He looks like Duke Ellington. Which is a compliment.
John Furrier
Jim Gantier best dressed man in the server industry
John Casaretto
SL4500 - HP's first server designed for Big Data - small 4U footprint #density - this is cool
John Casaretto
Jim Ganthier - a lot of scope in this conversation at HP Discover
John Casaretto
Can Ganthier take down this claim that Cisco is #1 in servers?
John Furrier
Jim Ganthier says @Cisco UCS IDC claims are bogus; it's revenue only and avg selling price; not the right data cc @matteastwood
John Casaretto
Ganthier: Cisco isn't #1 in servers on a global level - they're talking about a revenue-only claim
John Casaretto
Vellante - Are they #1 in Harvard, Massachusetts? < Select statistics
John Casaretto
Ganthier - Comparing server market share is not apples to apples, (but we're #1)
Stuart Miniman
@furrier Cisco claims #1 in blade server revenue in Americas only. Definitely not in units or global and still single digit in total server market

Stephen Spector, HP Social Media Strategist & the Cloud Don, live now on #TheCUBE.

My Flipcam died a year ago. I still have it and miss it.
John Furrier
Cloud Don and Stephen Spector are awesome

Alistair Winner says the public cloud approach of replacing rather than repairing failed hardware will slowly move into the enterprise market and impact it.
Bert Latamore
But that hyperscale approach to managing hardware is based on cheap hyperscale infrastructure & 100% virtualization, with data centers managed on a single pane of glass. That is not common (to say the least) in enterprises today.
Bert Latamore
HP appears to have a very strong story in software-defined networking, both in product & internal experience moving their own huge corporate network to SDN. Is it enough for HP to take market share from Cisco?
John Furrier
#SDDC is a huge opportunity and providing the services to that fast evolving market is a big deal imho
Bert Latamore
Totally agree. And if HP can capitalize it will do a lot for the company. And it could move HP up as a converged systems provider. Those two areas -- network and converged systems -- can feed off each others' growth.
Bert Latamore
Alistair Winner just said his #1 focus in hyperscale. Does HP plan to compete in the big service provider hardware market -- Amazon, Google, etc. -- against the white box makers?
Bert Latamore
Or is it expecting hyperscale to start moving into HP's traditional enterprise market short term?

very nice data science from CrowdChat Platform and congrats on the launch and great press reviews

The Hashtag Is The Social Network: CrowdChat Launches Group Conversations For Business
VideoHashtags, those #wordsorphrases you see at the end of a Twitter message to signal what the tweet is about, have since spread to other social networks such as Facebook, to popular culture including the slang vocabulary of my middle-school daughte...
Dave Vellante
@furrier says you can't blame George Kadifa - he actually did some great work at HP Software (I agree btw) - But didn't Meg blame him and force the change?
John Furrier
Kadifa saves software group and kept it together and put it on a path to create a stronger product / market fit
John Furrier
HP could have blown the entire software play if they didn't play the autonomy integration properly; Kadifa played it well
Dave Vellante
Autonomy was a mess when Kadifa took over - Autonomy now is in a position to do some damage - Idol on-demand, HAVEN, etc.
Dave Vellante
The key is developers imo - HP is weak in the developer mindshare at this point. Needs improvement
Bert Latamore
How strong is HP's development package vis a vie BlueMix, AWS developer tool set? Will it compete?
John Furrier
HP has to put their best people on really winning the new generation of developers; if they do they can win the entire game

HP finally at the point in cloud where they can go to market wit a hybrid cloud offering says Dave Vellante on #TheCUBE.
Bert Latamore
The people I talk to such as OnApp say OpenStack is more a toolkit than a full platform. So if Heleon is pure open source & OpenStack as HP keeps saying, is this a full cloud solution? And where is HP's differentiation?
Bert Latamore
David Vellante and John Furrier wrap up the second day at Discover now live on #TheCUBE.
Bert Latamore
Meg Whitman really is passionate about those political issues. And she is right. No doubt she came alive.
Bert Latamore
Great to hear that the CrowdChat launch went so well. I certainly hope this takes off.
Bert Latamore
@furrier True, some of these companies like Docker are being created to be sold. But in flash storage at least IBM and HP have their technologies. EMC might need something better but who else would be buying?
Bert Latamore
Antonio Neri, Senior Vice President and General Manager, HP Servers live now on #TheCube.
Dave Vellante
Antonio told me off camera that the future of cloud is compute - he was kidding (sort of) but clearly storage is moving closer to the processor and the network and server are converging...there's truth to what he says
Bert Latamore
Yes, I think he is pretty much right.
John Furrier
with servers it's about compute not about boxes
Bert Latamore
And when you go to a software-defined architecture then less of the critical functdionality is on the hardware.
John Furrier
@dvellante the new apollo servers are about density and high performance and super computing
CrowdFather
@dvellante @furrier ask about Cisco touting their market share from IDC? are blades dead
John Casaretto
I wonder if Neri sees IBM selling off their server division as a big opportunity. HP has brand value that will play well
Bert Latamore
I think the system-on-a-chip concept is exciting.
John Furrier
to be a player in the new style of IT you have to be a player in the infrastructure can't outsource it - talking about IBM divesting their x86 business
Bert Latamore
When IBM sold its PC business to Lenovo HP talked about how it was #1 and they would pick up share in the market. Who is #1 now?
Bert Latamore
IBM will still be an infrastructure player. Do not underestimate Power 8
Dave Vellante
Neri used to run technology services and was part of a services and EG alignment under Dave Donatelli - who btw is officially out of HP as of two mos ago
Bert Latamore
Is HP growing its network market vs Cisco? The technology sounds terrific.
Bert Latamore
Donatelli leaving is a real shock. Was that voluntary do you think?
John Furrier
HP's strategy is based upon openstack
Bert Latamore
What's going on there? Is there a fire or are they just trying to wake people up?
John Casaretto
Neri states HP is moving away from server era to compute era.
Bert Latamore
Overall I am seeing a lot more strong corporate vision Than I did in December. And HP has some good technology and a good vision going forward. Its big handicap is that it has to do all innovation internally -- it does not yet have money for acquisitions.
