Brocade Special CrowdChat
1 hour conversation discussing, from a networking perspective, the storage products redefined
John Furrier
Question: What do you think is behind the quick adoption of XtremIO all-flash array? #redefinepossible
Scott Shimomura
Clearly channels and RTM are key for sales. Having EMC behind the product is huge (mission critical apps). Great tech as well.
John Furrier
EMC is gunning for @purestorage @scott_dietzen welcomes the competition; never saw flash replacing spinning disk for a while; but great new product in the new converged architcture
MattWineberg
Superior performance, EMC branding & reputation and engaged channel partners
John Furrier
@MattWineberg Also think emc sales and loyal customers are tough nut to crack for #EMC competition #redefinepossible
Scott Shimomura
Competition and innovation are a welcome sight in storage. We are the company to partner with and have no ambitions to compete with storage.
John Furrier
@craigCPratt says @scott_dietzen how much is replacing existing EMC storage? #swapprogram https://twitter.com/...

Question for Brocade and @C_Heckart @Jburton said in his keynote today in London "Architecture Matters" for scale out and availability; Comment on how Brocade views architecture matters?
Crowd Captain
what is the innovation strategy for Brocade?
Scott Shimomura
Brocade provides network connectivity for 1st (FICON), 2nd (FC and Ethernet Fabrics), and 3rd (SDN/NFV) platforms. HW or SW.
Dan Hushon
love to hear the answer here... how does network & position of core network assets contribute to NFR's/architecture in scale-out patterns.
Brook Reams
@DanHushon So, can you disambiguate which of the many NFR you mean? http://acronyms.thef...
John Furrier
@DanHushon great to see you with us today; the network side of the equation will be very interesting esp with NFV action heating up nicely
Scott Shimomura
@DanHushon we are positioned to evolve with customers vs. rip/replace. Fabrics help with the transition to software defined.
John Furrier
@scottshimo @DanHushon also refresh cycles are upon us and this is an important conversation for migration to cloud
Brook Reams
Architecture is what you anticipate when U build a system. How did you abstract complexity? How does that affect how U connect to what surrounds you? How well can your system adapt to change? At what cost?
John Furrier
@BRCDbreams great response; this is the oppty no one deployment looks like the other; flexibility is key to success; what do you tell customers about #flexibility design optimization
Scott Shimomura
@BRCDbreams Agreed, the cloud is not an end-point, it's part of the journey. Still have to live in the present while preparing for the future.
John Furrier
What is this idea of Gen 5 Fibre Channel and why the tie in to EMC #redefinepossible - how is brocade redefining what's possible
http://www.brocade.c...
The Network Matters for Storage
Brocade DCX 8510 and Gen 5 Fibre Channel unleash high density server virtualization. http://bit.ly/BRCDFV #BrocadeFabricVision
Scott Shimomura
Flash is a common theme across EMC's launch today. #Gen5 Fibre Channel was purpose build for solid state storage
John Furrier
#flashstorage will drive lots of biz for sure; followup for @scottshimo - how many partners do you have for Gen 5
Scott Shimomura
Applications and storage require low latency, highly reliable network connections. Today most commonly deployed network for #AFA is FC.
Scott Shimomura
In addition to EMC, we are working with all of our traditional OEMs. AAlso working with most of the emerging AFA for both Fibre Channel and Ethernet storage. #EthernetFabric #Gen5FC
MattWineberg
Brocade Gen5FC platforms are optimized for all-flash array storage systems #redefinepossible #BrocadeRedefined
John Furrier
@MattWineberg I was always a big fan of all flash array in the archecture; never a doubt; had this convo with @scott_dietzen when he founded @purestorage
Scott Shimomura
Remember though all flash still is a drop in the bucket for data center capacity. That's why it's important to have a complete storage portfolio to compete sometimes.
Crowd Captain
@scottshimo I see the same flash will be important but the datacenter will have disk and tape for some time
John Furrier
Q: what does Brocade think about #redefinepossible? Did EMC bring the Steak to the Sizzle party?
John Furrier
@Chris_Mellor calls EMC Tech overlord - http://www.theregist... where is the brocade piece

EMC rocked it today with new VMAX3 and XtremeIO systems.
Juan Tarrío
@scottshimo Does anyone still think Fibre Channel is dead? :P
Scott Shimomura

@jtarrio there is no way fibre channel is dead but more important in these new engineered systems
MattWineberg
EMC storage + Brocade Gen5FC = network performance #redefinepossible #BrocadeRedefined
Christine Heckart
@chris_mellor besides Hadoop clusters and Flash arrays, I'm curious what other "leading edge" applications you see SAN being deployed right now?
John Furrier
@C_Heckart Christine great to see you on the chat. Awesome just like @jburton; I love this new media interaction
Christine Heckart
thanks John, would love to know your perspective on this question about leading edge apps....it's something i'm thinking about a lot.....SAP's HANA seems to be another hot spot....what do you see?
John Furrier
@C_Heckart I would bet @Chris_mellor didn't write that headline; hey chris can you clarify?
John Furrier
@C_Heckart SAP is hot right now both EMC and HP are doing the alignment with SAP; EMC had Bill McDermott with Joe Tucci on stage so that was huge; plus SAP and EMC have been virtualizing HANA (and SAP) for some time
Christine Heckart
@chris_mellor I don't really mind the headline, it gets attention which is the point, and chris is usually smack-on in his POV, the underlying question is what's the future going to look like and what technologies best support it?
Christine Heckart
@chris_mellor it seems like SAN is attaching to some pretty hot technologies and applications, but i can't tell if this is a trend or just representative of a few companies?
Sylvie Otten (Sollod
@C_Heckart SAP is betting big on HANA, and customers are looking to rationalize that purchase. EMC has been helping customers do just that. EMC IT just celebrated it's 2 year anniversary since Propel went live.
Sylvie Otten (Sollod
@C_Heckart please find more on how EMC IT is implementing SAP HANA http://www.emc.com/c...
Dan Hushon
@jtarrio big fast pipes have their place, but surrounding them are thousands of small drinking straws with different color lipstick... fabrics rule, but strategies !coherent
Scott Shimomura
Clearly there are some workloads suited for in-memory PCIe flash. These still need networks for access and scale-out. These are best suited for our Ethernet Fabric tech.
Sylvie Otten (Sollod
@DanHushon Well said Dan. Ultimately it's about providing choice to solve customer's challenges in a cost effective way.

@furrier Does CrowdChat see "me" as the same account when I login via account other than Twitter? Or is it more like having three separate accounts?
John Furrier
You need two different browsers
John Furrier
@tlustig CrowdChat grabs your icon from the social network you log in from
Jim @ CWPBIZ
Well... yes. That's what I've discovered so far...and is how I'm participating here... but would be great if my action could draw from multiple socnets simultaneously. #wewantitall :)
John Furrier
@cwebpresence we see people want to log in from the network they are in the mode to share in
Jim Canto
Ah... and I see I'll have to change my avatar to one with my logo placed lower left so as not to be obscured by the LinkedIn logo.
Jim Canto
I can see how that is a natural "want." I'm excited that LinkedIn is operating smoothly to and from #CrowdChat. I've developed quite a network on LI. This will help me engage with them while simultaneously introducing them to a valuable new platform.
