IOTanalytics

IoT and Data Analytics
The Internet of Things (IoT) is about leveraging big data and analytics. A look inside.
Rayno
Q5 Let's go out 5-10 years on #IoT. What's the vision? Everything is smarter? Our house runs itself? Our cars drive themselves? And the government knows everything?
dana blouin
They know everything already, BTW they have some questions for you.....
Tate Cantrell
Stretching 5 years to 30 years, IoT becomes more than tech. #IoTanalytics help to build a common good #philosophy
dana blouin
But to be serious, I see the IoT in 5 years as still growing, 10 years it facilitates context to everything we interact with, it will be pervasive.
Automotive IT News
Only 5-10 years out, no, [dangerous] humans still behind the wheel mostly, but connected cars will increase safety & reduce fuel consumption & CO2 emissions.
Tate Cantrell
we are leading to a world super computer, and with that power comes great responsibility #PeterParker
Automotive IT News
Depends on which government you mean... data privacy laws favor the government a bit less in #Iceland and #Germany - favors the free press & enterprises more than the US
Kim Singletary
#IoT pervasive giving transparency to cost of goods, energy and effort. For consumers though privacy is at peril.
dana blouin
@ksingletary I am not sure its at peril, or just needs to be redefined a bit...
Rayno
@danablouin I can answer all the questions
Kevin Donahue
like most other technologies the benefits will come from applications we cant imagine. Who could have predicted the cell phone industry would effectively remove the desire for people to talk on the phone?
Rayno
So #IoT is about building one huge distributed computer that can know everything. And tell you what to do.
Tate Cantrell
@ksingletary categorization of data is super important and will allow coordinated edge/core infrastructure development
Rayno
@TheIoTGuy very true. Nobody knew in 1980 that we'd end up spending our lives texting
Tate Cantrell
remember #IoT is noise without analytics.
dana blouin
I wouldn't say that, but distributed computing in clusters perhaps, it will know more, it won't tell you what to do, but it will defiantly give you suggestions and predict your desire based off pervious behavior.
Tate Cantrell
the social fabric that is being woven now will be sewn together by the nextgen via #IoT. we won't recognize it.
Kevin Donahue
I can see how individual IoT data like home energy efficiency, mobile data, and car/telematics data can provide near real time insight into total energy usage.
Rayno
@TheIoTGuy Yes, like, I'd like to know how much energy my computers and TVs use when my kids leave them all on
Kim Singletary
Default 'plug n play' for #IoT needs to be changed, allowing for kill switch and clear data capture details to be addressed
Tate Cantrell
@ksingletary i agree with the opt out. but in the future opting out may make you more identifiable in a strange way.
Kim Singletary
@tate8tech Yes, a potential problem, an indicator of a non-conformist? More reasons to have these conversations and educate early and to look at broader policy issues
Tate Cantrell
@ksingletary definitely. philosophy will find its way back into technology. been a long time since aristotle.
Rayno
@tate8tech. How would you defined Internet of Things #IoT? What does it mean to you?
Tate Cantrell
#IoTanalytics is to #IoT what a symphony is to noise
Tate Cantrell
IoT has the potential to change everything-from how our coffee is brewed to how the lights go out at night. Requires #IoTanalytics
Tate Cantrell
There will be so much more #data created, finding efficient way to process and use/commercialize findings will be key #IoTanalytics
Rayno
I would like to know how it changes how my coffee is brewed.
Tate Cantrell
with #IoTanalytics it will be the way you want it. Not just better for the masses...
Rayno
Okay, so in a sense it has the power to add automated intelligence and personalization. Yes?
Kim Singletary
#IoT will provide more granular ways of being able to manipulate, manage and abstract data from diverse sensors
Craig Sowell
IoT is about the instrumentation of everything across a system... sensors that connect to all parts of a car is a good example - the entire system connected
Tate Cantrell
Yes. IoT delivers the data. #IoTanalytics helps create the automation and the personalization. But takes #power.
Rayno
Thanks Kim. Good description.
Tate Cantrell
as @ksingletary points out, the data will come from sources we aren't even aware of.
Craig Sowell
#IoTanalytics as a CMO it means I have more data then ever to work with ... so now I must figure out how to drive real intelligence from it.
Kevin Donahue
I tend to take an enterprise view of the potential of IoT. I don't need things in my house to talk. Any thoughts?
dana blouin
@TheIoTGuy I would disagree, I want the things in my home to talk to each other and to me.
Rayno
True, data overload is a challenge.
Craig Sowell
I think we need to accept #IoTanalytics as becoming a new normal and it will intersect our lives both at work and at home. It is how we will connect with technology. Think of smart watches and the ability to track your health in ways you never could.
Craig Sowell
@danablouin I agree.. some help at home would be nice!
Kevin Donahue
@danablouin I'm sure that is coming but I think the benefits to the enterprise are much more tangible near term than consumer applications
dana blouin
@TheIoTGuy I think there is bigger payoff in the enterprise but I see the consumer side as the more tangible IoT application right now.
Rayno
Q4 (or something) @tate8tech Lots of questions about scale here. Tell us the key requirements to scale to absorb all this data #IoT
Tate Cantrell
one area where sustainable solutions are required are at the datacenter.
Tate Cantrell
#Energy might be the biggest issue, certainly the biggest one no one is really talking about #IoTanalytics
Rayno
@tate8tech yes it seems the energy consumption could be massive
Tate Cantrell
Just at tip of the #IoTiceberg. Now have #data on just about everything. People need to start seeing data differently. #IoTanalytics
Rayno
We regularly hear that energy is 20-30% of #datacenter costs. Is that about right? #IoT
dana blouin
@tate8tech do you think IoT will have the same impact on the data center that virtulization has?
Tate Cantrell
it can go much higher where the demand is limited. bmw saved 82% @verneglobal on energy alone
Tate Cantrell
@danablouin IoT will create massive growth first. but also enable smarter decisions at the data center layer
Tate Cantrell
@danablouin IoT data has natural resiliency built in. Why overbuild your #datacenter? Doors are open for the innovators. #IoTanalytics
Tate Cantrell
@danablouin the savings opportunities are substantial for #hpc enabled machines and #hpc tech will drive #IoTanalytics
Kevin Donahue
An industry standard distributed application architecture that accommodates everything from sensors, mobile, web, enterprise, etc.
Rayno
Yes @IoTguy. Who's working on that?
