What's on the Horizon?
What’s on the Horizon for Desktop and App Virtualization?
VMwareCares
How does everyone find the VMware Knowledge Base content for Horizon?
John Furrier
I'm pinning this to the top for commentary
Andrew Morgan
pretty darn good (IMO)
John Furrier
is there a link
Captain Hook
I'm generally able to find what I want with a quick search, just need to differentiate between versions (5.1, 5.3, 6.0) in my search to get the right articles - I like the HTML versions over PDF.
Andrew Hancock
I think the KB for all VMware Products is exceptional, it's just a shame, that VMware Support are a dead loss!
Barry Coombs
VMware KB is great
VMwareCares
kb.vmware.com for the KB. Here's 50 Horizon KBs to get you started: http://blogs.vmware....
Phillip Jones
If the KB exists, its generally pretty good...
Simon Bramfitt
every time to click on a link
Grant Friend
KB's good but I find the community better, or a good compliment.
VMwareCares
Are we missing anything?
Dane Young, MBA
Good morning all!
Andrew Morgan
good evening :)
John Furrier
hey there great to have you join
Barry Coombs
Are we at the point now where a VDI project can be a CAPEX saving over a PC refresh whilst still delivering user improvements, or is that still a dream? What has allowed you to achieve this or what is stopping you?
Simon Long
If the VDI project is done correctly it can happen
Barry Coombs
@SimonLong_ what are the critical success factor to ensure capex saving / neutrality in your mind?
Ben Goodman
We are... I saw a customer present yesterday that they are a doing a deployment now where virtual desktops are cheaper then their physical desktops
Shawn Bass
The CapEx can be beat. Many vendors offering this. The OpEx is the real story here though. More on this later.
Phillip Jones
Feel this is a dream... don't think its always impossible though. Need to look at other ways VDI can help the business
Barry Coombs
@benontech How are they achieving this, what was the critical element for them to achieve this?
Rodrigo Gazzaneo
it CAN be a CAPEX saving. But I still don't see it as primary goal.
Barry Coombs
@shawnbass OpEx is a great story but can be more difficult to sell to a business, but critical in the very reason why you are wanting to completed the EUC project
Kevin Cooke
CAPEX (and OPEX) are wonderful, but we need to also remember there is an opportunity to change the paradigm. Did we talk about CX and OX when we replaced typewriters with PCs?
Rodrigo Gazzaneo
@La_Vida_Quatro Agreed. When M.Ds can walk around while keeping context, it is all about impact.
Simon Long
Sizing is usually the critical factor. Most people oversize to reduce risk which in turn increases Capex. Size correctly and maybe don't look at your 'preferred' vendor for the cheapest option .
Andrew Hancock
and what we need to know, is can we "play games" e.g. Steam on Horizon 6.0 ? this is what our Developers are doing, Games Development, so currently are tied to nVidia Hardware, using OpenGL, DirectX, and OpenCL
Joe Baguley
Short answer is yes - I know some who do with shared NVIDIA GRID amongst others. With regards to your exact requirements I am not sure.
Andrew Hancock
@JoeBaguley looks like we will have to evaluate and obtain a nVidia Grid to test and compare.
Andrew Hancock
yes, every year we refesh the developers machines, with new hardware...
Joe Baguley
Sounds like VDI is the answer then... ;-)
Andrew Hancock
not if it does not work, or meet the performance criterion!
Shawn Bass
Let's discuss offline via email. Complex topic.
Andrew Hancock
We are desperate to get off a standard PC platform, that we have to replace every year....
Andrew Hancock
anyway, we've got 400-500 Developers, Visual Studio, is Horizon 6.0 ready for 3D Graphics Work, and DirectX?
Joe Baguley
Also check out the work with Nvidia - http://www.nvidia.co...
John Furrier
what about API based developer goodness like json, node, angular etc
Andrew Hancock
@JoeBaguley yes, I know it does 3D, but can some tell me if all the hardware calls, are available using nVidia hardware in servers..
Andrew Hancock
@furrier only interested in Gaming Developement for this client...
Joe Baguley
Ah ha, that I cannot answer for you straight away, will need to investigate, maybe @shawnbass can help.
Andrew Hancock
@JoeBaguley but, it talks about 3D for Desktop Users, but what about Steam Game Players, because it's the performance that's required for Developers, that Develop games on a PC platform. e.g. Frame Per Second ? How many FPS can we push, at 1024 x 768, or h
Shawn Bass
Full compat with DX, OpenGL as native Nvidia driver is used with vGPU. CUDA not supported on vGPU, but can be done with passthrough vDGA.
Shawn Bass
This is a long topic of discussion, feel free to email me to discuss in more than 140 chars.
Andrew Hancock
@shawnbass I will, we've been around this look now since 4.0! So I'll email and discuss....because BYOD is now causing us issues
Andrew Hancock
@shawnbass and I feel it's time for a change...and spend money elsewhere...
Andrew Hancock
I thought this said 5.00 GMT! not 5.00 BST!
Barry Coombs
How do you judge the success of an EUC project?
Andrew Morgan
Happy users. Under budget and on time :)
Barry Coombs
How about a happy and productive business? ;)
Phillip Jones
Did it meet the requirements? End User satisfaction, and what @andyjmorgan said
Rodrigo Gazzaneo
users dig it. That tells a successful EUC project
Joe Baguley
Users telling other users how much better things are now and encouraging them to use the systems themselves. That is the best sign.
John Furrier
I would say that "consumer like" metrics like usage will be a factor - if it's good it will be used; other factors - productivity as it is scoped (revenue, etc..)
Andrew Morgan
@JoeBaguley absolutely, when converted users evangelise, the project will be successful.
Simon Long
All of your 'success criteria' that was agreed upon before the project is started is met.
