• 36 Intel Virtualized Servers / Location
• 1 NAS Storage System / Location
• All Open Source management software
• Total monthly cost ~$35K vs AWS cost of AWS @ $.50 / hour for 160 instances = $57,600.00 / month.

< What was the driving issue for your hybrid adventure? Cost? Speed with which you might change?
Victoria Louise ✨
How do you select the best hybrid cloud provider for your firm?
Michael J Dorosh
Call Me! Seriously, you need to consider your applications and middleware. You need to match you app needs to the right environs. You need to consider SLA's and expirience beyond the IaaS.
Rich Miller
Depends on what your highest priority is. If it's data jurisdiction and where data is domiciled, then you find the vendor that has proof of compliance.
Micro Strategies Inc
Consider the provider's experience in the space, other implementations, and look closely at demand to select the best hybrid cloud provider for your firm
Rich Miller
If it's scale-out / scale-back, it may be responsiveness or cost.
Amy Hermes
Makes me think of Alice in Wonderland "Please tell me which way I ought to go from here.."Depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat. "I don't much care where... " said Alice. "Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.
Shubham Anand
vendors which support open standards like OpenStack, Docker would be a good choice.
Farhan Ahmed MS(CS), ITILV3F, Prince2
Operational Enhancements:
 Strict standardization of hardware and infrastructure software components
 Small numbers of system administrators due to the standard design of cloud
components and support processes
 Failure of any single co

To summarize Hybrid Cloud environment:
• Installed In July & August 2011
• Hybrid Cloud integrations with AWS & SoftLayer
• Citrix CloudStack/CloudPlatform with XenServer Hypervisors
• Two Locations in Equinix, East & West Coasts
to be continued.....
DanLucky
I have implemented a Hybrid Cloud over the past 3 years.
What would you like to know?
Michael J Dorosh
So where are the pain points and what works?
Rich Miller
< What worked? What was the most painful?
John Furrier
Did you acheive your objective, expensive?, people like doing it? is it positioned to build value? love to hear your experiences
Adam Wray
@furrier need to drop the #GoRoyals btw...;)
Mike Onsing
@adamjwray @furrier I got carried away last night watching the game can't wait for the games 3-5 so depressing my boys got spanked
Amy Hermes
Did we REALLY just make the leap from hybrid cloud to baseball?
John Furrier
@adamjwray the @sfgiants handle did the something similar so I copied them and threw the Cube in there for kicks @mikeonsing Giants will win. KC will have hard time that is unless pitching steps up like gm 2
John Furrier
@adamjwray ck out this innovation that came from cloud (now it's AWS but relevant) https://www.facebook...
John Furrier - Observation on impact of Cloud and Amazon... | Facebook
Observation on impact of Cloud and Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud technology like #AWS is changing the game born in the cloud works..see this cool...
John Furrier
@amyhermes baseball is apple pie and cloud
Adam Wray
@furrier I like our chances w/ our closing 3, all over 100mphs - kind of like #cloud
John Furrier
@adamjwray after game one I was like KC will fold then after that amazing pitching last night they might just run the table. Great rebound for them props to your team
Michael J Dorosh
@duncanjw Baseball is cricket that lasts less that a day.
Adam Wray
@furrier game3 will be fun to watch; anyones game
Jerry Overton
What's it going to take to be a major player in the hybrid cloud space?
Michael J Dorosh
Strong private cloud experience, combined with public clouds, bare metal cloud, and a deep commitment to Openstack and open tech.
Jeffrey Borek
Surprisingly enough, people. Staffing to engage the traditional enterprise and work with them on true hybrid solutions. It's why AWS is building a 50K employee center in London.
Dan Hushon
providing an integrated developer experience & set of operational controls/monitors
Micro Strategies Inc
3 years of implementation experience and maintaining a hybrid cloud environment, it will take dedicated learning and the flexibility to meet customer demand
Shubham Anand
security and easy portability option between cloud vendors -- which i think hints back to open standards-based cloud.
Michael J Dorosh
@jeffborek Yup people and skills, application and intergration skills.
Kelly Meade
agree with application and integration skills, also security and open technologies
John Furrier
high level you either own or have your own stack (aka cloud) or you dance around it or ontop of it. Big players have to have their own cloud to innovate with software; just my opinion but think that I'm right on this
Duncan Johnston-Watt
Fundamental grasp of the importance of the network that underpins this and making this a standard part of your offering - Google and IBM get this globally as does Interoute in Europe
IBM Cloud
What are the most important considerations businesses should make as they move to hybrid?
Adam Wray
what they're doing w/ their data, ie #datagravity
Michael J Dorosh
Governance, and knowing their apps.
Mike Onsing
To me it's about easy to do. It can't be hard and complicated. Also I'm hiring developers who don't know anything about datacenter infrastructure
Rich Miller
< Can you elaborate on the question? Economic considerations? Functional? Privacy?
Jeffrey Borek
Like the LInux revolution, the initial perception of value was wrt cost - but I believe increasingly the attention will turn to openness, flexibility and control.
Duncan Johnston-Watt
The most important driver is what services does a business need? They'll pretty quickly find that a whole bunch of these are outwith their environment
Duncan Johnston-Watt
@adamjwray good point about #datagravity whether this applies to location of data today or its creation tomorrow - right?
Adam Wray
@duncanjw both long haul, have to be able to manage & orchestrate
Jeffrey Borek
Hybrid is not a new concept, it was well defined by NIST back in 2011. It's just that client have tired of the Public vs. Private debate, and are now looking to combine the best elements of both!
Rich Miller
< No one is claiming that it's new. And, I would agree that the vested interests were arguing Private v. Public, when in fact it was pretty obvious we need the hybrid solutions.
Michael J Dorosh
Definitely not new, but much more relevant as Big IT embraces cloud.
Duncan Johnston-Watt
hybrid is just a special case of any-2-any or multi-cloud
Gokhan AYKAN
What about cross border limitations? Russia, Brasil, Turkey etc all impose restrictions on data to be kept within the country..
Adam Wray
governance will be critical; just ask @cloudsoft at #ricon
John Furrier
great point Ireland is not enough which is why AWS announced the Germany datacenter; multitenant and data protection is back on the table. Not sure it left the table
Michael J Dorosh
Governance is very critical - but Hybrid allows for smart placement of the right parts.
Rich Miller
The issue(s) of data sovereignty are extremely important drivers for hybrid cloud, particularly in industries that operate under serious compliance requirements.
Duncan Johnston-Watt
@adamjwray its an essential component of chain of custody
Michael J Dorosh
@furrier Softlayer opened in Melbourne, London, Toronto, and Paris in the last 6 months, with a lot more to come.
Jeffrey Borek
and if the industry doesn't get it's act together on this you can expect to see Gov't step in to regulate.
Marin Debelic
physical location of data is less important than who is allowed to access it.
