Open Technology Summit
A sneak peek into the Open Technology Summit at Innovate 2014 and the power of open technologies.
Sean Kennedy
The panel at this year's Open Tech Summit will focus on "product and software delivery" Panelists will bring perspectives from Software Supply Chain, Systems Engineering, & Traditional IT. What open tech are you leveraging to speed your delivery?
John Furrier
I'm talking to #ibm customer BNY Mellon right now; quote "he wants opensource and he knows it's faster"
John Furrier
single stack environment is key to continuous build environment - openstack for cloud;
John Furrier
having #devops layer built in with automation from build to production is what developers and #devops mgrs want
Sean Kennedy
@furrier yes ... and also from production back to development!
John Furrier
totally nice closed loop..that word closed loop will be a big part of this #devops culture more now than ever before
Sean Kennedy
@furrier without the "closed loop" there's no way to go fast without sacrificing quality
Jennifer Dennis
@furrier theCUBE interviews at #IBMEdge are amplifying OTS at #IBMInnovate. Love it.
Rob Jago
Is there a working arrangement/understanding among the vendors/participants making up the Open Technology Summit to have a common vision/direction , aka. similar to The Agile Manifest concept? or is it too early for that?
Dave Ings
IMHO there are shared values about the power of open development but otherwise a diverse set of viewpoints will be presented at the OTS.
Sean Kennedy
in the #OSLC community we've played with the idea ... but it still seems a bit early for that. The more complex the effort gets the more standards & integration becomes ... #IoT #SystemsEngineering #DevOps
Kim Messeri
How important is understanding the user in open source projects?
John Furrier
I think the human component is important both on the contributor side and the end user of the project
Kim Messeri
Agreed, especially for a big project with lots of different overlapping use cases, understanding the user is even more important.
Sean Kennedy
Scenarios (use cases, user stories, whatever) are CRITICAL to successful open projects (both source and standards).
John Furrier
The genius of opensource the "humans" (people) determine the value in the actions of the community..very efficient marketplace of innovation
Kim Messeri
Documentation and understanding the user go hand-in-hand IMO. What's the report card on documentation in open source projects?

Are there or will there be discussions on organizational processes and best practices to support these Open Technologies? as with all new technologies, if an organization does not know how to properly organize around it, it may result in problems.
Sean Kennedy
yes, that is a key consideration when trying to figure the _real_ cost of open tech. A lot of times the tech can be disruptive to the org ...
John Furrier
@seanpk8 one thing I'm hearing is how open integrates in multivendor buildout and specifically from large scale infrastructure. The #devops apps side seems clear; but lg scale infra is booming
Sean Kennedy
@furrier "The #devops apps side seems clear; but lg scale infra is booming" I don't grok that ... but one thing I hear from end users everywhere is the demand for open integration to save them from lock-in and facilitate system composition
Rob Jago
Agreed, @seanpk8 @furrier; sticking with open integration standards, will help promote the technology faster; combined with #IoT and #BigData, will expedite the creativity .....
Rob Jago
Can/Will BlueMix be implemented as a private "cloud"?
Dave Ings
Honestly I don't know, but there will be BlueMix experts at the OTS!
Rob Jago
@ingsings I will indeed continue to learn about and ask the experts. thank you
John Furrier
the guy to ping is @theRab
CrowdFather
the jury is still out on #bluemix
Jennifer Dennis
the automobile was disruptive not just to the horse & buggy, but because it created suburbs, gas stations and shopping malls. What cultural shift will open source technology drive in the near future?
John Furrier
Opensource has changed now we are seeing new models with many "destinations" :-)
Dave Ings
I think the cultural shift it has already driven is the incredible acceleration of development and innovation.
Jennifer Dennis
How will open source Watson impact non-tech/developers lives?
Zach Jory
interested to see what #IBMWatson will do in the medical field
Kim Messeri
@KimMesseri - Just out today: IBM buys virtual assistant maker Cognea to give Watson personality from 'suit and tie to kid next door' via @ZDNet, @liamT http://zd.net/1palFR...
IBM buys virtual assistant maker Cognea to give Watson personality from 'suit and tie to kid next door' | ZDNet
Will Cognea help IBM commercialise Watson with greater success than it's found so far?
John Furrier
Kim I loved that news. @JenniferDennis I think that new user experiences create new opportunities and that will be win win for customers their customers and service delivery partners
Rob Jago
Will OpenSpace constructs be used to further discuss some of these open source technologies?
Sean Kennedy
brilliant idea! but maybe next time ... or at one of the BoFs - say the #OSLC Steering Cmte Birds Of a Feather session on Wed, Jun 4 @ 12:30
Jennifer Throop
I have heard this is the second year you have hosted the Open Summit. Who typically attends?
Sean Kennedy
Last year we had everyone from developers to executives. Open tech can affect the whole org ... so everyone needs to pay attention!
Jennifer Throop
Can you tell me which partners will be at the Open Technology Summit and what role they will play?
Sean Kennedy
We've got Array Networks and SODIUS as sponsors - we've also got presentations from jQuery and PointSource.
John Furrier
That's a great question. The partner ecosystem is very important bc #opensource is key to success and lock in is not the trend customers & partners want
John Furrier
The Red Hat article in the WSJ really brought up the issues of building in the open to foster innovation and progress http://online.wsj.co...
Red Hat plays hardball on OpenStack software
Red Hat has embraced OpenStack, a new kind of open-source software. But some Red Hat rivals, partners and customers fear that it is wielding its dominance in Linux to block organizations from using alternative cloud software.
Dave Ings
The Read Hat article would be an excellent question for the OpenStack leaders speaking at the OTS.
