EC2 and S3 as building blocks have enables lots of other service to be viable. I think serverless is a great innovation and very #devops oriented

Name it. It's amazing how their model enables them to adjust quickly to market opportunity. That said, they aren't necessarily inventing everything. But they are providing competitive products in just about every major IT infrastructure category.

I see serverless as way to modularize (for the lack of a better word) the functions that we are looking to achieve, using just in time computing to optimize our spend and resources. It is also a tool that will be the glue that will connect anything you need to do in the cloud

I think that Sagemaker will be one of the fastest growing offerings . Every year Jassy promotes the fastest growing service and I predicted last year it would be sagemaker this year

@jamesurquhart You read my mind - it feels like AWS will push the envelope wherever it can be pushed. They're built as an organization to be able to do that. Outlier there is Google w/TensorFlow, etc. though.

The amount of AI is very small at the moment - it will be difficult to determine whether the AI functionality is lasting leadership.

Tools like #serverless are just a tool. The value isn't in using or not using. It is in how it improves your overall architecture from a value perspective.

In general, serverless feels a bit like the next logical step for people that don't want to care about infrastructure. Cloud lets you care less about infra and server less reduces that "need to care" even more.

is it easier to say where #AWS isn't the leader? As @CraigMilroy says, room for growth in #AI. #edge is also early in maturity and no clear leader yet. AWS is always impressive on how fast they move - 800 pound Gorilla that moves like Cheetah says @dvellante

@maishsk I would only add my opinion that it will simplify real-time data processing immensely, that that will be the next major IT revolution/focus (in 3-7 years).

AWS is clearly the leader still in Serverless with Lambda. But it's a tale of 2 cities right now. Lots of companies doing really cool things using serverless. Many enterprises, though, still focusing on doing lift and shift of VMs to the Cloud.

@kenhuiny there are so many companies that are still trying to understand how to use this cloud thing - and even more - how they adapt their security and organizational policies to this new world - that they do not have time / resources to innovate

AWS is far and away providing leadership in serverless, edge, and AI.

@CraigMilroy Yes. AWS is a leader in data science toolchain solutions for cloud-based deployment of AI/ML apps. SageMaker is a pacesetter in this super-hot space.

Today they are the market leader and have been the leader for a good number of years. But they are now starting to share their dominance with Microsoft - especially in the Enterprise market - so they will have to continue to innovate at an exponential pace to keep ahead.

Seems like their innovation engine will continue to crank out new services. Adoption of said services will become an increasing challenge as the # of "primitives" they offer becomes huge (even larger than today).

Like many vendors, #AWS needs to take a leadership role in helping customers understand the core value and path to adoption. Reality and pragmatic versus hype and theoretical. #cloud

Given their pioneering role in the first decade plus of cloud, I expect them to do more of the same. However, they will see more competition, which I thinks means more focus on business models and innovating in user experience.

- They caused people to think differently about where the value is. They shifted power from IT to the business in many ways. Who cares what the server / resources cost? It's about what you can do with those resources.

Their work with VMware seems to be steps towards multi-cloud or at least on-prem & public cloud. They'll have to continue that path if want to capture the huge albeit declining on-prem TAM.

@jamesurquhart I wouldn't be surprised to see AWS move into SaaS to blunt Oracle, Salesforce, and other SaaS providers' momentum in the public cloud.

@maishsk the big 3 cloud providers are all playing different games. Microsoft has great strength in applications. AWS is still dominant in IaaS. Google's strength in data/AI.

- They helped people admit that they need to let go of "non-differentiated value" functions. AWS will empower smart CIO's to get closer to the value the business is trying to offer the market. Talk to me about Fornite and Netflix not speeds and feeds.

@maishsk I wouldn't call it "sharing" dominance. Microsoft's momentum in public cloud adoption for Azure is tremendous. They're challenging AWS on many fronts, but AWS seems to be up to the challenge now.

Generally, I agree, but its tricky. They have a tremendous business supporting many of the biggest success stories in SaaS. However, there are areas (especially WRT IT) that I believe they see opportunity.

AWS is also leading the market in #serverless - as discussed in the above video, Serverless is being into the whole product line (not only Lambda alone)

@maishsk do you see them competing much today? Starting to see some collisions, but more it is replacing legacy (still after 10 years of growth)

As I see it, AWS remains the trend setter with Azure and GCP continuing to play from behind.

It is interesting to see Azure and GCP try to use some version of on-premises version of their cloud technology to try and out-flank AWS.

I think that AWS has been and will be the leading cloud computing platform powering SaaS at leading levels. SaaS revenue on top of AWS isn't measured in any market share metrics

@stu Yes - Microsoft is competing fiercely in the Enterprise market - and selling themselves as the new champion of all things open - in order to gain additional market share.

@maishsk I love the "new champion of all things open". Very smart play although 100% opposite of their historical plays.

Very cool...have spent some time in your office actually and worked with @bkelly019 back when he was at VMware as well.

There are three aspects that will govern growth of public #cloud: Culture, Data, Application use-cases that tie to business outcomes.

A big driver will be innovation. Very few companies have the resources, for example, to build out their own Machine Learning platform and will be drawn to using those services in the cloud.

Consumption ($), capacity planning, security

Security and cost will be the top two. If the cloud is no less secure (and sometimes more) than the on-prem and the cost model - is something organizations can continue to get behind - it will continue to grow. If either of the items change then growth will change

I think the key drivers of public cloud will be the many technologies it has enabled to flourish. Right now, that includes AI, agile development, etc, but the future (IMHO) will be really pushed by real time data and event processing demands.

The principal drivers of growth in public clouds over the next 5 years will be the need for scale, efficiency, and agility in enterprise applications, processes, and data-driven decision making.

@kenhuiny This is very true. This innovation, in turn, will be enabled by new technology options delivered by cloud.

@jamesurquhart Yes. Serverless, streaming, and real-time event processing are the heart of where public cloud is going into all apps.

One more thing will the ability to create and glue things together - this is the undiscovered jewel that Lambda will provide.

And unfortunately, what some CTOs and CIOs read they should be doing to be relevant. ;-)

for the first 10 years, #AWS drove the flywheel of customers and features. The new flywheel is #data

- security, policy enforcement, data management. Capacity isn't an issue. Neither is innovation.

Lots of answers obviously....but let's focus on staffing and skillset. Can speak personally that finding people with cloud skillset is hard / can take a long time.

What do folks see as the factors that hinder the growth of cloud? I see inertia, paralysis by analysis, and lack of advanced cloud skills.

@kenhuiny I agreed, Most organizations will outsource most functions to SaaS providers in the public cloud.

@maishsk I'm wondering if AWS and other other public cloud providers will provide development tooling that incorporates graphs to orchestrate interactions among serverless endpoints.

@stu Actually it is not the data - but rather what you can do with the data

I should hope they will be - it will provide a good complimentary set of tools for the right job

Feels like the low hanging fruit for AWS is already on AWS. Next steps are either companies adapting to cloud-native applications or companies getting put out of business by new companies building cloud-native as a competitive advantage.
