@furrier he said hybrid as well back in 2012. HP had the right strategy well before anyone now finally getting to investing the team to go grab it

@furrier Q: If Helion becomes a community of providers all based on Open Source software, where does HP make money?
John Furrier
HP is ramping up social media and HP Cloud has its own CMO @bpatrick001 Bobby Patrick #theCUBE reporting
Bert Latamore
Everybody has been saying hybrid for the last year or two. Budt AWS continues to be the huge growth story in cloud, and it is NOT hybrid.

With OpenStack evolving so quickly how does HP control versioning at client sites? You can't drown customer IT with incremental updates. That is why AWS doesn't provide an on-prem cloud.

HP Helion is all about open source. Everything that's practical goes open source - Mark Interrante, SVP, Engineering, HP Cloud #HPDiscover
Dave Vellante
Interesting model from an engineering resource standpoint...open source velocity is predictable in the aggregate but not nec. at the component level
Bert Latamore
Interrante has interesting, frank things to say about working with Open Source, the good and the bad. The good definitely outweighs the bad, but code stability can be a problem.
alina_popescu
Iterrante says HP Cloud will continue to invest more in 2015, actively hiring.
John Furrier
#Opensource has a cadence to it that takes time to get to know that is what HP brings to the table investing heavily in #openstack #theCUBE
Tim Crawford
There's a balance to be struck WRT #cloud and #OSS. Not black and white.
John Furrier
@tcrawford agree i think those two are interrelated
Tim Crawford
@furrier they are very much inter-related. It's important to understand where the intersections are.

#theCUBE #HPHelionCloud #OpenSource #OpenStack
theCUBE
@interrante "But while the specific feature predictability is less, the aggregate development is much faster. You're working with a group that could never be assembled in one company"
#theCUBE #HPHelionCloud #OpenSource #OpenStack
theCUBE
@interrante "We are investing in design, UI, UX. I believe in high quality internet UI design"
#theCUBE #HPHelionCloud #OpenSource #OpenStack

@interrante: "We delivered the full release, we are onboarding customers." that is the big news here.
theCUBE
@interrante "At public cloud scale, you're bringing racks online every day."
#theCUBE #HPHelionCloud #OpenSource #OpenStack
Bert Latamore
Obviously moving to the public provider level is the next goal. And Hp is doing it all internal so far -- IBM for instance bought Softlayer to get there. So it is an exciting time for Helion.
Tim Crawford
I disagree that moving to public #cloud is the goal. It's not that simple.
theCUBE
@interrante - We're synch'ing up with more groups inside HP
#theCUBE #HPHelionCloud #OpenSource #OpenStack
Jeff Frick
@tcrawford > think @interrante said getting to Public Cloud attributes / scale is the goal. Like having systems/process/capabilities to add capacity in
racks per day vs
servers per month.
#theCUBE
Tim Crawford
@JeffFrick That only works at a service provider/ #cloud vertical approach. Not corp enterprises.
Bert Latamore
Will be interesting to see what the market reception is by next June. Helion has a lot of competitors out there. I wonder if the new relationship with Microsoft will extend to cloud.
Tim Crawford
Depends on the perspective. Helion in a vacuum, yes. As part of a portfolio/ ecosystem, no.
Jeff Frick
@tcrawford https://twitter.com/...
tcrawford
@JeffFrick That is exactly it! It shifts to Service Providers from Corp Enterprises.

Quoted By @JeffFrick
Jeff Frick
@tcrawford > So does the net new $$ in the service providers, more than make up for the Enterprises buying less? Seems so as TAM explodes with IoT, etc.
Tim Crawford
@JeffFrick That's a loaded question. Yes/ No.
Jeff Frick
@tcrawford > @ Location & Context world yesterday, amazing growth & rebirth in what was simply RFID, & bar code tracking. Combined w/ low power BlueTooth, mobile phones & in "Inside GPS" another vector of exploding demand for cloud computing capacity
Jeff Frick
@tcrawford > Loaded, I don't think so. We've barely begun to see the explosion in cloud computing demand. Perhaps not great story for next few Qtrs, but demand will only increase, increase, increase. IoT will be huge. Just for Sports & Entertainment
Bert Latamore
A big part of the Helion message is hybrid. We have heard that constantly this week. But for hybrid HP needs services out there that use Helion. That means Helion needs to be service provider ready. So I think it is a goal right now.

Bert Latamore
I'll believe that The Machine might become real when he can show actual functioning memristors. Until then it is a paper exercise.
Tim Crawford
Even if tech is ready, I question if people will truly be ready. I suspect no.
