VMAX3

VMAX to the Power of 3
Ask Brian Gallagher, Fidelma Russo, & Barry Burke anything about the new VMAX platform
John Furrier
Two Questions: 1) What are EMCs Thoughts on FusionIO selling to Sandisk? Obviously public valuation are not in lie with private valuations. 2) What challenges do private companies have competing with the big dogs like EMC?
Barry Burke
With thin margins, and 90%+ of revenue from 6 customers, is makes sense for SANdisk. Popping skins on servers isn't for everybody though- #FlashEverywhere baby!
CrowdFather
These private companies can't hire talent when their valuations are in the billions. Their window to execute is tiny. They will all crash an burn or be absorbed by the street
Barry Ader
expected that market to commoditize
Brian Gallagher
2.) Technology aside, the biggest challenges competing against EMC is our Global Services. Best in class and a HUGE competitive differentiator!
Barry Burke
And the breadth of our portfolio
CrowdFather
@BGallagher32 If i were Tucci and this team I wouldn't give a poop about Pure Storage they are ankle biters but I'd be afriad of AWS. AWS could put EMC our of bus; Pure never could. #streettalk
Erik Comperen
What if we could look into the future of workload-behaviour during storage-tiering to better predict performance and capacity needs? FAST Hinting is the answer. A fantastic new feature that makes the VMAX3 even more efficient!
Yogesh Agrawal
Not just FAST hinting. VMAX3 has a workload planning service (built-in) that can understand the workload pattern and forecast how much headroom is left based on both capacity and performance.
Erik Comperen
Sounds really good!
Rob Reynolds
Is there any change in how much Cache the VMAX3 uses for things like MetaData. ?
Fidelma Russo
vmax3 redesigned metadata to cloud scale. As with any system cache mileage will vary.
Fidelma Russo
biggest cache sizes in the industry delivers read hit performance across most workloads
John Furrier
What does Power of 3 mean? When will all this new stuff be available? Just want to get the dates and availability on the record here
Barry Ader
all 3 platforms available this quarter. File and ProtectPoint in q4
Barry Ader
100K, 200K and 400K to be more specific
Jonathan Siegal
3rd generation, up to 3x faster
John Furrier
@BarryAder thx Barry for clarifying that Q3 except for File and ProtectPoint in Q4
Guy Churchward
Brian, I've heard some AFA vendors compare themselves to the new VMAX platform... Apples-Apples or Apples-Oranges ?
Luis Bonilla
@furrier All Flash Array :-)
Brian Gallagher
Guy, Apples-Oranges. VMAX is enterprise architecture, RAS, resiliency and best in class with the ability to hyperconsolidate mixed workload environment with multiple data services running. It's not just speeds & feeds.
John Furrier
@BGallagher32 said below Apples to Oranges - i'd like more data on that
Yogesh Agrawal
Most storage players (including AFA) focused on speeds/feeds. VMAX3 changes the game with a focus on apps/workloads.
John Furrier
@BGallagher32 I agree but the competition throws that FUD on speeds and feeds. As @stevie_chambers points out in other thread; mixed workload of hybrid require certain tech/flexibility cross mgt etc..
Yogesh Agrawal
VMAX3 has built-in analytics to understand mixed workloads and their resource needs in the system. Sounds too good to be true :)
Guy Churchward
Yogesh - But thats not saying they don't have a place but they are simply not equal ?
Yogesh Agrawal
AFA definitely has a place. Chad Sakac did a nice job at EMC World explaining various storage architectures and their place.
Barry Burke
FUD from dual-controller AFAs that degrade performance under heavy load is hardly a threat. VMAX and XtremIO both offer better availability with consistent, predictable performance.
Brian Gallagher
@EMCCorp is leading in Flash and our strategy is Flash Everywhere - from server to network to storage. XIO, DSSD, VMAX, VNX, Isilon - leaders in Flash and more to come...
Rob Reynolds
Any Enhancements to Raid Protection? ( Drive Rebuild Times )
Barry Burke
Lots of progress in rebuild times, focus on supporting ever larger devices (both Flash and Spinning Rust)
Steve Chambers
As a Microsoft cloud guy I see, feel and hear enormous demand for hybrid cloud storage, like FAST but with an Azure backend... is it possible to get VMAX3 to consume Azure on the back end?
Fidelma Russo
Twinstrata baby!
John Furrier
@FidelmaRusso can you eleborate on your enthusiasm? so yes it works
Steve Chambers
@FidelmaRusso absolutely, but it's just a bunch of acquisitions and feature pointss
Steve Chambers
Does it work today? If not today, what will work when?
Barry Ader
not yet, but can soon
Steve Chambers
@furrier absolutely, John, as you know hybrid cloud means cross-management, ID, storage, network, app mobility and everything else on the long list. I wonder how VMAX3 fits into my GTM and customer needs
Steve Chambers
For the record, I would love to partner with my awesome EMC brethren on connecting clouds
Barry Ader
steve, contact me and I can help get that going.
Steve Chambers
I find STORSIMPLE an amazing product for customers
Steve Chambers
@vGazza hey buddy, iSCSI is awesome for a lot of people! :) FC is also a PITA for everyone else. Just because we always did it that way, doesn't make it right. Change is among us! :)
Rodrigo Gazzaneo
I am a big fan of iSCSI. But when consolidation matters most, big FC pipes make a difference.
Rodrigo Gazzaneo
it should be all about scale. The industry as a whole should get there.
John Furrier
EMC Mgt Team: Why do you call VMAX3 a data service platform?
Yogesh Agrawal
That's because HyperMax OS in VMAX3 enables traditional and new data/application services to be run embedded !
Yogesh Agrawal
Efficient, low footprint !
Brian Gallagher
block services, file services, copy services, b/u services, workload management services, cloud services, mobility services, more to come....
Barry Ader
Runs data services embedded in addition to standard storage access
Luis Bonilla
I'm reading about SnapVX. Can anybody elaborate?
Fidelma Russo
completely new snap architecture . single instance, greater scale , no limits
Barry Burke
SnapVX is pointer based, uses the same pools as the primary device, supports up to 256 snaps per volume, zero overhead until mounted
Luis Bonilla
Is that licensed separately or part of the base OS?
Jonathan Siegal
and radically simpler
Barry Burke
No more Copy On Write, baby! 256 Snaps today, up to 1024 soon.Just what the #SnapAddicts asked for!!
