#AnaplanHub chat: How the Anaplan platform empowers CIOs to be strategic business executives
David Mario Smith
A4 - Priorities in regards to new and emerging technologies are done around expanding the traditional borders of the enterprise and automating to focus on higher value work.
Bill Maggs
Connected planning shouldn't just lead to more data but surface the insights that really drive change across all those boundaries.
David Mario Smith
Exactly it should surface those insights
Ned Demong
@AnaplanBillm agreed, insights that drive change in processes, behaviors, and decision making is what drives innovation and differentiation in the market
Hyoun Park
And innovation starts with the customer experience, meaning the company's customer. For tech to be the "force multiplier" that it is supposed to be, it has to improve the business' key strategic goals. Right now, too much CIO spend is for commoditized or outdated tech.
Anaplan
How are CIOs prioritizing their investments in enterprise SaaS applications, Mobility, Cloud Infrastructure, IOT, Machine Learning, AI, Big Data? #AnaplanHub
Hyoun Park
Half of SaaS spend is not going through IT and a lot of the experimental IoT, AI, and cloud spend are being hidden in projects rather than going through formal IT spend. All the more reason for CIOs to need a more connected planning model for IT.
Jason Ambrose
Depends on their objectives. Streamlining = cloud/RPA. Insights = AI/Big Data/IOT. End user experience = mobility, "single pane of glass".
Ned Demong
All of the above! More seriously, we are seeing a massive increase in demand for information about machine learning and AI; IOT and Big Data are in full swing, Cloud, Mobiliity, SaaS are (or should be) well traveled and accomplished goals in the enterprise by this point
David Mario Smith
A3 The biggest challenges are cost and security. Cost to move data to the cloud and then securing that data.
Hyoun Park
Data security, lineage, & governance are increasingly hard to track when it is so easy to create and move data!
Anaplan
What primary challenges do you see in adopting cloud across your organization? #AnaplanHub
Jason Ambrose
I think they would overwhelmingly say data security, but how much safer is it on prem?
David Mario Smith
good point! a lot of it has to do with data access
Nicolas B
A big challenge CIOs face is managing security and governance of enterprise data when their LOBs are adopting the myriad solutions that help solve their business problems.
Hyoun Park
Also, cloud economics can be deceiving across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS: it's easy to start, but deploying cloud at an organizational level can be expensive if you lose track of your cost structure
Rupert Tagnipes
I would also say understanding and reacting to the fact that the perimeter isn’t limited to just your data center.
Rupert Tagnipes
@nbrisoux And creating a unified set of policies and processes for mixed deployment models.
Hyoun Park
@Rup3r7_7 Mixed deployment policies are a big cloud bugaboo right now: it's really tough to be consistent when every vendor seems to want to define resources, instances, licenses, and usage differently. Without third-party reconciliation & definitions, this is really tough

What does connected planning mean to CIOs? #AnaplanHub
Jason Ambrose
Some of the most valuable information is in business plans, but it is hiding in spreadsheets. CP is a new area of governing critical info.
David Mario Smith
A3 - I think it has to mean moving toward a connected and conversational enterprise. There are conversationas around planning that require it be connected. It’s about agile decision making
Jason Ambrose
@DaveMario Yes collaboration is a key part of Connected Planning. I like the notion of a conversational enterprise.
Rupert Tagnipes
@DaveMario Yes, being able to react more quickly to changes in the market through greater insights of the entire enterprise.
Hyoun Park
A3 CIOs need to bring asset management, service management, financial management, and related business KPIs together to manage IT. Connected Planning provides that holistic visibility that is currently missing
Ned Demong
Connected planning can mean career growth and goal achievement for the CIO, imagine the impact of having built and scaled a platform that allows business leaders to think differently, measure performance differently, and ask different questions of the business
Jason Ambrose
@NedDemong It's definitely a category for CIOs to bring a lot of value to their peers as a steward of the business
Chris Badger
Connected Planning for the CIO and IT can be the conduit or gateway to be in synch with the LOBs and functions. Most CIOs want to get involved in enterprise apps relevant across the enterprise.
Reesha Dedhia
@jsa_sf Can you explain what connected planning means?
Jason Ambrose
@ReeshaDedhia It's about connecting financial, corporate and operational planning so they become dynamic, responding to changes in the world. Planning becomes more collaborative and adaptable. Less time on interlock, more on creating a future.
David Mario Smith
A2 - The CIO now plays a pivotal role as they are tasked with leading change and innovation.
Anaplan
What role(s) does the CIO play in leading digital transformation? #AnaplanHub
Jason Ambrose
They have arguably the best cross-functional view of business anchored in understanding data. They can advise colleagues on their interdependencies.
Hyoun Park
The CIO can be the boss of effective data, app, and computing resources & services. But the CIO needs to embrace the challenge of being the technical enabler for all corporate goods and service delivery. #AnaplanHub
Nicolas B
CIOs are in the best position to drive the move towards a data driven organization. Their challenge is how to corral the many applications and sources of data that come from shadow IT, and at the same time drive cultural change required.
Hyoun Park
Agree with @nbrisoux and corralling shadow IT starts with knowing the solutions that Shadow IT provides in an organization rather than simply blocking IT
