Switching gears now to VSm - how do you define Value Stream Management?
Marc Hornbeek, DevOps_the_Gray esq.
@DEVOVSM is a supervisory layer of a DevOps blueprint with capability to supports end-to-end orchestration, monitoring and governance over one or more CI/CD pipelines.PSINST
BMK
- the onething that I noticed, not everyone is aware of end-end processes, people involved and flow. It is important to get this visibility
Lavanya Arul
Extremely helpful. Especially to identify the pain points.helps to increase the productivity.
Romnick Acabado
A management approach that focuses on the end-to-end flow of customers, their challenges, and ideas (as input) to target business value (as output) through best practices and by the elimination of wasted time and resources. #UpskillingVSM
Feisal Ismail
Visualization and Optimization of how "things" get done.
BMK
- IMHO there are people with different understanding within the same enterprise, organization. It is important to map-out the understanding and thats what we do
RoseDyson
I have been using VS in operations and find it very helpful. But... it is a bit tricky to get good subscription. The data that can be collected is amazing...

I think the first steps to managing a value stream...is to map it out with your teams and talk about how we can remove waste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwasYEJ07Xo&.....

A short, practical demonstration of how to create a value stream map. I will use nothing more than my bare hands, post-it notes, some paper and a pen to demo...

example like how to request security certs for applications hosted, renewal from ticket to process to prod drop - is interesting area to explore :) #DevSecOps

DevOps Value Stream Mapping – A Box Score Based Approach
Digital Transformation is driving evolution of new business models. With rapid expansion of technology landscape, enterprises are reinventing their business strategy, realigning their existing processes and redefining delivery of customer value.

- The fact most of us know about the flow without knowing that is VSM. That is how I learned as well :)

The latest hottest trend in enterprise software delivery is Value Stream Management (VSM). But wait, isn't VSM an acronym for Value Stream Mapping?
Feisal Ismail
What, in your opinion, are the top area(s) that could benefit from VSM in the modern IT Orgn? Where is best to start?
RoseDyson
I find easier to see bottlenecks and opportunity for improvements when I draw a VS. Management loves it as they can see what is happening.
Romnick Acabado
It will be great to start with specific product that which is visible but with manageable risk. The benefits is that you will be able to build things right and build the right things. You will be able to improve the end to end flow from idea to business value realization.
Paul Colmer #DevOps πŸŽΈβ˜οΈπŸ›°οΈπŸš€πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί
Every industry and every business area can gain value from VSM. It allows you to understand the flow of information and value, and help your teams identify and talk about forms of waste....#TheDigitalCoach
Biswajit Mohapatra
VSM is all about continuous improvement and evolution as we introduce changes to our value delivery flow. The starting point is to assess the current state, find gaps, calculate gains and incrementally build upon.
RoseDyson
I find the best way to show the value of VSM is with any onboarding activity, where there are so many activities, tools, data and people interconnected. Easy to loose track.

Define governance policies and use VSM to automate them
BMK
@DEVOPSINST - I am fan of Muda, Muri, Mura - example how many variations we have in our processes, how many forms to get the single thing done in your organizations - a good start

If DevOps was a movie, what would it be and why?
Marc Hornbeek, DevOps_the_Gray esq.
Camelot – the quest for the holy grail of continuous improvement requires collaborative efforts of people (knights of the round table), process (laws of Camelot) and technology (the sword Excalibur)
Paul Colmer #DevOps πŸŽΈβ˜οΈπŸ›°οΈπŸš€πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί
I think it depends on the organisation. In many cases it tends to be a horror movie...maybe the Texas Chainsaw Massacre...#TheDigitalCoach πŸ˜‚
Romnick Acabado
Avengers Endgame or maybe Whiplash - as we talk about antifragility and excellence. :)
RoseDyson
It would be feel good move with a bit of war strategy, comedy and politics.

A-Team! I love it when a plan comes together!! A diverse team with different skillsets and value contribution with the same objective/goals

it is MIB, Avengers and also any colorful Bollywood dance as well

Anyone who has used Kanban to optimize the value stream flow? What are your learnings related to it? I would like to learn more! :) #UpskillingVSM
Paul Colmer #DevOps πŸŽΈβ˜οΈπŸ›°οΈπŸš€πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί
I've used Atlassian JIRA to create stories and features and measured how they flow through the development value stream. You can use cumulative flow diagrams to understand where you may need to optimise.
Marc Hornbeek, DevOps_the_Gray esq.
I have an DevOps Assessment sevice using a seven step alignment blueprint that leads organizations to focus on the specific waste that will best serve their business goals for the next leg in the journey of a specific organization.
Paul Colmer #DevOps πŸŽΈβ˜οΈπŸ›°οΈπŸš€πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί
You can also do the same with a physical Kanban, but it becomes very manual to measure.
RoseDyson
KanBan is good anywhere.

@DigitalColmer i am fully in favourable for physical kanban. Ofcos it ends up as a lot manual work, but helps to visualise... Great way to start with..

Improved collaboration and painted the big picture.
Marc Hornbeek, DevOps_the_Gray esq.
I use Kanban as an implementation management tool while in the "realize" phase of the Seven Step Transformation process
Paul Colmer #DevOps πŸŽΈβ˜οΈπŸ›°οΈπŸš€πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί
I use Kanban to manage all the work for small, medium and large initiatives. The most important thing is to visualise ALL the work...including people development activities.

Burnout is a big problem these days. What tips do you have to prevent it?
Marc Hornbeek, DevOps_the_Gray esq.
Every day take time to eat a healthy meal, exercise, and connect with your social network
Romnick Acabado
Act of kindness everyday, positivity, know your purpose and whys, proper time management, stress management, self-control, self-care and healthy habits (exercise, get plenty of sleep, meditation, connect with your love ones
RoseDyson
I Schedule time every day to do things that energises me, even if just 1 hr a day. I schedule time for short walks, sometimes I combine walking and reading with audible,
Feisal Ismail
Establish several principles for your operational model. I would suggest Respect to be up there somewhere. Respect people and their time.
RoseDyson
I work much better if I am refreshed and focused.
RoseDyson
I am also a strong believer of mindful meditation, there are many good videos on YouTube. I like Marisa Peer (I had to allow time to understand her style) and Steve Covey (I like his pragmatic style).
