Was anybody able to check out the Bird of a Feather Cloud Foundry talk last night?
Lisa-Marie Namphy
Bird of a feather? Was there only one bird there? Wow - and I'd heard CF was all the rage! ;) (Kidding.... no #hatemail pleeze! ;)
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
Birds of a Feather can be found on the schedule page http://www.socallinu... at the bottom
haley carriere
@HPCloudAngel I'm hoping there was more than one bird, more like a flock of birds :)
Ilan Rabinovitch
We have a CloudFoundry talk at DevOpsDay today. Strong attendance.
Ilan Rabinovitch
This yaer is our first year doing bofs on a Thursday, so attendance in the evening was lighter.
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
A flock of seagulls, for you '80s music fans :-) The BoFs are usually well attended depending on the topic or software.
Ilan Rabinovitch
I imagine folks also wanted a night out around LA as the rest of the nights this week are pretty jam packed with activities.
Ilan Rabinovitch
Tonight is #BadVoltage Live and UpSCALE. Should be a blast.
Ilan Rabinovitch
and tomorrow is our world famous game night and an @Mc_Frontalot live show in Plaza Ballroom starting at 9pm.
HPE Cloud
@irabinovitch Very impressive; the 579th Greatest Rapper. Must see event
haley carriere
@irabinovitch I'm interested to learn more about how Cloud Foundry and containers are being used together?
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
I have some favorites, as far as the weekend talks go, and I'd be curious to hear from others on what they intend to see and hear. Alison Chaiken is going to talk about systemd tomorrow, for one. Charlie Kravetz on Linux and Accessibility is another.
Mark Atwood
systemd is a volatile and thus poplar topic
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
Reminder, too, that most of the sessions will be streamed on our YouTube channel.
HPE Cloud
Be sure to also look at the Sunday talks; plenty of good content then
haley carriere
I'll be attending the Linux install fest. I'm very excited to learn
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
The Linux class was very popular, haley, and it's full so you're lucky :-) Orv Beach and the staff are great teachers.
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
@hphelioncloud Sunday talks: The funny thing is that some of the best talks wrap up the show Sunday afternoon. Deb Nicholson and Matthew Miller, for starters.
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
@hphelioncloud Yes, thanks for that (the visual here was me scrambling to find the link). Thanks for that!
haley carriere
I'm glad I got in. I've been doing the Linux training classes using Ubuntu. So this training session will definitely provide some awesome on hands learning!
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
Super! It should be fun. And Linux is now very easy to use.
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
A quick plug, too, to our volunteers who have been working nonstop on-site since Wedneday - thanks, guys and gals!
HPE Cloud
Can you explain a bit more about this and how #SCALE13x is managed/run
haley carriere
shout out to the guys and gals in orange shirts! Ask them the wifi password and they'll mess with you :)
HPE Cloud
@haleysufi Yes, that spelling was way too confusing for the password
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
Generally we start six months out and teams - AV, Publicity, Networking, etc. -- start the process, we choose speakers in January, and it all comes together in February
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
That's the Reader's Digest version - there's more to it than that.
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
But SCALE is the largest community run Linux/FOSS expo in North America, second in size overall to OSCON.
HPE Cloud
And everyone is a volunteer. Truly an amazing effort to run an event this size like you do
Ilan Rabinovitch
Yes, all volunteers. We're already working on our #SCALE14X plan.
Ilan Rabinovitch
We have sister events that follow the same model and are part of the linuxfests.org family. @texaslinuxfest and @seagl
HPE Cloud
@irabinovitch Interesting, Texas LinuxFest is great but the Seattle event is new to me, will check it out
HPE Cloud
Any background info on the number of talks submitted and the challenges in putting together a conference?
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
Including all the talks and sessions, including things like Birds of a Feather, there are about 130 speakers chosen out of about 300. I wish we could have chosen more -- many of the submissions are outstanding
HPE Cloud
@lcafiero_scale One thing I do like is the wide variety of content and topics in open source that is part of the event
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
Honestly, it's one of the more difficult part of the SCALE process. We don't always agree on who should speak but it all works out in the end.
HPE Cloud
@lcafiero_scale Is there a committee involved that people can volunteer for to help for next year?
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
Yes. Yes yes yes. We can always use volunteers - they can drop a line to info@socallinuxexpo.org and we can set you up. Make sure you mention what you want to do.
Mark Atwood
Choosing the speakers at a conference is always difficult, there are so many good speakers with valuable things to present
Dez Blanchfield
Basic building blocks / Blueprints are the key to getting folk started with OpenSource, small steps, be it Firefox on a desktop or Vagrant and Docker on a cloud VM..
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
True. LibreOffice is another one, which is available for Mac/Windows.
HPE Cloud
Basic Linux training is also a great start. Plenty of people to help and online offerings
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
@hphelioncloud True. There are also more programs that are FOSS which are also cross platform, too. But that's an excellent point Dez.
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
I should say that we are grateful to HP for all they do for Linux/FOSS, and for all the food (and the beer) HP is providing this afternoon.
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
(which is where everyone is, I guess, at the moment :-) )
HPE Cloud
Happy to support Linux/FOSS and the #Scale13x event!!!!
HPE Cloud
We appreciate the #Scale13x team letting us try this Crowd Chat today. Looking to keep growing this event.
HPE Cloud
The beer lines have been constant all day and the food was a big hit. #HungryDevs
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
Yep, #hungrydevs, to say the least. :-)
Lisa-Marie Namphy
Calling all open source developers, and community members. Come add your name to the HP wall of fame! Sign it before space runs out!!! See you there (after this little chat we're having here! ;) http://www.via-cc.at...

Larry Cafiero/SCALE
I signed it. Also, that's Jeremy Sands in the photo from Southeast Linux Fest in Charlotte - for those of you on the East Coast. That's in June, I think.
HPE Cloud
@lcafiero_scale We spoke with Jeremy and are getting ready for HP to make its way East this summer
Larry Cafiero/SCALE
Excellent. I signed the wall, BTW.
Lisa-Marie Namphy
Sorry - couldn't figure out how to rotate the pic. Or maybe the old fashions have rotated the brain! ;) #geekingOutFromTheBar
