Cloud Computing in 2015
Predictions for Cloud Computing in 2015
Jean Paul Sigwalt
Do #Cloud hosting vendors make money? any insights on AWS cloud financials, as they are not published?
Dez Blanchfield
- yes of course they do, those who do not fall by the way side, at the end of the day it's "business", the myths and lies and spin doesn't pay the bills, it's that simple.
Dez Blanchfield
- the Amazon model is easy to understand, they lead by 200% more than the 2nd largest player ( Microsoft ) and they [ Amazon ] intend to pour every last dollar back into growth ( see Era Of Smart - I posted links above !! )
Dez Blanchfield
- best estimates, Amazon = 2M servers, Microsoft = 1M servers, RackSpace = 110,000 servers, HP = 50,000 servers.. I don't have numbers for SoftLayer ATM as they are moving too fast thanks to the IBM acquisition ;-)
Miroslav Hofbauer
I doubt anyone has insight into figures. However, virtual servers get clearly commoditized, that's why e.g. Rackspace is moving back to managed services. Added value is a key I think
Jean Paul Sigwalt
@dez_blanchfield, well, an European analyst firm was claiming recently they were not. Since financials are not disclosed, and being potentially subsidized from the other 95% of the business
Miroslav Hofbauer
I also looked at SoftLayer #servers. They said they had 100.000 servers in 2011: http://www.datacente...
SoftLayer Hits 100,000 Servers | Data Center Knowledge
IT infrastructure service provider SoftLayer Technologies now has more than 100,000 servers running in its data centers, the company said last week. The Dallas-based provider has added 14,000 servers this year. Read More
Jean Paul Sigwalt
So what happens when a major cloud service provider goes bust? will public money be needed to save them, as it happens recently for the financial sector?
Dez Blanchfield
- @miroslav - I saw that but I'm struggling to map it to real numbers, so if I take it on face value, that would still put IBM SoftLayer as closely following RAX who reportedly have 110,000 servers ATM.
Dez Blanchfield
- you can't say that Amazon's AWS business "isn't making money" just because it's throwing 99% of it's revenue back into growth, that's a completely different commercial conversation.. capital growth is not loss
Miroslav Hofbauer
I'm almost sure they're not loosing money. There are too many small local players and enough space and also apetitie I believe for consolidation in this space.
Dez Blanchfield
Cloud in 2015 is going to be like Cloud in 2014 but more of it.. lots and lots more of it..
Stefan Ried
I've got some stuff prepared, but let's wait some minutes
Filip Hanker
could you be more specific, please? No big differences?

most of this topics are about external communication and support functions
Stefan Ried
@C2lhoste Like the transportation analogy.Never use a private plane for my business travel:) Some workloads simply belong in public cloud
Dez Blanchfield
- well in that good analogy, you probably can't afford a private plane all the time, in fact even a single flight on a private plane isn't realistic or sensible, ditto with technology and business systems / tools et al

will the increased commoditization of encryption in cloud usage change this picture?
Stefan Ried
@bosoevsoe Oh yes, as people get more trust they will use more public clouds.
Stefan Ried
Vendors need to make it #NSA proof :)

What are your personal prediction for 2015 in the first two categories?

@vicdelr TCO and topology has an relation. Let's talk about hybrid as well
Stefan Ried
A private cloud is a cloud where resources are restricted to be used by a single organization.
Stefan Ried
We talk about a hybrid cloud, if one resource type, application or business process is spread over multiple privacy levels.
Stefan Ried
So if you use for example on-premise and public cloud for compute power and shift things dynamically, its a hybrid strategy
Stefan Ried
In general TCO in the cloud is lower for infrastructure
Stefan Ried
For applications, it depends, SaaS can be up to the same price, but you have less own work to do.
Jean Paul Sigwalt
apart from SMEs, is the Cloud strategy for Enterprise clients by definition an Hybrid one?
Stefan Ried
Yes, at least in Europe I would say so.
Stefan Ried
In the US we have some single sourcing companies just getting everything from one provider
Victor del Rosal
I suppose IaaS is becoming too commoditised and unattractive from the point of a Cloud Service Provider
Stefan Ried
but single sourcing is not a idea in Europe, you have multiple privacy levels
Nic Swart
Hmm, certain types of Enterprises, like BNP and Bayer would never go to hybrid... to much privacy concerns...
Victor del Rosal
overall in the SME space, is there a "sweet spot" of number of users where cloud does make sense for an SME (SaaS/PaaS + managed services)?
Bo Soevsoe Nielsen
@vicdelr it is more about the actual business case than size of org; small SMEs get the advantage of large entreprise computing, the large enterprises get the nimble flexibility that used to be limited to smaller SMEs.
Victor del Rosal
I like this! "[with cloud] SMEs get the advantage of large entreprise computing, the large enterprises get the nimble flexibility that used to be limited to smaller SMEs"
Dez Blanchfield
- cloud is indeed, as it's already proven, an equalizer on ALL levels of business & technology ;-)
Stefan Ried
right, it was about cost first, then about agility, now about collaboration
Mihai Criveti
standards based open instance, image and application migration will play a huge role in cloud adoption
Dez Blanchfield
- history albeit very short, as in less than a decade, has clearly shown that "open" has beaten "closed", 2 million or more servers running Linux and Xen = 5% of the Internet ( aka Amazon Web Services) !!!
Dez Blanchfield
- Rackspace = Linux / OpenStack / Xen ( open source ) !!
Dez Blanchfield
- SoftLayer = open source !!
Paul Are A Killie
IT is all about usage. You use what is available measured on price and technology
Doug Clark
I agree this is a composable #cloud model in the future, open stds will help that momentum with less vendor lock-in
