EMC Hybrid Cloud
Let’s discuss EMC IT’s journey to the Federation Enterprise Hybrid Cloud with EMC IT experts.
Steven Carr
Thank you everyone for participating! If you don't see an answer to your question below, or you missed your chance to ask one, our experts are continuing this conversation for 2 weeks, here: http://bit.ly/1DzK4o...

Karen Webb
I'll start - why did EMC IT move to the cloud?
kenneth paul
A few of the reasons were to take advantage of the speed of deployment, the reduction in risk, and the ability to increase utilization
Steven Carr
Were these advantages at the cost of sacrifice somewhere else?
Mike Norris
the key for use was to pick a few configurations to standardize on so we could accelerate automation
kenneth paul
Not really. Or at least I would not call it a sacrifice. More of a change in the way the org does business
Karen Webb
So what changed?
Sudeep Shrivastava
how does this help business, are they getting benefits like agility and flexibility
kenneth paul
At the end of the day I think we've been able to shift more resources away from firefighting and towards more important business projects
Mike Norris
and as an org we needed to ficus on services - the unification of the piece parts
kenneth paul
@subahe Absolutely. Since the objects, or services, we deliver are all from a standard library you gain better/consistent products. Since it is all automated toy can leverage policy systems to direct workflow
kenneth paul
One thing that changed, or needed to change, was the approach to designing and building this. We moved away from a traditional waterfall approach to more of an agile methodology
Mike Norris
yes sudeep the key benefit to the business is speed and quickness in changes to IAAS
Roberto Araujo ☮
Hi all, what are some of the benefits of moving to a cloud solution? Implementing an SDDC?
kenneth paul
Since everything is controlled via software, and exposed via an API, you can leverage the benefits of good development practices (SDLC) to mature you infrastructure
Mike Norris
key benefit of SDDC is acceleration of out automation efforts - once infrastructure is addressable programmatically we can integrate together for more and more complex scenarios
kenneth paul
In the private cloud you drive up utilization rates, in the hybrid you can increase deployment velocity
Roberto Araujo ☮
I'm highly interested on making the move, how can I work with EMC, and leverage their experience, to make my own journey to the cloud?
kenneth paul
If you are at the show I'd try to find the Federated Enterprise Hybrid Cloud folks, or find the team on emc.com.
Roberto Araujo ☮
@kenpaul unfortunately I'm only following this virtually
Karen Webb
How can customers leverage EMC IT's experience?
kenneth paul
Check out the IT Proven microsite on EMC.com for a variety of whitepapers and videos. Or ping us on twitther
kenneth paul
That would be "twitter" #fatfinger
Steven Carr
Here is a great video w/ @MikeNorris26 discussing EHC: http://www.emc.com/c...
Roberto Araujo ☮
@_StevenCarr thanks for sharing Steven!
Steven Carr
As we near the end of the chat, what is the biggest mistake an IT org can make when moving to the cloud?
kenneth paul
Not embracing the change and understanding what a positive impact it will have. The term "cloud" may fade away but the principles behind things like SDDC and their ability to support DevOps and next gen apps, are essential to your business
kenneth paul
And remember - it's not all about technology, although it plays a key role. It's as much about people and process as well!
Steven Carr
AND it's not merely a buzz word anymore, we can embrace the concept but we have to embrace the change too
Karen Webb
What applications does EMC IT have in the cloud?
kenneth paul
We built our entire SAP infrastructure internally following the best practices on the private cloud, and our VDI environment is all hosted on the private cloud. We've support pre-sales demos in the hybrid as well as dev VM creation.
kenneth paul
We also have a DBaaS offering as well as PaaS offerings internally. From the public cloud perspective we use traditional SaaS offerings for things like T&E and Sales support

this blog talks about some lessons learned on EMC's own journey to the EHC. What advice would you give to an organization ready to make the leap?
Roberto Araujo ☮
Great Hybrid Cloud resource!
Karen Webb
How does an organization move from a dedicated physical environment to one based on the cloud?
Mike Norris
it is a journey but starts with virtualization , then automation - roles and process changes are also important
kenneth paul
I like to think of the cloud as based on the tenets from the NIST definition so from that perspective fine the pooling, self service, or measured service items that make sense. Avoid purpose built point solutions in your designs!
Mike Norris
So no snowflakes Ken
kenneth paul
Correct. It seemed like a good idea long ago, but no more one-off designs
kenneth paul
In order to keep pace with today's business there is no way you can effectively churn out physical systems in a timely or cost effective manner.
kenneth paul
Also, evaluate your apps, migrate only what makes sense and improves your business. You can leverage some of the NSX features to bridge the gap, and ViPR and Vplex to help with the storage
Steven Carr
So not all of a legacy infrastructure needs to be migrated over?
kenneth paul
@_StevenCarr - No, I'd only move things where you can gain a positive impact on the business or IT. If a legacy app really can't take advantage of the SDDC then maybe it is best where it is.
Sudeep Shrivastava
What is the most basic thing that an IT organisation needs before going for a public cloud service?
kenneth paul
Understanding the workload and the risk profile. Is it cost effective first, then is it secure, and also is it functionally feasible
kenneth paul
Also, make sure you understand the conditions of service that the provider offers, like SLA's and hidden costs
Steven Carr
@kenpaul what realization could an organization have that deters them away from a public cloud solution?
kenneth paul
That is is not always cheaper in the public cloud based on the services that you are getting against what you expect. If it seems like its too good to be true it probably is ;)
Steven Carr
That makes sense @kenpaul. Does an organization normally need more manpower when moving to EHC?
kenneth paul
@_StevenCarr - No. Just a re-focus of efforts. We've maintained a relatively flat headcount thru the virtualization journey and I expect that to continue with the cloud. We are able to shift more folks from unplanned work and break/fix to driving value
Steven Carr
Let’s meet the experts that are happy to share best practices and lessons learned while making the journey to the Federation Enterprise Hybrid Cloud.
Steven Carr
@mikenorris26 is responsible for leading EMC IT’s Cloud Platform Team. During Mike’s 7 years at EMC his team has achieved high degrees of virtualization (95%) and has transformed the IT hosting infrastructure into a Hybrid Cloud environment.
Steven Carr
@kenpaul is the Lead systems architect for EMC Propel SAP project & lead architect for the Atlas cloud platform program. With this team, he leads platform strategy & engineering efforts in IT to virtualize systems, network, and storage infrastructure.
kenneth paul
Hi Steven, glad to be here!
