Dialogue around keeping innovation alive in Silicon Valley
Oliver Roll
@furrier John, which of the tech trends discussed did you find most interesting?
John Furrier
I thought the cyber and policy issues were huge and we love Bitcoin too
John Furrier
I think that cloud is huge @psonsini just wrote this..cloud is legit http://techcrunch.co...
How Cloud Startups Are Changing The Face Of Innovation | TechCrunch
After more than a decade of hype and billions of dollars of value creation, it would be reasonable to expect investors to start losing interest in..
Oliver Roll
Yup - the Bitcoin discussion was fascinating. Lots of unknowns - but in Marc's words - "the single biggest disruption to the financial industry"
John Furrier
Internet of Things #IoT and sensor networks are huge
Christian Bateman
@furrier I am not sure the current discussion around the #IoT is really the right one...
Christian Bateman
@furrier To quote Indiana Jones... "they are digging in the wrong place." Big opportunity n my view is that once these 'things' are connected, how do we secure them.
CrowdFather
@furrier I read that article and @psonsini is right on cloud is #bigboy #biggirl business not for the rookie #brogrammers
Jeff Frick
on Bitcoin, what's the lead value? Place to hold value, method to exchange value, cash economy alternative, or speculative market?
John Furrier
@Chris_Bateman share more on your opinion - I like to hear more
Crowd Captain
@Chris_Bateman @furrier "cloud is the engine room" big data is the decks and humans are the passengers - #IoT is the glue across all
Jeff Frick
@Chris_Bateman And doesn't the IoT set off a whole new round of infrastructure innovation to support it?
Oliver Roll
The AI trend that Hennessy brought up is the most fascinating to me. When tech has common sense and can truly reason like a human. The test is called the Turing test - a human judge engaging in a conversation with a human and a machine and deciding
Christian Bateman
@furrier Right now as much of my life is analog as is digital. For example, my home infrastructure is for the most part analog - Imagine if this is all digital and connected, now I have to worry about securing all of these things!
Jeff Frick
As I'm sending my oldest off to college, seems that the Education systems are a bit lagging on the innovation front.
Oliver Roll
which he/she is talking to. If the computer can fool the human that's true AI. Watson and Siri are on the right path - but still so much to go
Christian Bateman
@furrier I can not keep up with security now as a consumer. Am I installing patches to my toaster and toilet? A solution to secure all of these connected things needs to emerge.
Jeff Frick
- Humanization of computing - how much more CPU horsepower to process that much more information and nuance the decision making. Was wondering this when watching the new Google Self Driving car.
Louis Cheng
@furrier IoT will have broad implications since it assumes an always on connection. How will the three major wireless carriers adjust? Raise or lower prices as we become accustomed instant access?
Jeff Frick
@JeffFrick How would the $GOOG car react if you rolled a bowling ball in front of it, as opposed to a tennis ball, or a skateboard. Significant difference in reaction required.
rogertfortier
@Cheng_Louis @JeffFrick and I'm curious - are we talling IoT or IoE because ones a trend and ones a marketing campaign
Eloy Ontiveros
@Cheng_Louis @furrier Will new carriers emerge to take on the brunt of data flowing back and forth between "smart" devices and home base?
Christian Bateman
@eloyont What about connectivity as a feature model that Amazon introduced with Kindles? Connectivity should be assumed in the future...
Jeff Frick
with younger generation, does presumption of cloud service availability also come with presumption of security? Don't think they even consider privacy, and at some level, don't even care (they have been sharing everything for some time)
Jeff Frick
@rogertfortier I consider one a subset of the other.
Eloy Ontiveros
@Chris_Bateman Makes sense for Google considering the acquisition of Nest. I can see it working for Apple and others as well interested in the connected home.
Jeff Frick
- Long way to go. I asked Siri to shut down the phone, power off, turn off, etc., and She just kept playing the same song for me over and over.
Louis Cheng
@Chris_Bateman @eloyont - It'll take a major vendor with lots of cash to provide an alternative to the wireless carriers. Google's trying to tackle it with free wifi and fiber. Apple should jump in too since their biz depends on connected users
Christian Bateman
@Cheng_Louis Old networks become new again... abandoned spectrum becomes free?
Jeff Frick
-> The other thing we didn't discuss is the Rock Star founder e.g. Steve Jobs (RIP). Seems like a very important component to the Valley ecosystem, & successful companies for that matter
Christian Bateman
@JeffFrick Who is the new Jobs? Musk? Levie?
John Furrier
Ok the Women in Tech question - Are we doomed or we making progress with women in the technology field?
Oliver Roll
Mixed opinions on this one. Overall tech hasn't made much headway. Less than 20% of tech undergrads are women. Hennessy talked about needed to reach all the way back into the system in the early school years to address this.
Oliver Roll
Tucci talked about the importance of role models - that in life you tend to look up to others. And the signs of progress with leaders like Rometty, Meyer, Whitman as tech CEOs.
Paul Chapman
this is a little geography based - we see a bigger pipeline of Women for positions in other geographies than in SV - still lower than male counterparts
rogertfortier
curious if the women in tech debate focuses on women involved in tech (IT, engineering) or simply @ tech companies?
John Furrier
I think there is more progress than people think but the high priests of tech (males) need to lighten up and realize women are everywhere
Jeff Frick
@oliverroll But there are more and more high profile women doing fantastic thing. As stated, Role Models are super important.
Oliver Roll
Dewalt spoke most powerfully about this one. The power of the ying and yang of diversity being critical for future business success. Seems like FireEye have an extremely diverse leadership team.
Paul Chapman
once hired there is data that shows women are doing well - it is the pipeline that is part of the problem
Christian Bateman
@oliverroll It can also be traced back to a bigger issue. Overall US has much to do in how it views women in the workforce. We could start as a country by offering paid maternity leave.
Rupa Dachere
@PaulChapmanVM Incorrect. Retention is a big issue, as is advancement. Check out studies by the Anita Borg Institue and NCWIT
Paul Chapman
@oliverroll diversity is key - male / female / culture / age / geography
Rupa Dachere
google just released their diversity numbers. 17% women in technical roles.
Christian Bateman
@PaulChapmanVM @oliverroll +1 on Paul's comment. Issue is diversity
Paul Chapman
@Chris_Bateman agreed we have a study that showed in some countries the work life balance was more important than a job promotion. e.g not being promoted to take on more responsibility was a choice - this should not been seen as unequal treatment
rogertfortier
I feel like there's an uptick in women CIOs which speaks to their management and tech savvy. They get the tech and the people part of the job #important
Paul Chapman
would be good to understand the specific roles in IT that are being referred to when % are quoted - we see less in operational (network storage) roles and more in PM/BA/Development roles
Jeff Frick
@rogertfortier We've had a number on theCUBE including @SheilaJordan90 & @StoddardCA
rogertfortier
@JeffFrick i'm sure. and the numbers will only grow. many amazing women in Silicon Valley IT.
Rupa Dachere
@PaulChapmanVM PM is different from BA is different from developer. No company has divulged this info clearly yet.
John Furrier
I love this thread - computer science is changing in definition; more women involved bc tech is not just male oriented anymore; it's more and broader
Jessie Evans
@Chris_Bateman Yes to better maternity leave. US is in the dark ages re:benefits. And formal on-boarding/peer mentoring once women (or men for paternity leave) come back into the work place would go a long way in not 'losing' women after mat leaves.
Christian Bateman
Onsite Childcare... there is a benefit parents can all get behind. How many amazing women leave the workforce in the valley because of the cost of childcare.
