company Directors tell you its just the ability to not run on-prem.
Muddu Sudhakar
Legacy apps and infrastructure spend is going towards cloud vendors; which is driving growth for all of them;
Muddu Sudhakar
The revenue should be defined as Cloud+SaaS; for example, Microsoft is claiming SaaS apps (Office 365, Exchange 365 etc) revenue in Cloud business; And Google is including SaaS apps/docs revenue in GCP; \
John Furrier
there is multiple clouds developing #SaaS clouds like from ISVs and companies like Oracle so this is an interesting question to flesh out. Is there a thing as a "single cloud"
Keith Townsend - Light will overcome darkness
AWS re:Invent prediction: AWS will go further into the edge. Snowball Edge is just precursor to Amazon's data center ambitions. I'm fully expecting a more robust HCI solution to add compute capacity at the edge.
Keith Townsend - Light will overcome darkness
To further this concept, AWS will need to figure out logistics for servicing the edge. How do you service the snowball edge HCI solution out in a wind farm? You know who is good at that? HPE/Unisys/etc. There will be an acquisition as a result.
John Furrier
I think that AWS will start using their own cloud more for #iot then rollout more services next year after they figure it out internally first
yaron haviv
HCI is old news, just bare-metal containers/serverless w file, S3, DynamoDB, Kinesis.. (like @iguazio)
