#NetAppChat#NetAppChatMaking Sense of the Hybrid IT Mix: Flash, Cloud, Software-Defined
Ryan Beaty
SDS is taking the complexity of managing storage and moving toward a more automated provisioning method.
John Furrier
do you see storage being commoditized and if so what sw will be the enabler
Ryan Beaty I think if you look at the nuts and bolts most of it is. It is the software solutions the vendors are coming up with that will make them stand out.
John Furrier
What is SDS and how does that relate to the mega cloud trend?
Adam J. Bergh
To me SDS really means that I am tied to only one vendors hardware. #NetApp facilitates with ONTAP Edge, V-series, and Clustered ONTAP.
Val Bercovici - 2020 Hindsight
#SDS has matured to more than a buzzword now. There are some real value scenarios focused on agile app (1) development & (2) deployment
Adam J. Bergh
#SDS means that the software defines the value, and not necessarily the underlying hardware.
Stuart Miniman
large cloud providers have storage solutions that are software-based, typically on servers rather than arrays - this methodology is coming to the enterprise
Data Definer If hyperscalers hw comes to entprse, what does that mean for storage vendors?
Data Definer
A1: SDS is defined in software; provisioned based on policy/service level; and deployed on any hardware.
Bhumik Patel Agree and a critical aspect of SDS is to be able to identify infrastructure requirements from applications & deliver them in policy based manner
Bhumik Patel
For customers, #SDS is one critical component of defining their overall #cloud strategy - be it public, private or hybrid...
Val Bercovici - 2020 Hindsight
for development SDS offers rich data protection & data management services exposed directly to code, helping generate more data-rich apps more quickly
Nick Howell
I think users are still figuring that out for themselves, and it's going to be subjective to each end user. It's up to the industry to define what we're capable of doing for them.
Val Bercovici - 2020 Hindsight
@furrier for deployment SDS offers very agile infrastructure options tailored to specific app needs and always right-sized for the workload at hand
Ryan Beaty
Storage is becoming a commodity. It is the software that extends the functionality of products. #SDS
Val Bercovici - 2020 Hindsight correct! But remember, storing data is table-stakes. Serving it at the right service levels, (Geo) replicating it and analyzing is where it gets interesting! :)
Bhumik Patel
So practically, customers should be looking to leverage #SDS to accelerate their journey to the cloud...by means of abstraction of storage, #policy-based automation and delivering faster storage services

My approach to SDS is Virtualized Storage Services; Multi-Vendor Hardware; & Application Self-Service. Agree?
Val Bercovici - 2020 Hindsight agree. But also programmatic access to storage deployment as well as rich storage services (dedupe, thin cloning, thin replication, VM image shift, etc...) all on demand! :)
Sean Luce
One of the benefits of a #SDS is creating repeatable processes for provisioning and protecting your data regardless of the underlying hardware/infrastructure.

Hi John - great to be here!'
David A. Chapa
First time at the #netappchat - glad to be here. Just finished presenting with @publiccloudguy on @EVault DP Service for #NetApp Good stuff!
