#datacenterFuture of Data CenterTrends and Converged Infrastructure
Dave Vellante
Larry rightly points out that Oracle wasn't first w/ converged systems - it was Teradata...
Dave Vellante
Ellison says Cicso has been "very successful" with a strategy to sell low cost servers to the data center core - UCS growing at 30%+ along w/ Oracle Engineered systems growing very rapidly
Dave Vellante
Strategy according to Ellison was to deliver the highest performance...but purchase price was an impediment
Dave Vellante
Larry says new strategy: "We're going to compete for the 2-socket data center core business"
Dave Vellante
Strategy is to deliver both highest performance AND lowest price - "by far" - Larry says Cisco and EMC invented this idea but he says Oracle can do better

Dave Vellante
@dfloyer - can Oracle be the low cost provider in your opinion?

John Furrier
Oracle is price subsidizing the low end to push competition to their turf on competitive war
Dave Vellante
My angle...why wouldn't Oracle sell hardware at the lowest purchase? It gets to mop up on database, middleware and apps #duh
Dave Vellante
Larry Ellison LOVES Infiniband
Stuart Miniman
I'm sorry, Larry just said "Ethernet is old" - InfiniBand is great for connecting nodes, but it's never taking over the market position of Ethernet. This battle is lost, move on.
Brett Murphy
#Exadata is not converged. It is a integrated solution. Quite a bit of difference.
Brett Murphy
A truly converged system was #IBM #PureFlex but also #Power8 servers with #PowerVM combine converged compute, memory, SAN & Ethernet in the same server.
Oracle
Crowds are flowing in, getting ready for Larry Ellison's announcement. http://www.via-cc.at...

John Furrier
Datacenter trends: Datacenter core: 2 socket servers from Intel; lowest cost price vs Engineered Systems: multiple cores high performance; integration is the key to advantage
Brett Murphy
Interesting as this seems to be an acknowledgement of #Intel inefficiency in 4 socket and larger servers.
John Furrier
@PowerMan_SIS Bret notice how Larry uses the word "cheapest" vs "least expensive" - it's a shot at older players in general purpose market

Exadata is getting faster and faster. Now it is more reliable and has a better cost performance.
Brett Murphy
I don't see how the hardware is getting more reliable if the cost is coming down. I suspect the hardware is as lean as possible with little innovation leaving it all to software to manage.
Dave Vellante
Larry can pack them in - "fire marshall full" http://www.via-cc.at...

Crowd Captain
Nice view from @theCUBE inside the Oracle belly!!!
Dave Vellante
@CrowdCaptain CTO Ellison takes the stage - love that he has title and it's not BS

Dave Vellante
Oracle is getting ready to show off it's growing portfolio of so-called engineered systems. Fruits of R&D labor - lots of competitive smack expected.
Dave Vellante
Larry Ellison reminds me of Larry Bird...Talks smack but can back it up with results

Several years ago IBM CEO Sam Palmisano said doesn't worry about HP, he worries about Orcl b/c they spend on R&D
Dave Vellante

John Furrier
This is about SUN now firmly established as Oracle Hardware the way Larry wanted it imho
John Furrier
this reminds me about my conversation with Andy Jassy #AWS integrated decision from day one the key to building awesome platform
Phil Dunn
Yeah, did you see latest Oracle Q2FY15 financials? R&D is roughly 14% of revenue with a 9% increase from last year. That’s more than 2x of IBM on per revenue basis, 5x more than HP
Brett Murphy
I heard at the last Oracle financials they were spending 12% of revenue on R&D, not 14% as Phil Dunn states. If IBM is twice as big as Oracle that negates the 2X statement does it not?

FS1 has the performance of flash w/ giant low-cost capacity containers -Mike Workman, #Oracle Storage: https://www.oracle.c...
Oracle FS1 Flash Storage System | Oracle
Oracle FS1 Flash Storage System delivers higher performance, greater predictability, and better economics through Flash and Disk tiering.
Brett Murphy
But the FS1 is a hybrid storage solution using high performance disk. Just heard #Larry state that technology is on the way out in favor of AFA or All Flash Arrays

#Virtualization can’t be an afterthought—it has to be engineered in. http://www.oracle.co...
